Team Cherry has delayed Hollow Knight: Silksong out of the release window it handed the anticipated 2D title nearly a year ago. Having appeared in Microsoft's June press conference, it was one of the games slated to release within the next 12 months. This will no longer happen, though, as the developer confirms Hollow Knight: Silksong won't launch in the first six months of 2023.
Taking to Twitter, marketing and publishing exec Matthew Griffin said development is continuing through the projected release window. "We're excited by how the game is shaping up, and it's gotten quite big, so we want to take the time to make the game as good as we can. Expect more details from us once we get closer to release."
This delay doesn't entirely rule out a PS5, PS4 release at some point in 2023, but given today's pushback, it's likely you won't be playing the game until at least the very end of the year. A launch in early to mid-2024 sounds more realistic at this point. While details on the sequel are still somewhat light, Silksong introduces a new kingdom to explore, over 150 enemies, and a new difficulty setting that changes the experience after completing the game. Considering how lengthy the original Hollow Knight became with multiple DLC drops after launch, Silksong sounds like it's shaping up to be yet another big — but welcome — commitment.

Going by his wording ("how the game is shaping up", etc.) I'm going to assume Silksong won't be out until at least 2024. It definitely doesn't sound like a project in its final stages of development, at any rate.
Can't they use chat gpt to finalize the game quicky?
Hollow Knight was one of my favourite games from the last gen so I’d rather they take the time and get it right.
Definitely one of my most anticipated games. Hollow Knight surprised me immensely and fast became one of my all time favourites
Good to get out ahead of the not-E3 conferences before everybody is like “Silksong when”.
They should absolutely take as long as they need to get it right, but that doesn’t also mean waiting isn’t a chore. Hell they were on the Nintendo direct about 2-3 years ago, the cover story on EDGE almost a year and a half ago, Xbox showcase last year. If games gave blue balls…
But they are in a tough spot they HAD to announce it super-early as it was originally stretch goal DLC for the first game. Most games we wouldn't even know about for 2-5 years.
@themightyant Sounds like the project has just grown in scope since it was revealed, from a bite-sized expansion to a full game.
Redfall's mess, Starfield's delay, and now this. That Xbox showcase last summer really was cursed eh?
Well, I’m not surprised. I think I’ll be surprised when the game actually releases. If I remember correctly, this originally had a release date of 2019. I wonder just how much more has been added to this title or changed since it’s initial announcement.
@themightyant I have a feeling it’s more to do with the Redfall release/reaction and probably wanting a bit more time to polish it up.
It would be heartbreaking if it launched a buggy mess. Better to get it right.
Really enjoyed my time with Hollow Knight, but it seemed to never end and I ran out of steam before I could complete it. Maybe if the sequel was a bit less bloated or something, I would be a bit more interested. But seems like they are expanding on it. Oh well. 😕
@Perturbator It was meant to be DLC for Hollow Knight with Hornet as a playable character in that game. That was a stretch goal on the original Kickstarter.
But at some point they decided not to do that and instead make a sequel which seems to have grown and grown.
As I said usually we wouldn’t usually know about a game that early in development till years later and they would be developing it out of the limelight. But I because it was an unfulfilled Kickstarter reward they had to let everyone know what they were doing, why backers weren’t getting Hornet in Hollow Knight. It’s unfortunate that meant gamers knew about it long before they usually would and have been hounding them since.
I'm super excited for SilkSong, but man, the wait is killing me lol
No other game has made me curse, yell and scream as much as Hollow Knight.
Not even close.
@somnambulance They honestly should have waiting on announcing the game until it was close to being finished.
Instead everyone's starting to feel like it's vaporware lol.
I don't really need this to be a 50 hour game. I wish it was shorter but more stuffed with excellent content. Still excited to play it, though!
