The latest Japanese sales charts, compiled and published by gaming bible Famitsu, account for two weeks of data, which is worth pointing out right away. Golden Week was kind to the PS5, however, driving the system to sales just shy of 100k units, specifically 99,938. Sony’s system was, as usual, handily outsold by the Nintendo Switch, with The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom right around the corner, of course.
In terms of software, the PS4 version of Hogwarts Legacy picked up where its PS5 predecessor left off, adding another 31,918 units to the title’s total. It was joined by another new release, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, which sold 16,742 units on the PS5 alone. The rest of the software chart, perhaps unsurprisingly, was dominated by Nintendo’s evergreen releases.

I’ll forever be confused by how Mario Kart still sells. You’d think everybody in Japan owns it by now.
lol The OLED Switch sold nearly as many units this week as the lifetime sales in Japan of the Series X.
@Ralizah The Switch is an absolutely monster in Japan. Ridiculous!
I love how people always use these articles to be smug about the number of Xbox sales.
Grow up.
Wow, I imagine a lot of the OLED models were TOTK editions? No doubt this peak in sales is related to the Zelda release, and I’m wondering if this will continue on beyond an initial release trend. Also imagine the same will happen for PS5 just before Ff16. Interesting times!
I’ll be getting my copy of Zelda at midnight tonight 🙂

@__jamiie don’t think he was being smug, it’s just factual observation…?

@nessisonett 1 Mario Kart sold for ever 6 Switch's in Japan, that's crazily high given that some people must own multiple Switch's.
Tales of the PS5s demise in Japan were very exaggerated:
Worldwide, PS5 sales are currently sitting at ~32% of the PS4s lifetime sales.
In Japan PS5 sales are ~36% of the PS4s lifetime sales.
@__jamiie
Who am I to question market outcomes?
@get2sammyb The hardware's momentum this late into its life is pretty impressive. Especially when you consider the OLED model is consistently selling best, and it's a stone's throw from the MSRP of the digital PS5, at least in NA.
@__jamiie No smugness intended, was just amazed by the distinction.
The people saying that Xbox sales are weak in Japan. I have a feeling it's intentional by MS. They're probably not sending stock at all.
It's getting outsold by the PS4, which is almost 10 years old.
@Sil_Am I just don't think there's a market there. They increased the price recently, too.
PS5 is doing a lot better now, but even that can't come close to competing with the Switch. So it makes sense the market is even smaller for Xbox, as it's not been particularly strong historically either.

And yet 4K, 60FPS, 120hz, VRR and trophies are all none existence on the Switch and they still do great numbers worldwide. Mind boggling Nintendo magic with its great games. Who ever at Nintendo first came up with idea of the hybrid Switch in the middle of the WiiU failure days should be getting chunky pay rises and chunky bonuses every year
@Beerheadgamer82, Imaging if Nintendo actually made a console capable of running games like Resident Evil, Elden Ring, Cyberpunk, Tales of Arise, modern Final Fantasy, etc, added to the 1st party catalogue, it would surely kill all competition.
Sony & MS would go bust in the gaming business, probably Sony for good.
This is comming from a PS fanboy.

@Sil_Am yh I've often thought that too over the last few years. They'd have to sell the console at a heavier price though. They'd get me back on board with a better online and thier own trophies
Even the PS4 is still outselling Microsofts next gen consoles, doesn't matter what they do if you don't have exclusive JRPG content then it ain't going to sell.
@Beerheadgamer82, An Oled Switch is almost the same price as a digital PS5 anyway, so there isn't a problem there. The next Switch will probably pe 400$ anyway.
I wouldn't want them to compete in this space anyway, cause PS would die for sure.
They are basicaly keeping the competition alive by bringing underpowered hardware.

@__jamiie genuinely understand where you coming from but it's the Internet. The internet can be a great place but it's no good trying to take it seriously all of the time
@Sil_Am highly doubt Xbox or PS would die if Nintendo came out with a very similar console that's on par with PS and Xbox. I mean Nintendo are still going strong after poor Gamecube sales and even worse WiiU sales, they always bounce back with big numbers like Wii and current Switch. I think many Ninty fans adore Nintendo for being a little different, doing their own thing regardless of what the other two are doing. It's impossible to predict Nintendo but I always remain fascinated by them even if the 3DS was my last Ninty purchase
For some reason Nintendo Life never reported on this week's sales so I guess I'll have to say this here instead: congrats to Pokémon SV and Splatoon 3 on hitting 5 million and 4 million physical sold in Japan, respectively!
Since I'm on Push Square I'll also congratulate PS5 on its impressive numbers. Nothing historic but hopefully they can keep sales up as FF16 and FF7R-2 are nearing release. Also congrats to PS4 on outselling XBSX+S!
