Star Wars Jedi: Survivor was last week's best-selling physical game in the UK, with its release marking the region's second-biggest launch of the year behind Hogwarts Legacy. 82 per cent of purchases were for the PS5 version, but sales were down overall by 35 per cent when compared to 2019's Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. That's likely because digital downloads have become much more prevalent in the years since, which this chart doesn't include.
Elsewhere, Dead Island 2 made way for Cal Kestis' next adventure, but sales were only down by 45 per cent, which is fairly impressive for a game's second-week purchases. We've also got FIFA 23 returning to the top three, while Hogwarts Legacy and Resident Evil 4 sales are both down compared to last week.
UK Sales Charts: Week Ending 29th April 2023
- Star Wars Jedi: Survivor
- Dead Island 2
- FIFA 23
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- Hogwarts Legacy
- Super Mario Odyssey
- Minecraft (Switch)
- Minecraft Legends
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
- Resident Evil 4

Obviously only tells half the story, but just insane splits on physical sales in the UK right now.
Those Hogwarts numbers for next week are about to rocket up. Glad for anyone that’s a fan of Star Wars with Jedi Survivor. If trends from this year or last year are taken into account, it’s almost like people want excellent story-driven single player games or something.
Well I will always prefer physical, only download if I really have no choice.
@somnambulance Yeah, I’m curious how the Hogwarts sales numbers will change with the PS4 release. I don’t know how many players are still stuck solely playing last Gen, but I suspect it’s a lot. I’m also equally curious to see how the game functions on old hardware. I can’t fathom that it’ll be a Cyberpunk part 2 fiasco, but the performance has to be meager on a base PS4.
And not surprised at the Jedi Survivor dominance, but I am surprised it has had a significantly lower launch than Fallen Order. But there again, perhaps due to lower number of PS5 units out in the wild. It’s probably a higher attach rate per PS5 than Fallen Order was per PS4.
So, that leaves 18% for Xbox Series?! What a spread.
Why are people still preordering and buying broken games at launch? When a game is broken like star wars, people should not be buying it and sending a message to the publisher that it's OK to launch games in such a state. It's a tragic mess on all platforms after watching Digital Foundrys videos on ps5 and pc. Not good enough by a long shot
@Sakai thing is, you can't control what other people do, no matter how much sense it makes to you. It's the same with politics. People never learn. That's why things don't improve.
It baffles my mind how they still can't provide physical and digital sales combined in 2023.
@Sakai
I only played it two hours and I only had frame drops during cutscenes. So far.
Apparently the xbox have a higher split in digital due to most of xbox users is using Series S. Man, hope those version is good cause in general the game been suffering some crazy performance issues across all platforms and the Series S is bit weaker than the comparable gpu gtx 1660.
I am personally skipping the game and waiting for cheap discounts. I am right now playing MHR Sunbreak (personally its not that good) and waiting for FF16 to drop.
@Bamila There’s basically no way to independently track digital sales, you need to rely on the companies freely offering that data.
@Sakaixx That rarely turns out to be true, though. PlayStation usually has an incredibly strong digital split as well.
@TheCollector316 almost a monopoly!
Good for Survivor. It's a great game I've been having a blast with it so far! Sure it probably could have used a few more weeks in the oven but I've thankfully had a good experience for the most part. Respawn is definitely one of the best in the business.
@Green-Bandit
Unlikely. Sony doesn't have 80%+ of the console market in the UK (or anywhere). I believe the true culprit is Microsoft training their gamers to not buy games and wait until they are on Game Pass.
Those are not bad numbers for Xbox considering half the sold consoles are digital only Series S systems.
@TheCollector316 Sony has a 70/30 spilt on console sales, just need Xbox to screw up a little more and Sony will be the one with the monopoly people are so worried about. Maybe MS will go off and just do Cloud and PC and Sony will have the high end console market 100% to itself and Nintendo will have the Hybrid market to itself.
@Bamila they do that already but it always takes a week longer. Then they release the combined numbers. And they are usually pretty similiar than these ones.
@get2sammyb PlayStation has strong digital sales no doubt. But Xbox is the dominant digital console. I know its only 1 game, but this article is a good read as we rarely get the full picture.
Source: https://www.gamesindustry.biz/lego-star-wars-the-skywalker-saga-launch-was-nearly-as-big-as-elden-ring-uk-digital-charts
"In terms of digital, Xbox was the dominant platform accounting for 41% of sales, PlayStation accounted for 34%, PC 18% and Switch 7%.
Overall (so including physical retail), PlayStation was the biggest platform with 39% of sales, followed by Xbox (34%), then Switch (16%) and finally PC (11%)."
Highest digital sales on Xbox with a substantially smaller install base. Sales split fairly close after digital sales included. The physical charts are nearly useless these days when determining if a game is a sucess or not
@GodofCapcom Digital Foundry found below 720p resolution and huge performance problems in the Performance mode. Resolution mode has severe performance problems aswell with drops to and below 20fps. Ontop of that they found numerous graphical bugs and game breaking bugs.
The game should not have launched in that state and I really wish people would stop buying broken games, then maybe publishers would be less inclined to release broken products. In this digital day and age there really is no reason to preorder or buy at launch, its not as if they are going to run out of digital copies to sell.
@Sakai
I haven't experienced that yet.
I bought it after the reviews btw.
Well deserved for Jedi Survivor. Played it all weekend and tons of fun. Audio is also fantastic, 100% use headphones for this one
I'm on PC for Jedi. I played Fallen Order on PC, keep my collection intact. We had a Patch today (console gets one tomorrow)... but on my PC it settled down after 10hrs mark.
PS5 was busy with Burning Shores anyway.
@Sakai
The vaste majority of gamers don’t frequent sites that will give them that information. Nor, in fairness, will the majority even notice performance or graphical issues when playing.
We are in the minority for big name games like this.
@GodofCapcom I hope you enjoy the game and the issues are not so noticeable for you. I don't wish anyone to have a bad experience after spending their hard earned money.
The fact it reviewed so well, despite numerous game breaking bugs and terrible technical shortcomings is a topic for another day. Its another issue I am exasperated with, its like nobody learned anything from Cyberpunk
@thefourfoldroot1 good points, its sometimes easy to forget we are in our little "hardcore gamer" bubble here. Maybe if the reviews were not so glowing for a broken game, then the wider public might have some more information to make a more informed decision.
But who am I kidding, its Star Wars, the general public would buy it regardless, that's one of the reasons why they released it completely broken I guess. And I say that a someone who loves Star Wars
@Sakai
I know it sucks. I've been playing it slowly because of that, especially because of the game breaking bugs.
For a second there, I thought EA was changing with dead space and wild hearts.
God f dammit.
Welp. Capcom best publisher of the year.
I've just caved and bought Hogwarts for PS5. I'm quite enjoying it so far, turned all of the HUD off so I'm getting lost an awful lot but it's great for exploring.
I got this on Series S, I generally get third party games on Xbox because the online codes are significantly cheaper and more accessible than PSN. I saved about £20 at launch.
Good on Dead Island 2 for doing so well, that is one I picked up on the PS5.
I can imagine Hogwarts Legacy will be back at no1 next week with a 70%+ share for PS4 which still have a huge install base.
Man xbox really need to try harder, kind of suck if ps5 didn't have any competitor.
I'm 9 hours in on the PS5 version. Only major problem is the game doesn't work in HDR. As far as the framerate drops are concerned- they aren't a huge issue on a VRR display. Still not exactly what you want on day one, but not quite as bad as people are making it out to be.
Good lord Mario Kart 8. You would thing everyone has owned that game by now!!!
That's a lot of disappointed ps5 owners 😕
@FenIsMightier do you have a VRR display? If so, have you noticed a lot of frame rate issues? I can only speak from my personal experience. I can see the frame rate fluctuating when I look at it on my TV but it isn’t really noticeable as far as what I’m seeing when I play the game.
@Th3solution @somnambulance I think SOME of the PS5's massive sales boost in Q4 2023 were down to next-gen exclusives like Hogwart's Legacy (timed exclusivity) and Dead Space.
But I'm still expecting Hogwarts to get a massive bump next week with PS4 and XBO and again in July with Switch. While we are hopefully petering out cross generation games I wonder whether this would be a better model going forwards, and next gen, staggering the releases of next-gen and delaying last-gen versions.
@themightyant I wouldn’t be opposed to staggered releases like that, although I’d rather prefer just moving on at this point.
Playing Hogwarts, it performs well on PS5 and mostly has decent polish for such a large open world game. But I can tell there are occasional loading areas and mechanics that were placed there specifically to make the last gen port easier to implement. For example in some cases transporting from one area to another has a quick transition scene where it probably doesn’t need one on PS5 but most certainly will on PS4. And things like the amount of simultaneous effects on the screen will most likely have to be toned down. I’ll be curious to see how the game is different. Part of the joy of the game is in the attention to detail (animated moving portraits and statues in the halls, NPCs mulling around having conversations, high graphical fidelity and artistic detail, etc) and how chaotically quick and snappy the combat can be, as well as the joy of riding a broom all over the countryside exploring. Some of this will likely be sacrificed to some degree on PS4 and Switch.
@MayaMousavi Nintendo is a hard example point cause while i agree with you for some reason the government and industry count them as a non high end hybrid system. When they look at number of what they call the high end console market (PS&MS) Sony has a 70/30 spilt and if MS keeps messing up sony could take even more, my comment was meant to be a little sarcastic cause i see so many PS fans wish MS would leave the Console market and just be Sony and Nintendo, but that would make the PS worse as any market does worse when it has no competition, even if the competition isn’t as strong of a contender like in the Xbox’s case, but just being there is enough to keep both more competitive. Then i hear all this MS “will” be a monopoly, or they are one, 30% marketshare say’s they are far from a monopoly and guessing what they will do with their studios in the future is all just fear mongering. Yes they should be more competitive with all these studios and have must have hit’s to drive sales but that is a good thing, especially for me cause i own all 3 and want them all doing something great and worth owning. But yes Nintendo is winning big for themselves, i can’t wait for the Switch 2 and get some more power, cause while i enjoy the Switch playing Zelda at 24FPS isn’t ideal. But i do disagree that MS would have Sony begging for games, they were giving out 10 year deals with COD and bringing other games on a case by case bases to PS and other platforms. The industry is always changing and time will tell where all these console makers end up in the next 5 or more years but the Big 3 are here to stay and will continue to have their player bases buying into their platforms and even growing new users. We shouldn’t ever be pulling for one of them to leave and give 100% marketshare away.
@MayaMousavi i agree with a lot of what you said and i want to start by saying thank you for being well respected gamer that carry’s a great debate, i enjoy these type of talks. Ok so now to a few points, i largely agree with MS buying out whole publishers is a bit much, BUT.. if they are for sale or struggling and they go up for sale i want the Big 3 looking into buying them and it’s unfortunate but only MS has that type of Studio size money. But if MS are going to do that i hope they don’t keep all the games off PS or Nintendo and it seems they won’t, clearly they will want to use some of that investment to keep their business numbers going in a direction they want. I think thats mostly fair. Second point is the ABK deal is not looking like a done deal, so it is a moot point at the moment to think they will even have Diablo, Overwatch or COD to grow or keep the games exclusive. If this deal doesn’t close what makes a gamer think they will be allowed to buy EA, UBI etc etc? Nintendo only making 2 great games a year is hardly what MS or even really Sony can do and thats reach the world and all it’s Kids with it’s IP’s, even if Halo infinite was a 10/10 and God of War Ragnarok basically is a 10/10 the best i could see those titles selling is 15 million units with maybe GOW hitting closer to 18-20, Nintendo releases Animal crossing and Mario kart and those sell 40 plus million units each and don’t drop in price. So it’s hard to say Xbox should release 2 good games a year and be selling consoles with the likes of Nintendo and Sony. Look i am a huge Xbox fan, have been since day 1, but a lot of what they are having to correct is self inflicted wounds, so i don’t give them any slack. They have to dig themselves out of their mistakes. But i love the Ecosystem, Controller and services and want them to be around to compete and keep my PS consoles honest and hungry and Sony right now has the better games and i play the heck out of my PS5. But i got news for both of them if the rumor is true that a docked Switch 2 will be the power of a Series S, and they fix their controllers and services up some, that will eat up a lot of my time away from the other 2. Nintendo is sitting pretty at the moment. 😀
@MayaMousavi well you make a strong point that MS does need those types of games for sure and yes Halo and Gears was that in the 360 years, and as i mentioned the Xbox one was their fault. So they now have to dig their way out and to do that i agree with you it needs to be great games and a few a year. I think they are on pace for that. Funny thing is and don’t blast me for it. I actually like RedFall, i have 15 hours already in it. But that is a mess at the moment, underneath all the tech issues i think is a neat game with the vampires and trapped island feel. But man that one needs work on everything from Bugs to AI to you name it. Most games in that state i wouldn’t even play, so the fact i like it still is kinda sad they didn’t polish it, cause i think it could have been a 78-82 meta score game. RedFall rant over, but yes agreed Starfield needs to be great, the one thing i love about Nintendo and Sony is i know they will put attention to detail and care and plenty of polish on their games. MS needs to build that trust moving forward with the old and new studios. HAHA fair enough you and me agree no one can compete with Nintendo. They have the ability to just crush sales. I think Animal crossing and Mario Kart 8 are still selling. The ABK deal i just don’t know about, i think it would be good for ABK to have better leaders than Bobby, i think the deal helps push cloud and Xboxes while not taking the heavy hitter in COD away from PS. I want to see the good in it cause it makes sense if it plays out that way, but i am not sold on it going through and if it does MS shouldn’t buy another one of that size. Support studios sure and timed deals but not another major publisher. Man this has been rewarding, it’s been a while since i have found someone smart and passionate about the industry without hating on the console brands and just talk good debates on the industry. I really appreciate you more than you know. 😀
@MayaMousavi well there’s a whole Phil Spencer said Great games don’t matter topic on here that is showing how “smart” the industry really is. He said if Starfield was a 11/10 it wouldn’t have PS users selling off their PS4’s and PS5’s to buy Xbox’s. He did not say great games don’t matter as the whole Push website is running with, so yes i very much enjoy our conversation cause well it’s smart and logical. Nintendo is just Nintendo, sometimes that is a great thing and sometimes it leaves me asking WTF are you thinking, but the end result is more times than not it sells and brings people lots of enjoyment and let’s be honest, this industry is about fun and enjoyment at the end of the day, not fighting or making fun of someone that likes a games or platform you don’t like. We get that, now it’s our job to spread it to 100’s of million of players. You go first HAHHA
