Much has been made of the gameplay reveal for Marvel's Spider-Man 2, which debuted during the PlayStation Showcase last week. The video, which runs just over ten minutes, features cutscenes, combat, and back-to-back set pieces in what is a breathless first look at how the PS5 exclusive will actually play.
The trailer racked up some serious numbers, topping 20 million views across multiple official YouTube channels. Although we have seen criticisms dotted about the internet — claims of it not looking current-gen enough, for example — the general consensus seems to be that it was an impressive showing.
And that's just a tiny glimpse of what Spider-Man 2 has to offer, says Peter Parker actor Yuri Lowenthal. In a brief red carpet interview with IGN, the veteran video game performer commented: "You saw the gameplay drop, some of you said 'ah, they showed too much!'. I assure you, you have seen nothing yet [...] we've just scratched the surface."
We're certainly inclined to believe Lowenthal on this one. After all, what kind of action game would reveal its hand in its first real gameplay trailer? We've seen Sony employ this tactic many times before, specifically with the Uncharted games. At events like E3, it would focus on one big, jaw-dropping set piece — only for the full release to boast many more.
We can't wait to see what kind of highs Marvel's Spider-Man 2 can hit. Are you looking forward to the return of Peter Parker and Miles Morales? Begin the hunt in the comments section below.

I have seen enough to see it's 1% improved 2018's Spider-Man. Which is awesome if you didn't just expect a bit more.
I’ve seen nothing until I’ve seen proper puddlage. I need puddles that make me feel wet!
Imo it’s fair criticism that’s SM2 is receiving about it not looking current gen but to also be fair on the other side of the coin, Insomniac did say that it was an old build. I can’t wait to see current builds of gameplay closer to launch
@AhmadSumadi puddleage!! 😂😂 love that word!👍🏻
@PSme it just sounds so right. 🤣
@SirMarshmallow watching it on a display bigger than a phone and with proper resolution it looks absolutely fine. People are complaining just for fake internet points.
John Linneman’s tweet showed it best regarding the water, a side by side comparison of in game footage and a photograph of water and some moron said the water in one pic looked terrible, only for it to be the photograph.
People just like to b**** about things that are hyped because it’s now the cool thing to do, especially if it’s Sony.
I'm a bit surprised folks are seemingly a bit lukewarm on the gameplay trailer. It looks great already and they still got a good while to go until launch to make it look even better. Sure the surfing section was a bit goofy looking but overall it looks great.
If there is one thing I'm absolutely positive about when it comes to Playstation 1st party it's that Spider-Man 2 will be great. Not a single doubt in my mind.
@Korgon for me I think there wasn’t enough new stuff shown off. It looked like more of the same Spider-Man to me, although I don’t know what I was expecting 😅. I’m sure it will still be fun and an overall great game, and I’m definitely playing it on day one, but I’m not as excited about it as I was expecting to be. Not sure this helps anyone, just my thoughts…
I personally thought it looked awesome. That slingshot across the city made me gasp with excitement. Strange how some people seem unimpressed =(
@mrmartinrohr exactly. Just another safe iteration. Happy for those that just want much of the same, but for many that's just not enough.
I'm pretty sure he's right, expecting some incredible set pieces in this new title. The Uncharted series probably still holds the crown though.
The whole mixed reaction to the trailer was just the same when the first game was shown "too on rails and QTEs" not to mention puddlegate.
@RonLonDonSwan People just have an unrealistic expectation of what "next gen graphics" look like, expecting some MASSIVE jump like we saw PS1->PS2 or PS2->PS3. The reality is they are already here. It's diminishing returns and incremental upgrades over PS4, made even less noticeable as many of us enthusiasts had mid-gen machines.
I looked at that Spider-man 2 trailer and was impressed by both the updates to the world geometry/detail and the faster traversal speed/streaming of assets. But I get it, that's not sexy for most!
@themightyant graphics last gen were already getting up there, I look at finer details now for current gen games and I always impressed with what I see. The textures on Miles’ and Peter’s suits looked so good it was sexy!
@Shstrick
Fair enough. Perhaps it just had too much pressure put on it considering it was the only 1st party game that wasn't a CG trailer from the showcase. It's tough to truly wow people with a sequel after all.
All these people complaining about the graphics. Sheesh.
This could look like a PS1 game for all I care. As long as the animations are good, the game runs at 60fps, and it has a half decent story, I’ll be playing this game.
@Impossibilium And here comes the big question: Why chose SIE to show a trailer with fast-paced action in 30 fps? It immediately makes a bad impression, especially compared to Deluxe and Miles Morales which run at 60 fps with Ray-Tracing on.
@Max_the_German It makes sense to me. When you’re trying to show off your big AAA game in a showcase, you want people to see it looking as good as it can. Imagine the complaints if they hadn’t!
60fps only matters when you’re playing the game. I didn’t even notice the lower framerate watching the showcase. But I sure as hell notice it when I go back to play a 30fps game after playing a 60fps game.
As long as they don’t pull a Gotham Knights and not offer a Performance mode, I don’t think it’s anything we need to be concerned about. I trust Insomniac and Sony enough not to do that.
Yea I'll save judgment for the final game. I'm not worried about graphics. I'm smart enough to understand that the final game I pop into my ps5 will obviously look better than what was shown on a youtube video. I'm curious about the gameplay. I didnt really see anything all that different from the first game. Nothing really wowed me
@Impossibilium I think that 60 fps always has more punch for a first impression. And I get your argument with the higher resolution, but the video is in 1080p with bad compression. 1080p30 with low bitrate is pretty much the worst way of presenting a shiny new game!
@Max_the_German I wasn’t thinking about resolution. Although it would be part of a Quality mode in the game, I was referring more to the texture quality and the ray tracing effects that you mentioned.
And yeah, I agree that live-streaming is not the best way to present a showcase, if you can’t stream at 4K. Better to just post it as a video and give people the option. But most trailers get separate 4K videos afterward, so they’re there for the people interested in seeking them out.
@Impossibilium I agree, and I was wrong with my 1080p30:This is the best format on the Marvel channel, while on the PS channel it’s 4k30. Funny that the Marvel video has more views and is therefore the first result when searching on YT.
I've seen no complaints about the gameplay myself. All I've seen is hype/excitement. Like others have said, the people that are dissing the game are the same that were mad at puddles in the first. Just trolls looking for attention. The vast majority of people are hyped for the game. Heck the gameplay trailer (if you count both uploads) is close to 20 million views already!
I hope they dial the collectathon elements down a bit.
Either way it’ll be a day one purchase for me though.
I can’t wait! Hope we get a date soon!
@MidnightDragonDX @Brawl4002 @Impossibilium @Zoidpilot4 @Korgon Same here mega hyped for Spidey 2!
Here's hoping we get a solid date confirmed during Summer Games Fest. I'm thinking a September or October release that will be delayed to November.
Either that or announced as November immediately...I just don't see them competing well with what's dropping in October.
October 2023
Sword Art Online: Last Recollection (PS5) - October 6th
Assassin's Creed: Mirage (PS5) - October 12
Lords of the Fallen 2 (PS5) - October 13
Alan Wake II (PS5) - October 17
Alone in the Dark Remake (PS5) - October 25
@KidRyan Considering how much the first two Spider-Man games sold, I would think all of those games would be afraid of competition with Spider-Man 2, not the other way around. 🙃
@Impossibilium I agree 100%! I honestly think late September would be the release date.
