As is the case across much of Europe right now, Sony is beginning to roll out PS5 price promotions in the United States as well. The ever on-the-ball Wario64 spotted a Target flyer, promoting a $449.99 price point for the new-gen system starting this Sunday. That’s a $50 saving on the console’s usual $499.99 MSRP.
It’s not the only PS5 product on sale either: DualSense controllers will be available for $49.99, while first-party games like Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, The Last of Us: Part I, and Gran Turismo 7 will also be discounted. All in all, considering this is a random weekend in early August, the savings aren’t to be sniffed at.
Sony enjoyed its best month in 15 years in June 2023, according to latest Circana’s sales report for the US video game industry. Similar price promotions in the UK have propelled PS5 up 75 per cent, and have also had an impressive impact on software sales. It’s probably safe to assume the Japanese giant is going for the jugular, then – all while it clears stock ahead of a strongly rumoured hardware revision later this year.

Makes sense. When Microsoft acquires ABK everyone will want an xbox.
@Triumph741 nice try xbox still selling like trash currently.
Sales will further Explodes.....Sony Makin way for revised model ...
The series X & S is being outsold 4-1 by PS5 and 2/3-1 by Switch. ABK will barely impact this. Mark these words
I think that these price-cuts are a reaction on the ABK deal, SIE wants to keep its pole position by all means. Even if that means short-term losses.
@Max_the_German I'm sure there are no losses, PS5 was making money on each console in 2021, safe to say they're still making money per console as manufacturing costs will have decreased further.
@theMEGAniggle all parts, supplies and labor costs are up considerably since 2021.
@Triumph741 People said the same when they bought Bethesda....
The bigger Sony’s lead, the less likely MS will be to pull any stunts once this deal goes through.
@deathaxe Zenimax is a part of Bethesda which they bought a few years ago.
@deathaxe Acti/Blizz is a separate entity. Zenimax is the parent company of Bethesda and M$ have already acquired that.
With them discounting the controllers as well I think they are simply trying to push out more units - rather than trying to rid of inventory.
@deathaxe Zenimax is the parent company of Bethesda Studios, which is what Xbox payed 7 billion for, they are not under Activision/ Blizzard and the 60 gazillion dollars Xbox is paying for Call of Duty, and WoW/ Diablo
They
@deathaxe i the term is epic fail
Probably a two for one - try and saturate the market as much as possible to keep Xbox at bay and clear out existing stock in preparation for the new model.
@Triumph741 i laughed so hard i almost sharted 🤣
Record sales going into a discount, followed up closely by Spider-Man 2. This shizz bout to snowball.
Yeah we are definitely getting that Slim revision this year.
@mikey856 it's definitely not that big of a gap this generation, even with PS's 40m+ figures, Last known Xbox figures is at around 21m, so even then it's only 2-1 , but I get your point.
@IAmAshCohen17 I think @mikey856 is meaning currently the gap is widening at a fast pace, Sony sales are growing (hardware) whereas MS noted a decline.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner in that regard, yes I would agree with that statement.
So is this price drop ending on the 10th August? @get2sammyb
@Sequel i both hope this is a joke and hope this is real at the same time.
Just replaced my 3rd controller from drift. Getting a warranty extension is mandatory for these things.
Has anyone checked to see if this isn't Sony putting the PS5 on sale but rather only Target?
Can't see Target wanting to take that loss but the flyers for Best Buy, Walmart, etc should be out by now, anybody see where else this sale is happening? 🤷
I still think it's stock clear out for the slim later this year. There was no other reason for the Spiderman bundles to come out 7 weeks, nearly 2 months, before the game. A week or 2, ok maybe, but 7 weeks? Nah. If new Slim Spiderman bundles get announced in early October it's going to be hilarious around here.😂
meanwhile, after 7 years, nintendo still has not dropped the msrp of the switch...
It really is a sad state of affairs at Xbox right now. Subscriptions have totally stalled(across all offerings not just GP) but when that’s your main business model, we’ll it’s frankly a failure
@deathaxe Your confused. Its ABK they are buying:- Activision, Blizzard, King. Zenimax was already purchased.
@rjejr:
All retailers are having the same price of $449.
It’s a “back to school sale”.
@Triumph741
Hahaha. MS were saying they are going to put up the price of Xbox and Sony counteracts by cutting the price of PS5. MS have learnt nothing since they entered the console market.
Good strategy by Sony. The PS5 is Sony’s bread and butter. Microsoft has XBOX and PC. Sony’s smart to bring its amazing exclusives to PC. There are so many people that by PS5 and have a PC. Then you really don’t need an XBox.
@kazuyamushima Thanks. I did see that on the app formerly known as Twitter yesterday, and I was going to come back and comment on it, but I tend not to write much on the weekends, it's my time to relax. 😁
