Another month, another record broken for the PS5, which is really beginning to steamroll now. According to Circana (previously NPD) data, Sony’s new-gen system was the best-selling console in the United States across both units and dollar sales metrics in June 2023. In fact, consumer spending on PlayStation hardware reached its highest June total in 15 years, while unit sales were at their highest since June 2010. In other words: the console is cooking.
It’s no surprise looking at the best-selling software either: Diablo 4, Final Fantasy 16, and Street Fighter 6 took the top three spots – three new releases all popular on the PS5. Diablo 4 is already the third best-selling game of the year, while Final Fantasy 16 is the ninth – not bad considering the latter is only available on a single system. Street Fighter 6, meanwhile, doubled the launch month sales of Street Fighter 5.
We’ve included the full list of best-sellers below. With Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 right around the corner and rumours of a revised PS5 hardware model on the way, it looks like the second half of the year is going to be pretty much unstoppable for PlayStation.

god of war Ragnarok has to be closing in at 20 million by now.
This is why Blizzard doesn't want any part of Gamepass.
Offers on PS5 in July will help to keep the momentum going no doubt!
Kind of funny that these numbers debunk a good part of the fan boy "discussions" this year:
@ED_209 Too true.
We've been talking a lot lately about how people are absolutely entitled to their own subjective opinion, but assuming that opinion equates to objective fact or reality is often a mistake.
@StrawberryTurtle minecraft is consistently in the charts, and that's on gamepass
Well done Sony. The PS5 is a little behind the PS4, but has plenty of time to catch up
@deathaxe Selling the game at full price is more profitable than selling a Battle Pass. You can easily put 100+ hours in without spending any real money.
@StrawberryTurtle Microsoft have already said in Court that COD etc will be going to gamepass
@Sekijo well Diablo will not be day 1, as its already came out before the merger closed. But yes, COD and all other ABK games will be comming to gamepass day 1 once any current contracts have ended (if there are any) Just like all the other first party games from Microsoft and Bethesda
@StrawberryTurtle @Sakai @Splat I jumped on gamepass the last 18 months and love it. Been a blessing for me, hundreds of games and I've been earning with MS rewards and have earned £150 in store credit and 4 free months of ultimate. As well as having played 140 games and given a bit of money to charity.
But
They are scaling back the rewards and more importantly. Almost every big game is launching with paid early access, extra items, fast progression, character / car packs etc. The games are designed with nerfed levelling in mind too. I am worried where we are headed. This monetisation is kicking back on the value proposition now prices have increased to £17 per month for ultimate.
@Sekijo think the latest rumor is that microsoft is going to restrict atleast some of the day 1 games to Ultimate which i assume will go over $20 a month shortly after the acquisition
@Sekijo not to hand no. But I'm sure Google will provide you what you are looking for.
Here's a quote from the CMA for example:
"in the same CMA (Competitions and Markets Authority) report where the UK regulator attempted to block the Microsoft Activision deal on UK shores.
Discussing when the Activision Blizzard benefits on Xbox Game Pass might take effect, the CMA went on record as predicting “CoD arriving on Game Pass in 2025”
It was stated multiple times during the US trial, that ABK games will be going to gamepass day 1. That's one of the main selling points of gamepass. All first party day 1
ff16 wasn't very....good
@ED_209 facts don't matter to these people. No matter what you present to them, they will simply twist it into something else just so they can feel they were right and everyone else is wrong
@Rob_230
I could be wrong but I don't think ps5 was on sale in July in the usa like it was and currently is here in the UK. We are already in August, so if the rumoured 50 dollar discount starts this month, then it won't have a effect on July's circana are whatever the stupid word is 🤔 😂
@StrawberryTurtle
If the ABK disaster goes through, the games will be on Game Pass and ABK's game sales will tank even further on Xbox. That would be no less than what Xbox deserves, since that's what they are asking for.
@Sekijo It was the first time, ever, where i skipped through entire dialogue sections. I did every sidequest up until right before the final boss when 20 more showed up and i audibly groaned. Skipped those and glad i did because it turns out none of it even mattered or helped with final boss bc of how you fight it. It is so repetitive, so monotonous
Removed - flaming/arguing
@StrawberryTurtle They will be included in gamepass but it will be nowhere near sustainable for those huge releases, we've already seen it with Starfield they have had to raise the price of gamepass and try and get more money off people by selling the game to gamepass subscribers for 5 day "early" access, which is just a big con.
@themcnoisy I fear your post resonates with me. I have another 18 months of ultimate paid up, so I'm in regardless, but for me, GP this year is getting worse. We used to get 20+games a month, now its far fewer- often less than half that, and not many big hitters.
Smaller titles and indies are great for a large section of their customers, I get that, but I'm only in it for big titles on day 1.
There's been precious few of them, and when they do arrive, they are not on 'day 1' at all as we will all of seen those who paid money posting clips on the net for a week before we can play them. Hoping for better things with Starfield and Motorsport, but quite frankly, PS plus has given me more titles I want to play so far this year.
Really hope that changes as GP is my main reason for having a series X and I'm not personally getting the value from it that I expected. The summer show and titles I'm expecting at least have me optimistic that the situation will change, but I fear that MS is losing too much ground atm and they are not helping themselves....
Maybe I’m missing something, but a quick search shows that the PS3 was getting its hat handed to it in June of 2010 by the Wii and 360. Not quite sure what to make of this, but hey, it’s just numbers!
Game Hardware Sales, June 2010 (US)
Nintendo DS 510.7K
Xbox 360 451.7K
Wii 422.5K
PlayStation 3 304.8K
PSP 121.0K
When you read online about Xbox diehards saying all PS 1st party games are just movies with hardly any gameplay or that Spidey2 is just a bloated dlc or the PS5 itself and the DualSense are crap and not doing so well. It's just a coping mechanism that's all it is, the reality is opposite of course
The Greatstation 5. Unstoppable. Untouchable. Jimmy Jim is the main man of that success. The man who built the indestructible fortress in Europe now runs the entire Playstation. Long live big Jimmy.
So if Playstation spending reached its highest June total in 15 years, that means June 2008 was higher (as well as all other years between). Interestingly, this was still firmly in the struggling PS3 era. Seems pretty shocking that's the best June they've had.
Just goes to show that having the most powerful console on the market doesn't mean jack s**t. Keep up the good work sony, also shows why Jim's in the position he is.
@Splat lol what. No part of gamepass.
Blizzard pocketed 69B.
@Cashews They literally said they don't want to be on Gamepass lol. They won't have a choice but they won't be thrilled about it.
Regarding CoD on Game pass:
Isn't CoD like a $60 game w/ a $30 worth of "season pass" extras? Wouldn't take much to put it on Gamepass, sell it for like $20 on PC, Switch and PS5, then make it $100 for the season pass. Who knows, could even go all in on "free-to-play" like FF14.
CoD will be on GP, MS won't lose any money over it. Destiny 2 is $100 for the year.
@Splat All of their employees are expendable. Personally I'd carve out the core left that still have talent and clean house with the rest. I'd have at least 75% or more thrown out on the street Year 1. Rebuild from the ground up and count the days until Kotick gets lost.
tldr - who cares what they think. their best days cannot even be seen in the rearview. All they have done in the past half decade is erode their iconic brands.
@deathaxe I wish it was called diabolo ,rolls off the tongue better 😁
@StrawberryTurtle Depends if MS or Activision will have the final say on that.
The sooner people understand that Sony and Microsoft are going in two seperate ways the better. Playstation will continue to push consoles and Microsoft will push subscriptions.
Playstation can keep doing what they are doing.
Final Fantasy XVI is a beast and a great addition to the PS5 library. Also, I'd be interested to know what the current sales figures are for God of War Ragnarok.
@Americansamurai1 maybe more as it’s bundled with the PS5. I bought it day 1, great game!
@HonestHick yeah I got it day one too, my goty for last year. It's pretty crazy how popular gow is. Really wonder what's going to happen if the show ends up being poplar what is it going to do to the sales
@StrawberryTurtle MS is known to be worth over 2 Trillion dollars, so they have to make some good decisions from time to time. Even tho the Xbox is the only thing made by MS i have in the house as i have been with apple for 19 years now. There was a email a guy was reading on YouTube one day that said, MS isn’t concerned about profit per game as they have a goal of 200 million GP subscribers between console & PC. That amount of monthly revenue along with having players into the ecosystem will be massive shift for them. The CEO of MS said publicly his goal is to double Xbox’s revenue by 2030. At the moment Sony is at 24 Billion, Xbox at 16 billion and Nintendo at 12 billion. I support all 3 but i see the long game plans of GP being a real issue for Sony and others if they don’t have an answer. Services start at a loss or low profit for all companies. But when they take off and get to that point of huge monthly users, they can become very brand loyal users. Apple TV plus can’t seem to grab many of Netflix’s users, Spotify isn’t losing user’s etc etc. hard to tell yet where GP will be in 5 years time. Could dud out or explode.
@Beerheadgamer82 Whenever any fanboy of a platform speaks down on the competition it is looked at as silly and nonsensical. All 3 have something great about them, all 3 are making money. Take the Xbox one as an example people make fun of the launch, and 58-59 million sales. Yes they messed up with that launch, 100% but ask the Wii-U, Sega Dreamcast, Panasonic, Google Stadia and countless others if they would have liked near 60 million sales. Meaning yes it is half of the PS4, but it’s not a dead brand even tho fanboys of the opposite side would like to spin it. Sony PS as a brand is alive and well, no opposite fanboy can spin that differently, wow one half decent showcase and PS is dead? That is just a waste of broadband internet to post things like that. Arguing over gaming has become way to much of a thing and so has well i prefer this console so all the others suck. That is just not true. I ain’t saying you do this, i ain’t saying everyone acts that way. I am just saying appreciate and enjoy the industry as a whole more and yes that might include having to own more than one console to do so. Neither of the Big 3 are leaving. 😊
@Americansamurai1 i hope it does great things. It’s a great franchise and i very much look forward to them when they get announced and released. Can’t wait to see what’s next. 😊
@HonestHick yeah me too. I think Santa Monica has 2 projects in the works with one being a new IP and the other being the next gow most likely.
And none were a 1st party developed game. Amazing job by Sony to provide a good platform for others to make games 👏👏👏
@Americansamurai1 i hope they do. I like their games a lot. Hope they go RPG or something else and then of course GOW. Can’t wait to see what they show. Might be waiting a while tho. This gen has been so ………. SLOW for game and i own all 3 consoles. Just not enough big next gen games yet.
@HonestHick I heard it might be sci-fi. Yeah hopefully the game releases pick up next year, they have a ton of studios not to mention their second party stuff.
This is why I hate Jim Ryan. All he cares about is money and building the brand.
@Americansamurai1 yeah something sci fi from them could be really cool. Would love to see what they do with that. Yeah some heavy hitters will be coming in 2024 for all 3 platforms i hope. Should give me something new to try out.
@HonestHick yeah I agree 2024 should be stacked.
"* Digital sales not included" - that makes this list meaningless as 72% of sales are digital now
@Reptilio You’re right - it wasn’t very good, it was great.
@KaijuKaiser they were all the same, the akashic or whatever
