Baldur’s Gate 3 will launch as a PS5 console exclusive early next month – but in a rare occurrence, there’s been no behind-the-scenes shenanigans from Sony to make that the case. The reason the game is coming to Sony’s system before the Xbox Series X|S has always been due to development issues with Microsoft’s machine, specifically it’s cheaper, lower-powered new-gen option.
The problem, according to Larian Studios, is that it’s been unable to effectively get split-screen running on the low-cost Xbox Series S, and as Microsoft has mandated parity between its two consoles, it meant it needed to delay the game while it worked through the issues. Now, perhaps in response to the release’s sensational Metacritic score, the Redmond firm has backtracked.
Writing on Twitter, CEO Swen Vincke said that following discussions with Xbox chief Phil Spencer, Baldur’s Gate 3 will now come to Xbox later this year. There is a caveat, however: the Xbox Series S version will not feature split-screen co-op. Before this backtrack on Microsoft’s part, it was assumed the title wouldn’t release until next year on the Redmond firm’s formats.
While there is no date attached, this does make PS5’s accidental period of console exclusivity shorter, but it’ll still get the game first – in a little under two weeks, in fact. It’ll be interesting to see what this means for Microsoft’s strategy moving forward, as it’s always billed Xbox Series S as a low-cost entry into the new generation, but this move may set a precedent where developers cut features from the device, making it less enticing than originally intended.

Xbox Series S, the console of compromise.
@General_Disarray This certainly doesn't help. I imagine now the plaster's been ripped off, this will happen more frequently at this point.
@General_Disarray Just recently the Series S has been sold for 180€ during Prime Days. I guess for that price people should expect some compromises compared to the Series X
So much for the parity between the S and X. Now this has happened once more and more developers will do the same going forward.
Hopefully the series S holding back
developers doesn't effect us playstation gamers with third party games not being the best they can because of compromises they have to make.
@LightningLeader Why do we need to care for Xbox players, they don't care we lost 2 of the biggest multiplatform publishers due to acquisitions by MS. In fact, they are extremely happy for this.
Starfield should have been multiplatform, same for Elders Scrolls 6 and next Crash Bandicoot if there will ever be one.
So that essentially makes the Series S the console that older relatives/non-gamers accidentally buy for their kids for Christmas
@UltimateOtaku91 wasn’t the Series S the reason why Gotham Knights was only hitting 30fps across all consoles?
@Sil_Am couldn’t agree more.
All this talk about compromise for the Series S makes me wonder why the same didn't apply for PS5 digital 🤔.... Anywho; The Sept 6th battle between Starfield and Baldurs Gate 3 is well and truly spicing up - or it would be if for the fact you can get one of these games for free 🙂
Oh great, another Xbox-related article on Push Square. I can't wait to hear more people complain about the Microsoft buyout of Activision because I love hearing people complain about the same thing over and over and over and over and over and over again.
Anyways, yay, more people can experience Baldur's Gate 3 this year. Too bad people can't be happy for other people and instead have to complain about something they will stop caring about in a few years time, then half of those people will go on to pray that Sony acquires Square Enix.
@ironcrow86 what is it you wondering? Why do people never talk about compromises on PS5 digital? You trolling or genuinely thinking why?
@ironcrow86 Maybe because the PS5 digital has exactly the same specs as the PS5 disk version, it isn't a weaker console like the Series S is.
From Microsoft’s perspective this might actually sell more Xbox X’s, or cause fewer people to say, Stuff it, I’ll get a PS5 to play this. I always thought the Xbox S was a weird move. Sure it gets people on board with Xbox at a lower price point, but it was always going to split their market at some point
@LightningLeader I'd take timed exclusivity over buying the entire company. You guys should stop comparing these, it's overused by now and makes no sense.
Do you think I was mad I got Rise of The Tomb Raider a year later, and a better version also? I wasn't.
It's not the same thing. Stop using this excuse.
MS lied about feature parity with the S, we all knew this would happen one day. The Acti deal will be no different.
Of course, exclusives sell consoles, but I don't have to care that xbox players can't play Baldur's Gate 3 or other game not on their platform, just like they don't care that I can't play Starfield.
@General_Disarray Yes you're right
https://www.google.com/amp/s/metro.co.uk/2022/10/18/xbox-series-s-is-holding-back-entire-generation-and-gotham-knights-17584273/amp/
The Series S is a blemish on current gen gaming and is effecting new game releases even for Playstation players. I'd also wager starfield would have been 60fps if it wasn't for the Series S and maybe wouldn't have been delayed either.
I can also guarantee Microsoft won't be putting out a cheaper weaker console next gen, they've learnt their lesson.
Seems a bit pointless getting the series s unless money is the problem
@XboxTheBestBox You mean the developer didn't like that he was speaking out and didn't want any backlash. Why would he lie to begin with.
Also let's not pretend he is the only one to speak out against the series S.
@XboxTheBestBox So he needs "help" because he gave his opinion that goes against Xbox.
Okay..... 👍
@XboxTheBestBox Any game still being released on PS4/Xbox one as well is definitely being held back, same goes for titles like God of War Ragnarok, HFW etc
Developers make the game with weakest console in mind, otherwise they can go all out and make the best game possible without worrying about older specs holding them back.
@XboxTheBestBox I can't speak for everyone but me Personally I'm tired of cross gen, I want current gen games to be the best they can, sometimes I play cross gen games and I can tell it was designed for older software just like Ragnarok. I haven't bought a PS5 to play games I could of played on PS4 and saved money on a new console.
The Series S is built to hit that sub $300 price point and still deliver the same 'next gen' games as its 'Premium' big brother that was built for the '4k' era - much like One X /Pro.
Just like the PS4/XB1S compared to the 'Pro/XB1X', the Series S doesn't have the same Visual Quality and even lacks 'Performance' modes of the 'X'. Games on X/Pro looked better and 'sometimes' offered 'Performance 60fps modes., so the fact the 'S' , a console costing 'half' the price of an X or around the Price of a Switch, maybe lacks some 'features' should come as NO surprise.
You didn't complain on PS4/XB1S when PS4 Pro/XB1X got better visuals and/or Performance modes not available on their 'much cheaper' system.
@XboxTheBestBox Well as far as I remember this is the only gen (for playstation) that the previous console is still being supported after 3 years of the new console being out. The PS2 sold way more than the PS4 yet when it released they stopped making PS1 games and same with the PS3 they stopped making ps2 games and same with PS4 stopped making PS3 games apart from the odd game like Fifa. So I don't think Sony would of been worried about leaving the previous gen behind so soon. But so far I have to wonder what the point of this gen was and if it could of waited a few more years.
@get2sammyb they should have started with Starfield though. There's no way that game is as good as it could be due to their own idiocy in trying to corner the cheaper alternative market, whilst also boasting about the 12 teraflop godliness of the X being the most powerful console... In the world.
Good signs for Larian and the actual game though, if it's a third party that has finally got this much needed step done. And now maybe we can all move on to the "next gen" properly and Xbox can stop limiting themselves and provide some competition at some point
@Al3 good for the Switch, I don’t care but good for it and still doesn’t change the fact that the series S is a potato and holding back this gen.
Devs shouldn’t have to compromise their vision to account for weaker hardware.
@BAMozzy The problem with that logic is that the Xbox One S and PS4 were the base models and both were on a par with each other performance wise. Both were also released well before any higher performance models were announced so they became the standard and games being developed with them as the primary performance target was widely accepted because of this. Now, going by your theory the PS5 is the base PlayStation model and the Series S is the base Xbox model with the Series X being a performance model that is offering games with roughly the same performance as the base PlayStation. That is a situation that I can only see causing some problems somewhere down the line.
@PixelDragon “At this point I don't know if it really is a complete lack of understanding the obvious difference or just blatant trolling.”
The answer is both. It’s both.
@Kevw2006 That's 'perception' but you could also look at it that the PS4 Pro/XB1X was 'targeting' the Premium '4k' experience as 4K became more a thing 'during' last gen with the 'base' hardware perfectly adequate for those who don't have 4k TV's.
As there are still millions globally who still game on HD TV's, the 'base' screen resolution these days, they are 'catering' to that market where as Sony decided to leave them behind or 'force' them to buy more expensive Hardware that they won't really benefit from the Premium features on.
The One S was 'significantly' weaker by comparison to the One X than the Series S is compared to the Series X. CPU wise, its on a par with PS5/Series X and whilst the GPU/RAM is scaled down, its expected to scale down the 'graphics'. The GPU on the One S was less than a quarter in raw power compared to the X, much less RAM too and a bigger difference in CPU too. That is a 'clear' indication the Series S is designed to 'scale' graphics down from 4k to 1080-1440p.
The difference between last gen and this is really that at the start of last gen, few, if any console gamers were connecting TV's to '4k' displays whereas in 2020, both HD and 4k Console gamers existed and MS opted to make a 'cheaper' entry system but Sony decided to go straight to the 'Premium' 4k system - perhaps because they also want to create a demand for and sell 4k TV's too...
Whilst there is a large consumer base still on 'HD', then why shouldn't a Console target those - like the Switch does too at a 'similar' price point that seems to be a sweet spot for selling too...
@Al3 Most games on Series S run at a lower resolution in performance modes than on Series X
Series s is a great wee machine, picked one up as a gamepass box for a couple hundred quid and have no complaints 👍
Baldur's gate is going to be a instant classic on ps5.both ps4 divinity original sin enhanced games are masterpieces.word up son
I think its great that as many people as possible get to play this game..
(i dont have an xbox btw)
@HotGoomba
You would just prefer to be kept in the dark about gaming news? If anything, I get annoyed when Push Square writes like only the PS4 and PS5 exist.
It was a good choice as BG3 should be availibe to as many people as possible. I always thought trying to get feature partity on a console that is now over £200 cheaper than the main was was the wrong idea. I guess you could argue the lack of RT on Series S games means this actually happened ages ago. Series S is a must have for PS gamers that want to play gamepass titles and basically the best AAA xbox games. I picked one up with my PS5 at launch and have not regretted it! I feel sorry for those who hate on other consoles for no logical reason.
Oh, boy. Console warrior cringe. My favorite!
This can only be a good thing in terms of xbox users being able to play.
Ive always believed splitting sku's is a bad idea, and this situation shows why. Hopefully this situation doesn't open pandoras box and see series s relegated to running games missing features.
Even if the game came out on the same day as the PS version, it’s unlikely it would do well on Xbox since it will be head to head against Starfield.
Even with the game still will be earlier on PlayStation, it’s been out a lot longer on PC and even Steamdeck certified. It’s not that big of a celebration, at least based on all the “you can also play that game on PC” opinions that we tend to hear.
@BAMozzy The Series S may have been designed to scale down the graphics but it's becoming a lot clearer that it's not so straightforward. There have been quite a few games release now without 60fps on series S at launch, split screen issues with BG3 and possibly other games too. None of these would be an issue if it was simply a matter of scaling down. PS5 and Series X have other benefits over just 4K and they need to keep up with PC to an extent as well or nobody on console would be getting BG3 for a very long time at least.
It's simply a matter of opinion whether you think that Sony or Microsoft took the right approach and neither one is necessarily correct. Although my only comment is there there definitely seems to be much less issues developing for PS than there are for Xbox at the moment.
I'd bet one of the reason or ideas behind series S is to temp people to game pass with a cheaper machine, knowing a % of those will eventually upgrade to bigger box.
Glad MS done this as the SS is clearly becoming an issue and i'm saying this as a SS owner.
Looks like Phil has opened a can of worms. You cant have one set of standards for ‘great’ games and another set for ‘not so great’.
Why would the Series S hold back any games releasing on the PlayStation, @UltimateOtaku91? Can you actually name one instance where this has happened? Baldur's Gate 3 releasing on the PlayStation BEFORE the Xbox demonstrates the polar opposite of what you are saying.
I know how you love to come on here and bash the Xbox, but if you are going to do so, at least come up with something that stands up to some scrutiny...
No, @General_Disarray, the Series S was not behind the 30fps decision. It was a Developer decision because of the design of the game. Never, at any moment, was it suggested that the S was the reason. Well, other than maybe a few disgruntled players, that were not actually privy to the Developers decision...
@PixelDragon or just you trying to justify what one company does is ok, but the other one is not. It is well known that Sony was approaching everyone to get third party exclusives. Microsoft had biggest pockets and to counter this decided to buy publishers. Sony doesn’t get to set the rules nor the market is defined by Sony’s financial limitations.
Good, I always knew the S was a bad idea. MS didn’t realize a dev would do this with a big blockbuster game, and now realized it may have been a while, if ever, they got BG3.
A weaker console was always going to hold things back.
I predicted this, and I think the S is going to start losing games at some point, or get terrible versions. Then MS will have more damage control due to another bad decision.
I hope the UK keeps blocking that Activision deal and forces MS to actually make good product decisions for the first time since the 360.
@Fiendish-Beaver
Potato gonna potato, it’s a shame that series S gamers can’t experience split screen because it can’t handle it.
MS should have done what Sony did this gen and offer a discless version, it’d still be as powerful as the X and the devs wouldn’t have to make compromises just to launch their games.
Hopefully Phil Spencer and the folks at Xbox realize it was a mistake this gen.
I bought Series S as a second console to play Starfield etc. Didn't felt right to buy X. Maybe it should never existed, but it does. Problem is that Microsoft advertised it as a machine that would mainly deliver 1440p/60 not 1080p/30.
@number1024 i can’t wait for Xbox Series 1X 360 Purple monkey dishwasher.
I am sure Microsoft had good intentions when it came to the Series S. Hindsight is only 20/20 and it's not as if Microsoft could predict every single little scenario.
The engineers for this stuff aren't fools.
At the time of developing the specs for this console, I am sure Microsoft reached out to developers and engine makers to determine if the Series S was something that could be doable given the range within PC space - keep in mind PC has more overhead than consoles, so specs tend to be higher to get "console" quality.
Now, did Microsoft shoot itself in the foot with initial PR with regards to the Series S? Yes, absolutely - and I think Microsoft is acknowledging that when it says that it has "learned" from this scenario.
But I don't think the idea was ill-placed. Microsoft wanted a budget machine to get people into their ecosystem - even if that meant being a secondary console.
Baldur's Gate 3 is on Steam Deck. People who own a Steam Deck understand the limitations of the system. The Steam Deck isn't holding back PC development.
I am sure Microsoft understands where it went wrong with Series S. I am sure Microsoft will learn from that mistake.
But, you know, if you go over to Pure Xbox, Series S owners are fine with this as long as the game releases.
Did Microsoft "lie" to its consumers? I would say not intentionally.
Microsoft can't back down from Series S unless it plans to significantly ramp up Series X development and offer some kind of 1:1 trade-in value for Series S towards a Series X (where the owner now has to pay the retail difference in price). That is a logistical nightmare!
The path has been forged, so it's best to stay the course. If that means that Microsoft has to consider dropping non-graphical feature parity on a case-by-case basis, then so be it.
If Microsoft continues to make dedicated consoles for next generation, I am sure there won't be a split SKU.
Plus, remember that the majority of gamers are casuals. So as long as Series S continues to run Fortnite, Call of Duty, FIFA, Madden, etc. then it will continue to sell. They probably don't even know what Baldur's Gate 3 is or couldn't care less about the game.
Removed - flaming/arguing
@Kevw2006 How do you know WHAT the reasons are those games couldn't be made to run with Split-screen, 60fps etc - its not as if OTHER Developers can't achieve those targets.
Most games (if not ALL) are often not utilising the CPU in these 'new' consoles efficiently or even to their fullest capability. They aren't using Multi-threading, not balancing the 'load' across the Cores effectively etc.
Baldurs Gate started out as a PS4/XB1S 'project', built for single thread CPU's and don't have the budget/resources to spend a LOT of time to make a 'niche' feature work at launch.
You also have to remember that during the last gen, CPU's were the 'weak' link so they pushed traditionally CPU tasks to GPU. Their engines were designed around 'Strong GPU/weak CPU' combinations. You can't scale down AI/Physics etc without changing the game-play experience and if that's using GPU instead of CPU, that won't scale.
Point is, it also depends on the Devs and the way they built their game. If it started out 'before' next gen hardware, there is a bigger chance that they built their game to 'run' on weak CPU Hardware but with the Series S, you have a Strong CPU and more 'limited' GPU which would make it hard to 'scale' down Physics/AI etc (traditionally CPU tasks) if they are built to use the GPU because of 'weak' CPU's.
As you know, we still haven't really had a 'true' next gen game released yet, one that is built 'specifically' with next gen hardware - utilising ALL the 'next-gen' hardware features.
They haven't stated 'Split-screen' won't come to Series S at a later date, they just stated that it won't be a feature at launch to ensure that they can release BG3 on Xbox in 2023. Who knows with MS's 'technicians' that went out recently can do to help.
If a game was designed to hit 60fps or Split Screen was 'essential' from the start, it wouldn't be an issue either. Call of Duty will be 60fps and may even have 120fps mode on Series S too - like Gears 5. Split screen games exist and run well on Series S too - so its not the 'Hardware', but more the time, money, effort and 'importance' of those features to the Dev. If they 'designed' it for 30fps but find they can 'drop' res/graphics and hit '60fps' - that's a developer decision. Its still a '30fps' game at 'premium' Graphical settings - otherwise you are getting 'entry' tier/Series S 1080p Graphics to play at 60fps.
Again, its an Entry tier console, like the PS4 or XB1S is for those who just want to play the 'new' games on a budget or can't take advantage of 120fps or resolutions over 1080p on their Display. Much like people couldn't see the point of 'upgrading' to Pro/X as they didn't need or justify the cost to have 'performance' modes, higher quality 'graphics' etc.
If you 'want' the Premium 4k, equivalent to a PS5 like experience in a Console, they have the Series X. The Series S is the 'HD' version of the Series X, just like the PS4 or XB1S was. If you want the 'highest' tier, MS don't need to make a 'Pro' as the PC market has that option...
@XboxTheBestBox I mean I own both so doesn't affect me in the slightest ,starfield looks great and I cant wait to play it ,I wish I could use my ps5 pad though ,far far superior to that hunk of clicky plastic junk ,microsoft bundled with a premium console,2024 is gonna be good year for xbox gamers I feel ,even better for owners of both consoles,I'm looking forward to sonys response to microsofts buyouts,and there will be a response,of that I have no doubt.
I think you are entirely correct, @General_Disarray, and I have been saying the same for months. The way that Sony did it this generation is likely the better way forward, though I can also see the benefits of having a low cost entry for the purposes of Game Pass. Without Microsoft swallowing big, maybe even 50%, losses , I cannot see them managing to bringing out a discless console as cheap as the S, whilst keeping the the inner guts the same as the X. When Spencer says they have learned lessons this generation, I believe him. What he does about it this, and next generation, is another matter entirely...
@Sil_Am You do realise that Sony had went to Bethesda/Zenimax to tie up Starfield as an exclusive after the deal for Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo.
Microsoft was never letting Bethesda leave the Xbox ecosystem.
@Sil_Am Probably because this isn’t a war and neither of these corporate giants deserves people to be pledging loyalty and fighting battles on their behalf?
The Series S works for me. I’m primarily a ps5 gamer but I have a series s to play Xbox exclusives I want to play. It didn’t cost me a whole lot but I wouldn’t have considered a series x worth the cost. Ergo: I’m totally ok with accepting compromises.
I wonder how many others use series s for that purpose and not as their primary platform…
@TheCollector316 No, I don't mind Push Square themselves making Xbox articles, but I am tired of people making the same comments about Xbox.
This should have been the norm from the beginning. The S was never going to be able to achieve true parity with the X and it appears that the S has series issues with split screen, Halo Infinite, Baldur's Gate 3, and Forza all have dropped the feature, with 2 of those games coming from Xbox first party studios. The problem is, now MS appears to have lied when they said the S would have feature parity with the X. This is the right decision to get Baldur's Gate 3 to more gamers, but it's a very bad look for MS.
Saw the tittle and the first idea in my mind was "Yeah Sammy boy wrote this he loves to write about xbox in the ps site" and I was right 😂😂.
I just find funny how some people said PS5 was "stopping the generation" for not being as "powerful" as Series X (I guess they didn't believe the same about Xbox One lol) and it's actually the series S the one is putting limits on developers.
@LightningLeader
All games can be enjoyed by everyone, nobody is stopping anyone from owning all the consoles and buying all the games.
I will not complain that I cannot play Starfield on my Playstation as I am able to go out, by an Xbox and the game, hook it up to one of the many open ports on my TV, and play the game.
I WILL say that if Starfield was on the Playstation 5 only it would be in 60FPS and the character models would not look like potatoes.
@Michael2008ish I think the PlayStation move was a smarter the same specs but lose the disc tray.
@Al3 The steam deck verified version doesn't have split screen enabled and in order to run it you need to trick it into using the non verified version. Reports are that it doesn't run very well if you do this so no, it doesn't handle it.
It’s an admission of failure. The S was such a bad call.
@HotGoomba
We have nothing else...so...JUST LET US LIVE!!!
Arguing about what console is best is the same as supporting a sports team. We pick one and then defend it to the bitter end. Fans be fans can't change that.
@Michael2008ish It a great console for teenagers, or kids that feel they’ve “outgrown” Nintendo.
@UltimateOtaku91
Actually that is incorrect.
The game runs at 30fps because its coding is twenty levels of awful.
Digital Foundry confirmed this by testing the PC version. The game runs all out on a single thread core with 99% utilization. The other CPU cores are basically idling. And all of these consoles and modern PC CPUs have at minimum 8 core CPUs.
That’s a super inefficient way to program a game. That dude was being stupid.
@UltimateOtaku91 Funny part about that. Is the guy who commented wasn’t even apart of the studio who made Gotham knights. He apart of Rocksteady… So he had no room to talk about development issues for Gotham Knights, and is more or less speaking out his butt.
gamepass day 1? i will try it out on my s and buy it on my 5 because im sure the s will have to make concessions in the graphics department as well piss poor system the s is imo only a gamepass machine
If I’d purchased an S based on the promise of feature parity alone, I’d obviously be disappointed with this outcome. With that said, one has to be wary of such a promise at such a reduced price and this outcome seemed pretty inevitable.
Go to pure Xbox & read the comments to this news. Its the polar opposite, they all seem happy, & not once do the comments rip into Playstation or its users. It's like going from a room full of sugared up children (here), to adults actually discussing games. It's lovely.
I know this may seem like an odd comparison but i'm seeing this generation of consoles like i see graphics cards. You have the all singing,dancing cards (ps5,xbox series x) and then the low to mid range cards (switch,series s) which whilst good just lack the features of the premium ones. It would be nice for everybody to have the same experiences but sometimes there has to be a compromise and those with the less powerful gpu's will lose out.
@General_Disarray is it any different then a low powered pc playing games at a low setting?
@Ichiban whats wrong with people being happy they get to play a game they like?
@Michael2008ish kids really good for younger children who mostly just play game pass
@UltimateOtaku91 Bethesda have gone into great length explaining why it's 30fps if it was just on the ps5 it would also be 30fps
@Deljo so happy I picked one up. I’ve never owned any xbox but decided to try out gamepass after my ps+ expired and it was absolutely worth it. Not worried at all about it running Starfield either. Great little second room option for gaming and streaming.
@NoToSheep I understand this is a PS blog but the hate towards Xbox and every other platform that is not PS is getting absurd.
I see this as he actively looking out to have more games in the Xbox ecosystem therefore pleasing Xbox gamers and I can only WISH and dream for Jim Ryan to care the same way about PS gamers.
I remember Shawn Layden and Jack Tretton used to do the same thing to bring some acclaimed games to PS3/PS4, just remember that E3 2010 when they got Gabe Newell to announce Portal on PS3 (after being very harsh on the platform) and NO ONE ever said they were “desperate”, they were looking out for PS customers in a way Jim Ryan has never done once, and yet many of you choose to criticize Phil Spencer…
@Al3 But there's no couch co-op in the steam deck version either.
So basically Phil lied again and now they've even made the video where they made those promises private. 🤣 The S is a potato lol, even mag from Cult Eastwood's channel called it one and he gets paid to shill for Xbox.
@Sil_Am because console wars ***** is terrible and only really fought by the publishers. Gamers just want to enjoy games.
@Al3 but Zelda looked nothing like most Sony games, so?
Good glad it's going to xbox, its a cheap shot to suggest ps5 was getting an exclusive, because of the limitations of series s.
Phil Spencer though talks alot of rubbish half the time.
His speech on why half gen updates aren't good, is utter rubbish, he has literally done that to his own brand by releasing an under powered next gen console, along side a beefier next gen console.
At least both ps5 SKUs are the same except without a disc drive.
So playstation will have a console which matches the series X and then if they do release a pro version, the lowest dominator will still be on par with series X before the release of the next 2 main line consoles come out.
I wouldn't say series S is a bad thing but the whole parity guidelines is definitely holding series X back and its probably why we are seeing some games being put on last gen consoles aswel, because third party developers have to make a game work for the series S, so they are half way there anyway
@HotGoomba I am happy for Xbox users. On th other hand I dont think that Xbox itself should get any love for pulling those %@$# stunts by buying any company at any price just to Ef Sony over. And knowing they got multiple times the spending power makes me scared,scared for a barren games landscape ruled more by dollars than any time, up till now. Money grabbing,bullying behaviour thats what it is.
Happy for Xbox mains (S or X) that a GOTY contender is coming to their platforms without further delay, by dropping a relatively niche feature. A minor compromise imho.
My personal choice is going to be to stream Starfield through my Samsung TV for the cost of a month's worth of Game Pass. With that choice I accept a compromise in quality versus even the S, never mind the X. That's the cool thing about Xbox for me as a PS5/Switch player, I don't even own one of their machines and I get to access the latest Bethesda title anyway, for a small fee. And if I enjoy it enough maybe I'll take that partial step-up and buy the bargain S for future exclusives. That's exactly what MS were aiming for as they seek to claw back market share after last gen, and I'm cool with that.
Oh and the outrage and the flaming and the fanboying in the comments so far... seriously, siding with corporations is so weird. It's like listening to those 'my dad is bigger than your dad' arguments from my playground days. Just play whatever the best games out there for you are, and have fun people. Life's too short.
@MikeOrator Uh,maybe their financial situation is stopping families from buying any and every console on the market to play any and all games. Maybe that's something to think about. Not everyone is flush with cash. So there's at least one reason why.
@Sil_Am Its not the xbox owners that did all that though, we are all gamers.And everyone should play this game.So this is win for everyone (except series s owners that are really upset about the missing splitscreen co-op)
@Sil_Am This!
Removed - flaming/arguing
I own Xbox Series X.
I bought it on one of these "24 month ultimate gaming pass" bundles where you get the console and pass for a monthly fee.
It ended 2 months ago.
I have not renewed the pass, as I think in total I have used it 8 times - and that was to play Forza, which is on PC as well.
Its not a great system - constant crashes, the DVD player wont play most of my 4K discs due to an FPS bug, and the menu is a mess.
The PS5 however has been used daily since I was lucky enough to get it on launch day. Its a far superior product all round.
@Sil_Am I am a PS only player.. i wish Starfiled was on PS5 but its not. Ill probably pick up a Series x at somepoint and play them then.The console wars stuff is just ridiculous.
@Al3 It handles it at the screen resolution of the Steam Deck though. Which is akin to 720P, and UP TO 60FPS.
720p is not acceptable on a Series S is it?
@Michael2008ish i guess its for cassual gamers who just want to play games with out really caring about certain aspects a typical person would look for. they just want to play certain games and not spend a lot of money on it. so i don't really blame them. also its a good console for younger kids as well.
Xbox Series S (the S stands for Sucks)
@Fill3rup_ I had every Playstation and now PS5 - I too was looking forward to Starfield. I will NEVER buy an Xbox for starfield - that only encourages them to do it more
@Sil_Am there is no difference. If Sony had the money MS has they would do the samething. Both companies are out to make as much money as possible anyway they can. You can easily play Starfield without getting a Xbox or a PC. It can be streamed. Streaming is much better than what it was a couple years ago.
The Series S is a good console. Best bang for your buck of any console out there. They removed co-op from the game, the base game is still the same nothing else has changed. I have a Series X and one of my kids has a series S the games look very good. For 200 bucks you get your monies worth.
@Constable_What @Razzamican no it isn't. Games are 1080p or 1440p.
@Razzamican you don't need a Xbox to play Starfield. You can play it on PC or stream it on various devices.
@Palleon I have never had a problem with my Series X or my PS5 and both are day 1 consoles. I do play the Series X much more. After playing Horizon Forbidden West I haven't even turned on my PS5.
@BleedingDreamer Reread my comment. I said that STEAM DECK is around 720p (1200 x 800), and I asked if that's acceptable for Series S.
Unless you're saying that Steam Deck is 1080p or 1440p which is an outright lie.
@Constable_What I thought you were asking about what the Series S can do.
@BleedingDreamer No. I was responding to a comment about how Steam Deck can handle BG3, so the Series S should be able to handle it too. But the Steam Deck runs BG3 at 720p, and that's obviously not acceptable on Series S.
Hilarious this is
@Brydontk It always was
@ironcrow86 PS5 digital exactly same as disc version. Just no disk drive.
I see very few people talking about the can of worms they just opened. I'm reeal curious how this gets handled going forward. Will they finally leave the S behind where it belongs? Will they allow every dev to cut features or only give certain devs special treatment, alienating the rest? This will be something the pops up in the near future no doubt. Also... all this talk about holding things back. At this point, its actually PCs holding development design back the most. Due to consoles all having SSDs now, devs have to account for old HDDs that are only on PCs now which creates a massive gap in possible memory speed. We won't see any true leaps in the design itself until those shackles have finally rusted away. Rest assured we'll be squeezing through crawl spaces and crevasses to the next area for years to come.
@BleedingDreamer I have a 2012 Mac mini - not good for gaming. Regardless even if I had a PC to handle Starfield I won't reward Microsoft monopoly moves. If they did a timed exclusive like Sony did with Deathloop ok that's fine. But a keep of Playstation forever. Nope.
@ironcrow86 LOL because there a ZERO compromises on the PS5 Digital it's exactly the same specs and power. It's a perfect solution for a gamer like myself that downloads all my games. I don't buy physical discs so they let me save the cost. 🤷♂️ - ONE AND ONLY diff is it can't load a physical game - which I don't do so. get it now
@Razzamican such nonsense.Sony has moneyhatted games for ages. Take off the tinted glasses.
At this point in the generation I’m quite frankly sick of major AAA titles releasing on old hardware.
It means we get watered down games for the current gen consoles. Maybe a bit of fancy lighting or a smoother frame rate at most.
This practice only happened for about 6 months in the transition between PS3 and PS4.
It just comes across as greedy and consumer unfriendly.
@Ardat-Yakshi
That's like you saying everyone should be able to drive a Porche and then complain when they are too expensive. Not everyone can afford all the games but everybody CAN play all the games if they can afford them.
What do you want "The People's Video Game Player" and then be issued "The People's Adventure Game", "The People's First Person Shooter" or "Online Multiplayer Game for Proletariats"
Actually, Comrade, that sounds pretty good. Gamers UNITE!!!
@cburg Please show me an example of a game in development for both Playstation AND Xbox that Sony bought the company and told them to end xbox version? I'll wait. Ironically not too long ago Microsoft was Crying thar Sony didn't allow cross play on Call of Duty and Fortnite.
Out of curiosity what's the most recent game you got on Amazon of £10? Or give me a couple examples
I pay $99/yr for Playstation Plus Extra 3 games every month to keep as long as member, and HUNDREDS of others. So if you spend $10/per game you'll have 10 games after you spent $100 - I have about 450 games to choose from - I like it.
@Terra_Custodes Nothing wrong with your way. PS5 is my 1st digital only. You may wish to try out Playstation Extra for 1 month $14.99 to test it. By the $100/yr(only $8.33mo) - I think it's a great value. If you're already Playstation Plus essential Sub be on look out sometimes Sony has upgrade to extra discount deals.
And as for "old fashioned" - I'm 52yrs old myself my 1st game was literally Pong! 🤷♂️🤣😉
PS - I got Cyberpunk 2077 launch lol - it got hate, but I enjoyed it just fine on my PS5. I might play it again - since I think they updated it a bunch since day 1. ✌️
