No, that’s not an Onion headline! The word doing the rounds on social media is that Hollywood superstars Tom Holland and Chris Pratt have been targeted to star in a Jak & Daxter movie. According to a renowned Marvel tipster, Holland will play Jak and Pratt will play his boisterous weasel-like side-kick Daxter – although it feels like it should be the other way around to us!
Obviously, nothing is confirmed here, and we wouldn’t be surprised if this turned out to be an elaborate hoax – or, at best, crossed wires. We know Sony has been incredibly eager to adapt its franchises to film and television, however, and it seems no series is out of bounds – take the recent Twisted Metal show as an example.
Let’s just entertain the idea that this is legitimate for a few minutes: how do you feel about it? Do you think a Holland and Pratt double-act could do justice to Jak & Daxter, and is this even a franchise that deserves a movie to begin with? We like the PS2-era Naughty Dog platformers, but personally we’ve always felt they’re best left to history – this isn’t going to be a Super Mario-esque Box Office banger, is it?

I bet it's real but will never go anywhere and will be stuck in development hell for years.
I will believe it literally the day it's in theaters/vod, is an actual finished thing you can pay to see, and not a second sooner.
The voice of Mario in a PS movie? Bring it !
@Powerplay94 Onward was actually one of Disney's better movies of late and it actually has a good score on RT. Disney just threw it under the bus promotion wise because it's nothing to sell a bunch of merch over.
Jak and daxter has a fun setting that could provide a fun movie when done right, so I don't get the instant dismissal of the idea, but Sony should still focus on getting ghost of Tsushima and metal gear on the big screen, the latter being in supposed pre production for decades.
If true, a new J&D game might be the unknown project Insomniac is working on
Well, Holland already stated he wanted to make a 'darker version' of Jak & Daxter and the director of the Uncharted movie said he was working on a Jak & Daxter movie for Sony.
Doesn't seem to be a joke.
Not totally related, but Neill Blomkamp pretty much confirmed he's working a Wipeout movie as well.
@Powerplay94 The movie was performing well until covid hit. It was one of the first movies that was affected.
Sony, if you're trying to nab a Mario movie cast member, at least get the other Mario brother, Charlie Day to play Daxter! He's way more fitting vocally.
Or as Daxter is going to be CG animated, just use the original voice actor...?
James Arnold Taylor and David Kaye kept their roles as R&C in the movie.
@Perryg92 unfortunately, no matter how good a voice actor is, the masses care about A-list actors, hence why studios almost always choose them over much better ones.
@Perryg92 imagine Charlie Day as Daxter, and Danny DeVito as an older, beaten down Jak - it would be life-changing!
This seems a very normal 2023 occurrence.
@naruball @Powerplay94 @tameshiyaku Definitely true that Onward was closer to being a success that people realize. It’s one of the better recent Disney films. The company’s sort of been on a downward slope financially though, so a lot of people like to point to Onward rather than the fact that other factors played into that rather than that film being the start of it. Crazy to think that Disney has lost $1bil so far this year in film production costs.
Honestly I could be fine with the casting, but Ruben Fleischer, ugh.
@BeerIsAwesome Just ended actually.
Well Jax doesn’t talk in the best Jak & Daxter game so Tom Holland must have just been chosen for Jak for his boyish good looks.😂
J & D is my all time favorite game, and only platinum, but even I don’t think anyone needs this. Certainly not live action. I can kind of see 2 & 2 1/2 working as 1 movie though, as I’ve just finished watching Arcane and Cyberpunk so the setting for those 2 games seems right for the times.
Has to be better than Jason Momoa’s & Keanu Reeve’s “Bad Batch”. I can’t believe I watched that entire movie without turning it off. 😝
Twisted Metal and now Jak & Daxter? What is up with Sony creating movies/TV shows for dormant game franchises but still leaving it dormant on the games front.
Mostly want to add to the Onward love. I thought it was a great, A-tier Pixar movie (Luca too from the Covid era). Would recommend it to anyone who generally likes Disney.
As for the movie, weird casting but they're the most bankable stars in Hollywood right now so it'd almost certainly be a hit.
I’m still hoping for Banjo-Kazooie starring John Goodman and Rachel Dratch
They had a great dynamic in Onward. If this is true, I’ll be looking forward to J&D
Get it videogame accurate. Daxter was the mouth and Jak was the silent muscle. So I’m game for one of these lunkheads to just grunt through a movie.
I'm ok with anyone voicing any character as long as I can't tell it's x actor. And in most cases with well known, you can tell. They don't even try to change their voice. It breaks immersion and I hate it, but most don't seem to mind it, so I don't see it ever changing.
Using the same "hot right now" actors over and over is so tiring. Hollywood suits are so predictable.
I'd rather have a new Jak and Daxter game honestly.
@tofuman86 It's a me, Daxter!
This sounds like a total ***** post. Sony Pictures moment.
@Grumblevolcano Plus Gravity Rush and apparently maybe Wipeout too. Give it time and we'll be seeing Sony Pictures Animation pumping out Ape Escape, Parappa the Rapper and MediEvil films.
