Sony has announced in its fiscal year 2023 Q1 results that another 3.3 million PS5 consoles were shipped in the three months leading up to 30th June 2023, bringing the total to 41.7 million. The firm revealed two weeks ago the current-gen box had sold 40 million units, meaning this latest statistic represents a 1.7 million increase in reported numbers.
For the entirety of the current fiscal year, Sony has set itself a target of 25 million PS5 system shipments, which would represent the highest ever for any PlayStation console in history. It hopes to do so with the help of Marvel's Spider-Man 2, which has a limited edition PS5 bundle planned for release next month. Other first-party titles for the coming months like Helldivers 2 should contribute a little also.
More stats shared in Sony's Q1 results include its count of the monthly active users on PSN remains steady at 108 million, and that 72 per cent of the 56.5 million PS5, PS4 games sold during that quarter were for the digital version.

They’ll probably hit the projected 25mill for the FY.
They have the current price drop in place to phase out the old PS5 models, then Spidey 2 hits followed by the revised PS5 model & holiday season.
They can just coast all the way to the bank.
I just want Spidey 2 out. Not because I’m super excited for it, but I just want to see what the First Party’s have been up to.
Which is why I just do not believe that the Activision Blizzard deal is going to matter. They would be fools to miss out on the bulk of the market.
The most I see is some timed exclusives. Nothing more.
Where did you get PSPlus subscriber numbers? In Supplemental Information, they disclosed them only for FY22.
40m is sell through to customers, as of the second week in July.
41.7M is shipped, as of the end of June(FY Q1 End Date)
@LifeGirl it'd matter if MS took big games like CoD away from PlayStation but they not going that route. I see it as a way to add very large value to Gamepass. I don't see how it will be sustainable but all those Activision games launching day 1 on Gamepass is probably their end goal
@Loamy There’s almost no digital only games that count towards this number. It doesn’t include any of the free to play games.
@ChrisDeku but it does include the mass of games what are cheap or in the digital sales.I bet when you look at the breakdown of big full price games digital to physical is more like 50/50
I feel like Sony's play here, and the current sale back this up, is to aggressively increase the install base so that they minimize the impact MS can make through their Activision Blizzard merger.
If Sony gets people to jump on board till the end of the year, ain't nobody switching to a Series console THIS generation. What Sony's plan for PS6 and onward is, I'm not sure (might not be a factor at all, given changes in user habits that might occur in next 4-5 years).
@KaijuKaiser you are assuming PS6 (and that whole gen) will be backward compatible, which was historically never a given. I do believe this time around though, Sony would push that card way harder than MS (basically not sure what worth BC Redfall would bring ).
@ROTTIEMAN16 I believe the disparity in price difference between an average digital and physical purchase is a little under £10 in the UK for 2022. So physical games do tend to be bough at a higher price still, but its something like £38 vs. £30 so not as large as some might expect.
Of course you do need to account for the fact that about 30% of physical sales price goes to the retailer and therefore digital games make more money, even at a lower average sales price.
@Sifi This gen has barely got underway yet lol
@KaijuKaiser I'm in that boat too. The PS4 gen was the one to win for me in this regard.
PS3/360 gen was great. I had small digital libraries on both systems. But PS4 was when I really got stuck in to my PS Plus library and buying various expansions, dlc etc from the store.
I'm always open to playing on more platforms of course (I love my Switch and I'll jump on to my Series X whenever Fable happens), but I'll never leave PSN behind at this point.
This is the ps4 gen all over again the haters don’t want to believe it. I think Microsoft could buy the whole gaming industry and they will still lose to Sony 😂 lol.
Spider man 2 bring it bloody on insomniac!!!
@Cikajovazmaj Definitely. The recent price drop is about increasing the userbase fast. Maybe it’s a reaction to the FXVI sales and it needs to ensure Spider-Man 2’s release maximises units sold.
@Cikajovazmaj
Playstation usually have backwards compatible with previous gen.
Only ps4 to ps3 hasnt been.
Yet people think Sony hate backwards compatible but they have done it more then competition has.
Just bought a 3rd console at the price drop. Absolutely love this machine! Currently playing ESO, Fallen Order, and Diablo IV.
@Neverwild Well, apart from the initial fat PS3s with the Emotion Engine chip on board, PS3s aren't backwards compatible with the PS2.
So 41.7 million units shipped, of which 40 million (or so) have been sold. By Dec 2017, the PS4 had shifted almost 76 million units so the PS5 is going to have to go some to keep up those kind of sales figures but a cheaper SKU might add some momentum.
My guess is that it'll achieve a similar number to the PS4. Hopefully we won't get the 10th gen until late 2028
@sanderson72
They started it atleast but since cost was high and hardly anyone played older games they took it away on newer models.
But no one can say Sony doesnt do backwards compatible because they generally do.
To think they have managed these numbers without having many PS5 only games is wild.
Returnal
Ratchet and Clank
Final Fantasy 16
Demon Souls
@Neverwild Absolutely, and it definitely gives the new console a leg up if its predecessor was successful.
I don't think the PS5 is capable of emulating the PS3's wacky internals so we won't see that added as a b/c option. Still confused why the PS1 and PS2 weren't included on PS4s never mind 5s, unless it was down to the lack of a CD laser.
@Sifi No idea why you come here to throw shade every day. Seriously, what do you get from it?
As for your point, its a point of view so you are welcome to it. But as someone who uses all the current systems, PS has had more compelling titles to justify this gen compared with xbox to this point. As usual, ninty just doing ninty things 😀
As a point of agreement I can agree that more titles pushing this gens top machines would certainly be welcome..
Playstation is unstoppable.
And we haven't gotten to its second phase yet.
I wonder if Spider-Man 2 is the Swan Song of the first phase or the Kick off for the second phase.
Very exciting times ahead.
N.i.c.e. PlayStation domination.word up son
@Neverwild
They killed PS2 disc BC on the PS3 mid gen. At the time it felt very much like a money grab, forcing people to buy a digital download instead of/as well/as a cheap pre owned copy.
@Netret0120 Returnal and Ratchet and Clank are both on PC now. There probably won't be any PS5 exclusives in a year or so.
@GeeForce It was to cut costs - including the Emotion Engine chip in every box was a costly exercise and was losing PS money on every console sold.
I bought my 60GB unit from local Game store for £350 just after Sony announced that the b/c 60GB was discontinued - following week, they had none left, only the cheaper in every way non-b/c 40GB.
@sanderson72
It was disabled.
The PS3 slim had the ability to read PS2 discs and run PS2 games despite the official line. It was discovered and unlocked late in the cycle by a hacker and enabled for CFW. I tested it, popped in PS2 Outrun 2006 disc, ripped it to the internal HD and it ran perfectly.
Edited (for clarity)
@Jamesblob but until they do that it won't be sustainable. So far they haven't been able to pull the masses with Bethesda (I really think Starfield will change that), they're not making the biggest Activision-Blizzard games exclusive, so no pull there.
Until they start making all their games exclusive which will be the better part of a decade, its hard to say that just releasing day 1 first party games on Gamepass will make it sustainable for them.
And unless they literally do what you say, buy EA, SE, CDPR, From Soft, buy everyone, then yes, (1) being locked in to play top quality exclusive games (2) that are day 1 (3) without paying £70 per game will definitely make GP more than sustainable. Those 3 factors will bring the masses over and kill the competition. PS are only winning big because they have consistent high quality major exclusives, which MS seem to fumble time and time again.
Otherwise, nope. People will not jump onto GP and it won't be sustainable
@GeeForce I am going to need to be provided a link for this please, first I've heard of it
@GeeForce PS3 Slim can definitely read PS2 discs, it just doesn't know what to do with them and puts up an apologetic message saying that it can't run PS2 games.
I'm fairly sure that the Emotion Engine chip was removed from the fat 40GB onwards and that was the reason why it couldn't play them. Was it a software fix in the homebrew?
Get that money I want sales numbers on all things spiderman related from the game to the console to the plates and controller 😤
