Take-Two Interactive is a publishing parent company on a monolithic scale, with assets in excess of $15 billion USD. It owns two major publishing labels itself, Rockstar Games and 2K, and brought in a net income (after covering all operating expenses) of more than $1 billion in 2023 alone. It should come as no surprise, then, that the company is insisting that slapping a $50/£40 price tag on Red Dead Redemption's PS4 port is "commercially accurate".
For a straight port, not a remaster, did we mention that? No enhancements outside of text in additional languages (which, you know, is something). No 60 frames-per-second upgrade, enhanced assets, or resolution boost, nada, as far as we can tell. These kinds of things have largely become expected for re-releases in this day and age, and fans and players aren't having any of it.
Speaking to IGN, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick minced no words, declaring: "That's just what we believe is the commercially accurate price for it."

It's a bold strategy, but the depressing truth is that people will likely buy it at that price point regardless; such is the power of nostalgia and the mastery and allure of Rockstar Games. We take some comfort in the timing of this announcement, which just shows how entirely out of touch the powers that be are with the current sentiment of players on the ground.
How many times have we bleated about Baldur's Gate 3 in the past week alone (6, and many more guides), about the records it's breaking on both PC and on PS5, how it's already reckoned one of the best games ever made? You could pick it up for just $10 more on PS5, which demonstrates the preposterousness of Mr Zelnick's statement (and you'd be supporting an independent studio in the process).
These are obviously very different games, appealing to different audiences, but asking so much for such a bland port of Red Dead Redemption is insulting, and the fans that have been clamouring for so long deserve better.
Will you be picking up the Red Dead port on PS4? No judgement here, we all do what we must, but we'd be fascinated to hear the reasoning. Let us know in the comments section below.

Well, it's not an "either or" to buy BG3 or this, but the only people I see this making sense for are people who ONLY have a Switch or a PS4 to game on. Nobody else has a sane reason to buy this port.
I mean what do you expect from a company who owns 2K. I installed the Plus offering of Tiger woods and within five minutes of navigating the home screen I’m taken to two different pages offering in game gear for money. I hadn’t even hit an actual golf ball! (Uninstalled the game fyi) So you can guarantee that when GTA 6 arrives you’re going to be inundated with offers to buy trivial crap from the Rockstar store more so than V. They should be in the same bracket as EA, Activision and the many many crooks on the mobile stores. People give them a pass because they just want GTA6
@tselliot
Yeah, $50 for this or, if somebody has the option, less money for the Xbox 360 version that has One X enhancements and still features online. Seems like an easy choice.
They are mental.
@tselliot, yeah I did note that, meant it more as a way of demonstrating what a similar dollar amount gets you currently. But I completely agree haha
That price is commercially criminal.
I hope no one buys it, so the price drops to its more accurate pricing.
Seeing that the ps4 announcement trailer is clearly running well above the sub 720p that the ps3 ran at the no resolution boost claim is suspect
We’ll see how it performs commercially.
So glad they made the choice of whether or not to buy Red Dead easy for me 🤣.
It's commercially accurate as it is cheaper than the proper remaster they will sell you in 2-3 years.
I might have to wait for a native PS5 version in 10 years down the line from now.
Someone sounds completely out of touch. Greedy a-hole.
“commercially accurate” is the marketing department version of “alternative facts”.😂
The commercially accurate price should be no more than $20, which is then brought down to $15 during PSN sales.
It’s incredibly lazy on Take Two’s part but we should probably remember that Double Eleven are only performing the task that they’ve been given and the ‘lazy devs’ narrative 99% of the time means ‘lazy executives’.
Considering I got the Xbox version for around 10 several years ago, can’t see anything accurate about this.
As much as it might hurt to hear it...he isn't wrong. I guarantee it's going to be a top seller of the PSN when it comes out. They are going to make a nice profit.
Yes well by the time you add the "Switch release" tax & possibly need to factor in the Rockstar intern contractors needing to do the post release patches like for GTA Trilogy remastered "definitive edition",the price rip-off makes perfect sense!🤔😂
After all this is the same Strauss Zelnik that insisted the GTA Trilogy had a minor hiccup at launch but was perfectly fine after the initial patch update on that disaster & Rockstar claiming to have no idea that it was in such a state & had been "below expectations for such a beloved franchise"....,so beloved Take-two farmed it off to Grove Street Games!🙄
I'm actually obliterated by the fact they thought it was a good idea to re-release this without a 60fps update or a resolution boost, etc. I feel like this further damages their reputation, but they won't care when GTA6 comes out and gets a 98 on metacritic and makes them $6 billion.
I would consider anything over $30 a poor deal for a port this old, $50 is outrageous.
My excitement for GTA6 has been waning in recent years as the true Rockstar have revealed themselves.
Sad thing, the casual market is going to see the R* logo buy this game and this is going to sell. Then this goober publisher is going to say “it’s what the people wanted”
This Strauss Zelnick guy is fast becoming the new Bobby Kotick. Charging $50 for this lazy port is absolutely absurd!
Not even closely accurate 🤣
Or maybe the CEO meant "comically" accurate, which makes more sense 😆
This is almost as bad as the Nintendo way of thinking. They can charge whatever they want, knowing people will buy it anyway, just because the Rockstar logo is on the cover.
Can we please make this moron eat his words?
Another test "How stupid gamers are?"
By “commercially accurate” they do not mean a fair price, they mean it’s what enough people are willing to pay that to price it lower would not increase sales enough to offset the lower income per unit. Sadly, despite what all of us more informed gamers bleating on here say, they are probably right.
Lol we are doomed in the long term if they think that’s acceptable
Sad thing is it will probably still do well
I know this sounds bad… but I hope it flops, and HARD. They need a reality check.
It should be accurate for people to clean their PS3 consoles and buy second hand copies of RDR.
That would surely bring another record breaking commercial success following the masterful release of GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition. Bootleg copies of Thrill Kill on PS1 are more definitive than that.
"That's just the price we assume a big number of people will be dumb enough to pay."
There, euphemisms out. As the article suggests, he's probably not wrong either. I'd absolutely love him to be, though.
£20 and I might have bitten, through gritted teeth.
£40...no way Jose.
It just goes to show how morally bankrupt he is. I am guessing it was his idea to put slot machines and casinos in NBA 2k a few years ago. All he cares about is money and will exploit anyone to get it. But there will be enough gullable and more money then sense people that will buy it at the price quoted.
Hahahaha isn’t every rippoff ‘commercially accurate’?
"Commercially accurate" is a strange response. I was fully expecting "gamers are too entitled"
Whilst i hope this flops as its clearly a cynical move by take2, the fact is, it won't. First time on switch will encourage people to buy it. And dropping a physical release close to Christmas will see big sales from well meaning family members etc as gifts. I'm sure there will also be people who justify the purchase as they will argue it is no longer 'locked to PS3'. Fact is, the backwards compatible Xbox version is the best, and most cost-effective way to play this game. Heck, you could probably buy a PS3 and a copy of RDR for less than the cost of entry here.
Am i going to buy it? No, despite absolutely loving this game. This is a greedy move. How much say does Rockstar have in this? I don't know anymore - but what i do know is that i've lost alot of faith in Rockstar games over the past decade and i won't be buying GTA6 untill i have seen clear evidence that the single player experience lives up to the standards i expect from them. If it turns out the experience is a throwaway secondary thought to the new version of GTA Online, i won't be getting it.
Commercially a rip
We're lucky we got even this.🤦 geez could of been locked into GTA online or something rockstar has been changed for the worse by 2k.
Absolutely absurd move.
First GTA definitive edition and now this. The success of GTA 5 made them greedy and lazy.
Sad.
This had TakeTwo written all over it and not Rockstar.
Compared to Baldurs Gate, I'd assume that RDR with the Undead Nightmare DLC competes 'very' well in terms of Content, Story and hours and hours worth of gaming time.
The difference is that BG3 was created much more recently and has obviously a better graphical presentation - but that doesn't necessarily make it a 'better' game. That's like saying 'Cats' is a better Movie than Citizen Kane because its more modern and in colour too.
If you want to play RDR on these Platforms, then you either pay the price, wait for sales or miss out...
Won't matter a jot, they will still make their money.. the bigger surprise would be if it actually flopped, but highly doubtful..
I mean, there are too many players who have never played it, only heard or watched it, so they are all-in already I would imagine, sold on the idea of playing a classic, which also it seems, includes it's "classic" state of visuals and control systems.
Does sum up the state of play for gaming at the moment and the relationship between companies and players. The levels of disdain each has for the other has rarely been higher.
@BusyOlf
Thank you for this! ***** Take Two and GTA! They are as bad as Activision! If only GTA 6 was a failure... :/
@dellyrascal Yeah, we often forget, as regular visitors here, that we are in the minority of the user base and most simply won't know or understand that this is a blatant cash grab, isn't enhanced etc.
They'll just see the marketing, see RDR for PS4 on the ads and go and buy. Ker-ching for Rockstar, as if they need more of that.
I'm sure the beancounters are right. They release it on switch and ps4, anyone born mid-00's can finally play it. Anyone wanting to replay it can wait for the sale. I'm guessing it'll be 29.99 after the holidays for a limited time. I'm happy they put it out, even if it was the bare minimum effort to port. We need to keep games available.
Nah, I’m alright 😂
Ahh yes, the same Zelnick who said they're not seeing any "pushback" from consumers on $70 games, directly followed by what they are seeing is consumers buying less $70 games. 🙄
.....
This dude is either an idiot or just totally out of touch.
Diggin' the hole even deeper. What a bunch of crooks. Guess it fits right in with characters from all of their games.
@nessisonett You cant blame these guys for anything but man even the 60 FPS alone and does it have a resolution upgrade?
YouTube showed a lot of people defending this already don't worry its going to be a succes.
Not getting a penny off me for that.
He's also super biased because he also said backwards compatibility isn't necessarily and than rereleases a ps3 game for $50 with almost no improvements
It’ll be a “Commercial Flop” that’s for sure
@Drago201 This dude is just a corrupted ass. He doesn't want bc because he wants a reason to resell games every gen just like this.
Full price for a last gen remaster 1/2 way through this gen is beyond insulting. Gives me bad vibes that GTA6 is gonna suck
Obviously they just decided to rip off the fans.
The sad reality is gamers have shown they don't care about these practices so although we on here may be outraged, I fully expect this port to sell well on PS4/5 and especially Nintendo Switch.
Gamers tolerated GTA 5 on PS4 and then tolerated Shark Cards and then tolerated GTA 5 now PS5 and now GTA Plus and it still continues to sell like hotcakes.
He is laughing at us because he knows once the rage passes, it will still bring in many more millions.
@IndoorEnthusiast Why would they use the PS3 version as the basis for a port when the X360 version is the prettier, was made for hardware architecture most similar to the PC version that is used on today's consoles?
The much better RDR2 cost $20 or less. Who will pay 150% more for an older game that many of us already have in PS3? I love RDR but will rather play my PS3 copy, and for those that have a PS3 it is possible to find a fine copy for $10-15.
Well, keep buying rehash and publishers will keep going for the easy cash
People on Switch pay top dollar for ports that are worse than the PS4 original. So if an actual "direct port" would be an upgrade for what the system usually gets.
I mean it's a great game that still holds up well against most modern day releases, I honestly don't think any new player would complain with paying £40 for a large and well developed game. Obviously if you have played it like most of us echo chamberlords then it isn't worth it. It will sell well.
I for one never finished RDR so I may get it. There will be a signifcant number of younger players who are now old enough to play/understand the game.
@Darylb88 yeah OK, but those new/ younger players could also experience the game properly upgraded if this wasn’t just a simple port.
@BeenGamingSince_83 I did presume they would use the rdr2 map and tech to speed up a remake but looks like they are focusing their dev teams on GTA. I guess we'll all see if there is any upscaling tech which has been used on Xbox to good effect.
