According to newly registered ESRB ratings, it looks like Falcom's excellent JRPGs, Trails of Cold Steel 3 and Trails of Cold Steel 4, are coming to PS5. The two sequels, which released on western PS4s in 2019 and 2020 respectively, are published by NIS America outside of Japan — and we all know how much that company loves its PS5 ports.
NISA previously launched PS5 versions of Ys 8: Lacrimosa of Dana and Ys 9: Monstrum Nox, but neither title boasts an upgrade path from their PS4 editions. As such, we expect Cold Steel 3 and 4 to be full price re-releases. What's more, the turn-based adventures already run at 60 frames-per-second — much like the aforementioned Ys games — on Sony's last-gen console, and are obviously perfectly playable on PS5 via backwards compatibility, so we're left wondering what these ports will actually improve.
Would you buy Cold Steel 3 and 4 again? Or maybe you'd be playing them for the first time on PS5? Prepare some link attacks in the comments section below.

Isn’t directing you to buy the full price version of a PlayStation store an upgrade path? It just isn’t a discount.
If they both came one-disc physical version with all the DLC and a nice steel book I’d probably be in.
No upgrade path just like greedy Atlus means a hard pass
"so we're left wondering what these ports will actually improve."
I know this one! NISA financial situation, of course.
Trails or Cold Steel 1 and 2 still have western Publishing rights with Xseed/Marvelous. So those 2 probably wont get an PS5 Port. TocS 2 really needs it because this Game has an Game Breaking bug when played on PS5
I'll pass since I'm happy with the PS4 versions anyway. But hey if this exposes more people to the greatness that is Trails then go for it NISA.
NISA's PS5 ports feel pointless to me but in a way some are nice because it makes some of these games easier to get, Ys 9 for example I had difficulty finding last year on PS4 so it's nice in the physical side of things. But outside that seems a bit pointless since the games run well on PS4 already
@MagisterMagi That f***ing bug made me lose over 3 hours of progress. Had no idea about the softlock on PS5s until it happened to me.
NISA should fix Trails Into Reverie before churning out pointless PS5-ports.
I was pretty neutral when they took over FALCOM's distribution from XSEED, because I wanted to give them a chance to prove they could do better.
Sadly, Trails Into Reverie is a mess, even 2 months after release and there's no patch in sight either.
As a Trails fan, I obviously love the game, but NISA got about 5% (!!) of all tooltips wrong, with bad grammar, spelling mistakes, missing words and swapped dialog boxes between characters to boot.
The people at XSEED worked their butts off to deliver high quality localizations and did a great job with Cold Steel 1 & 2.
NISA's IDGAF-attitude sucks for all FALCOM fans, but at least we got Zero and Azure out of it.
@Pat_trick Not even that imho. These are niche games. Of all the recent PS5 re-releases NISA did, probably the YS games are the only ones wich are better known.
Anyway, I'm glad they re-released YS 8 & 9, Caligula Effect 1 & 2, and now seemingly Trails of Cold Stell 3 & 4 for the PS5.
@Gryzor I Would imagine that's because of the insane output of the last few years. How many games did they localize? Probably 15 to 20. They're rushing them, and still have a big backlog
I don't really need this, I want trails in the sky to come to modern consoles first. They're locked on PC only and I don't have any means to play them!
@nessisonett Read you can prevent this one by using fast forward in the Cutscene lol
@MagisterMagi Yep, that’s how I managed to get past it the second time around.
@nessisonett But yeah, this shouldn't be on marked as "backwards compatible" at all on PS5. YS IX had a nasty bug on PS5 at first too but NISA patched it quickly. Xseed/Marvelous dont care tho
Of course this is happening when I have literally just bought ToCS 3 on ps4. But I'm not too bothered this time round as I also bought the YS Dana and Monstrum Nox PS5 versions and there's not a lot of difference to warrant paying £50 again.
@Niktaw Yes, steelbook always a nice addition
All this while the main story of Kuro 2 is almost 100% fan translated.
Hmmm, since I love their games I'll probably buy them, if only to support the studio, even if the method's shady. I wonder what their selling point will be. The games were already feature complete
I think these are just to have falcom developers practice ps5 development and make a buck.
Hopefully these will have at least PC level features like increased draw distance etc. otherwise I already own on PS4.
I honestly would buy this just because it’s impossible to find these games without seeing an $100+ price tag on them from some scumbag on the internet if there’s a physical form for these games. Otherwise I see no reason anyone would buy these unless you’re a big fan and want all versions
Nope. I have ToCS 1-4 on my PS5 but I am switching new Trails purchases (Reverie, Kuro no Kiseki) to the Steam PH3 releases on my Steam Deck. My new PS5 purchases will primarily be for first party games, couch multiplayer, Ps+ offerings and Trails games are pretty ideal for portable mode.
