Project Mugen is an upcoming gacha game developed by Naked Rain. In a new "disclosure of production information" trailer, we looked at the next monstrous timesink gunning for Genshin Impact's crown.
The team at Naked Rain utilise technology that procedurally generates city environments, allowing for the development of a massive urban sprawl. Mobility and freedom are core tenets of Mugen's design ethos, and traversal looks incredible, with movements like swinging, grappling, swimming, riding, and driving all part of a single intuitive system.

Indoor areas are seamlessly integrated into the open world, and players can utilise (or vandalise) almost any object encountered. There's no release date on this one yet, but judging by what's already been shown, whenever this does, it's gonna hit big.
What do you think of Project Mugen? Are you as hooked on gacha games as Push Square Editor Sammy Barker? Put in some work in the comments section below.

So anime Spiderman?
I like how they talk about pre-established game mechanics like they've just invented the wheel.
I have no issue really with live service/gacha games whatsoever, but I've always found it weird how some people can play the same game...forever, I guess?😅 This ain't a dig at anyone obviously but I don't know how one can play the same game for like 2 decades straight. I've always been keen on checking out Genshin or Destiny 2, but it's all just daunting. Serious question for some people actually, do playing these games eventually feel like a routine and you just play because it eventually becomes a commitment, or are you actually liking the game? Dumb question I know, but I have some friends that play FFXIV all the time, and at times it feels like the only ever game they play😂,always keeping up to date with all the expansions and updates. They say it's fun and I really wanna try it out but I just don't know if I can put 7 million hours in one game when I can put 7 million hours across several games from several genres instead.
I honestly have no idea what this comment even is.
Free to play games I play one already and don't have more time to spend on them. I don't want to have a second job.
A procedurally generated slot machine. Gaming at its finest…
@homelesscretin obviously can't answer for everyone who plays stuff like Genshin, but I treat it like a gap filler game in-between big releases or as a palette cleanser. For example I just finished Starfield, sunk 150hrs into it and next up on deck is Baldur's Gate 3... but before I dive into another massive game I'm going to spend a week with Genshin doing the MSQ that I've fallen behind on, I probably won't get anywhere near the end of the current update but I'll knock out a satisfying chunk and move on.
FFXIV on the other hand is my 'forever game', although at the moment I log on in the evening for an hour to get dailies done and more importantly talk to my best mate and a few others on Discord. But around major updates it takes up more time and expansions get the no-life treatment from both of us.
I get how some people see these games as becoming more of a commitment than something fun to play but for me it's either purely for fun as well as a way to keep in touch with friends who aren't easy to see often irl.
My advice for jumping into something like Genshin is do it in chunks and don't worry about the idea of fully catching up. The game's main quest is broken up into very clear quest-lines so it'll be obvious what's a good stopping point when you want to crack on with something else.
@Mintie That sounds like a solid plan but the problem is already play one free to play game. And yes these games take up time you need to do your daily stuff with all these games.
@homelesscretin I totally get what you mean. I grew up on World of Warcraft but could never play it like my friends did. Some of them have played almost non stop since the game released and raid most weeks and I just don’t get how they do it. I just get bored too quickly. Even if the game has content to do I just struggle to stick at it, once it feels like a job I lose the desire to play pretty quick.
I really got into Genshin a while back but after a month or two it just felt like a bit of a hollow experience designed to get you opening wishes for characters. A lot of the story missions felt like filler and I didn’t like that there were so many barriers to getting the character builds I wanted. I found myself just logging on to kill some bosses and then coming off again. Genshin isn’t a bad game by any stretch but it just couldn’t really hold my attention like it seems to a lot of others.
I would have loved to get into Destiny 2 as I loved Halo back in the day but I don’t agree with Bungie vaulting content.
Doesn't matter how good it is. I'm not playing gacha.
@Icey664
Was hyped for this until I saw the genre. Why can’t they make a normal single player narrative game with this aesthetic, traversal, environment, and with more Yakuza type vibe and stories/quests?
@thefourfoldroot1 Because shareholders like money and they probably wouldn't have greenlit this if they did not forecast some insane returns. Even Sony who are known for amazing single player games are investing in 10 live service games.
For some reason I was a little bothered by the fact that the technical director and game designer didn't share their names in the video.
NetEase had them in anycase; Zane Zhang (tech director) & Hannah Yin (game designer).
On-topic game looks good as always, like most 'good-looking' live-service/gacha games do, but thats not saying much imo.
I switch off when I see the word Gacha.
@homelesscretin for me, those live service/forever games are to fill my time with purely gameplay session with nothing else in it (story, exploration, art etc). For a long time it was DotA for me, now it is Overwatch. Those games are mostly the same every match, so my focus is in improving gameplay and having fun only. Whereas with story driven SP games, sometimes I can be overwhelmed with the story (in a good way) and just don't prefer longplay session advancing the story.
I always have one live service game to play at a time, and then 2-3 story-driven SP games to go with it. For me they are very different experiences and one does not hinder/oppose each other.
@Flaming_Kaiser with Genshin specifically I kinda stopped caring about the dailies - I do them when I know I'm going to be on it for a while but otherwise I concentrate on the actual quests, but yeah if you feel the need to do them they gobble up empty hours if you try to keep up with more than one game.
@Mintie I can understand that people like them don't get me wrong I just dispice them I have one Gems of War that one alone is job for me and the problem im a completionist.....
The damn daily stuff, timed stuff, special troops and so on its killing me slowly. And the worst thing with these free to play games I see that they would be so much better without all this nonsense.
My best example is Fallout Shelter so much but without the free to play stuff it wouldhave been so much better.
