While his name is still present throughout the game, Hideo Kojima has been removed from the credits of the upcoming Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol 1, which launches later this week on PS5 and PS4. New wrappers for the games simply thank “all Metal Gear staff and fans”, and don’t individually reference each contributing employee. Of course, the original credits are still included in the games themselves, where the veteran’s name remains.
Konami would probably argue that, as Kojima didn’t work on this specific compilation, he doesn’t need to be credited in the new wrapper. However, the games naturally wouldn’t exist without his original creative vision.
Of course, it’s no secret the auteur and Konami have a strained relationship these days, following his very public departure from the Japanese publisher almost a decade ago. Kojima has since gone on to form his own studio, which most recently released Death Stranding, and is currently creating a sequel for the PS5. We’re going to assume we’ll be seeing more of that game before the end of the year, because it’s been quite some time since its debut trailer.

Konami being Konami 🙄
This is wrong. The actual games themselves, when booted up, still credit the original team that made the games AND the HD remasters from Bluepoint.
But the Master Collection's credits won't list Kojima as he wasn't involved in making this specific collection. He wasn't involved in making the digital books, the UI/menu, etc...
He is still credited in the actual games themselves, including the opening and end credits for the actual games.
I love most of your writings here at Push Square, but I don't like misleading clickbait.
@Hydra_Spectre Maybe read the article: "Of course, the original credits are still included in the games themselves."
@get2sammyb Yeah. But the title is still clickbait/ragebait.
And it seems that they are getting angry at seeing Kojima not credited, when he wasn't involved in the actual porting process and curation of this collection.
What Konami did here is still better than what Square Enix did for the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters, which outright removed the credits for the original creators. Which is especially egregious in FF5 and FF6.
@TrickyDicky99 What do you mean?
@get2sammyb https://www.reddit.com/r/GamingLeaksAndRumours/comments/17eb5ps/david_jaffesad_frustrating_potentially_super/
@Hydra_Spectre You summed up my thoughts perfectly. I hate clickbait articles like this.
Wrapper? Like physical wrapper, or UI at the start screen? Is that a wrapper? I think I'm probably just tired, but mega I'm confused as to what that means. I'm assuming it's the UI that "wraps" every game together, I don't have a copy so I'm just assuming. Lol
I guess it's petty, but everyone is still credited in each game, so...idk doesn't seem like too big a deal. It is pretty petty, but also...it's so petty that I both don't really care, and think it's kinda funny they'd do this little thing just to slight Kojima.
I personally am thinking they're just not wanting to record a whole ass other video for credits. As anyone that has worked on them can tell you...it's actually not that simple to get credits up and running, it's an actual video file they put in the game most of the time, and it's kind of a pain to re-record, and who knows if their names are still the same? People could have gotten married, divorced, just changed their name.
I bet it's more to do with "laziness" than maliciousness.
@MagisterMagi
It’s not gaming news. It’s just speculation about the industry that happens multiple times a day. 99% of the time is false.
@Yaycandy no, its about an prominent individual leaving SIE/PS
@Hydra_Spectre Agree, it's the usual headline to get some people's biases immediately reaffirmed, the rest of the article gives enough insight then to make a reasonable conclusion.
@MagisterMagi
If they are so prominent, then who is it? As usual a guy has the info and wants you to buy into his podcast to find out. It’s a rhetorical question as no one has the answer as to the time of this comment. Might as well post about a Switch 2 announcement speculation.
@Yaycandy Imho Cory Barlog. He has been quiet for months and its not known what he has done the past 4ish years. Really only him and Druckmann would be News worthy Imho
I heard you're a real dope wrapper!
Not sure this is such a big deal or even noteworthy, to be honest. The article admits the original credits are all left intact. Anyone playing the games is still going to see Kojima's name appear on screen plenty of times.
Kojima was in the credits so many times in Metal Gear Solid V that it probably balances out.
Horrible attempt at clickbait.
They didn't include Kojima's name in a collection he did not work on!?!?!? WTF!!!!!! 🤬🤬🤬
(He's still credited within the actual games). Yeah, yeah, you put that detail in the article, but headlines and tweets are all people need to get baited, and you left that out there. Of course, there would be no need for an article either if you did include that clarification in the headline, because there is nothing newsworthy in this.
@MagisterMagi Cory is working on a game separate from God of War.
Neil is working on TLOU Part 3 and Season 2 of HBO show.
Doubt its them two but we shall see.
@get2sammyb what @Hydra_Spectre said was spot on tbf.
The headline and sub head (usually filled by a pun) are very much clickbait.
And the line you quoted in response was 8 lines into the article and after an advert.
This type of stuff is usually reserved for dying sites like IGN, not sites that are actually good and of worth to us like PushSquare
If his name is still in the original credits for the games themselves I think that's enough personally. If they went in and removed his name in the individual credits then that would be a different story.
I don't get what the issue here is. Everyone that worked in the original versions is credited. Everyone that has not worked in the ports is not credited. Why it should be any different?
@get2sammyb I have to agree with other comments. Your articles are great but this title is just a nasty clickbait. Still looking forward to whatever you'll write next.
@get2sammyb
Have to agree with people here, I do enjoy your writing almost all the time, but this title is clickbaity and the actual article isn't really relevant anyway.
HK is credited in the games he was involved in, not the porting process, extras etc involved in this package. So what?
Considering what a lazy slipshod pointless set of ports this is (and even the term port is to be used loosely due to MGS1 being a PS1 emulator in a wrapper), in a year where we've already had several similarly lazy phoned in efforts like Red Dead Redemption, I'm sure Kojima is glad that his name isn't attached to it. This sort of crap would never pass his own quality standards because he respects his fans a lot more and wouldn't do this to them.
Maybe change it to wrapper instead of credits in the article title. It's the truth and i'd still click on it. No need to trick me push square.
Konami having a tantrum and spitting their dummy out!
And people say the fallout between Konami and Kojima has been repaired. (It hasn't) they could have atleast given an honourable mention but this pettiness proves it. I doubt he cares though now having his own studio and free to work on whatever he wants.
No matter what, you can't deny that the article is the typical internet clickbait where the article's headline is misleading and you get the real story in the actual article. I'm not trying to stir up anything at all, but there's no way around it. He's not missing from the credits of the games, but everybody could take it that way based on the headline and sub-head.
You could say it's the internet being the internet, but at least admit it when you do it. We're not going to all of a sudden stop going here. It's just so blatantly obvious that trying to deny it or defend it just makes things worse, @get2sammyb.
Kojima-san could make a Metal Gear successor without using the IP if he wanted to. But he is working on DS2. I wasn't planning on buying Metal Gear because of that. They believe that using the IP alone would sell. Konami burned that bridge and probably would not work with them.
@get2sammyb it's a click bait headline. The headline states Kojima is missing from the credits when he technically isn't. The headline is worded the way it is to make people click on it thinking Kojima was omitted from the original credits.
@get2sammyb The headline is still clickbait, regardless. This was low lmao
To be fair, MGS 1-4 was before Kojima started having his name all over during the game so it's not too big of a change in my eyes. He's still credited in the credits like everyone else that worked on the original releases.
Other thing is, Konami owns the MGS IP, not Kojima so it makes sense to not have "A Hideo Kojima Game" on the box or start menus. But that's just my opinion on it.
A foreword from Kojima would have been nice
Konami burying the hatchet and moving on.
It’s been confirmed this refers to the wrapper the games are being contained in, the games’ credits remain as they were in tact
Y'know, I'm so phuqing tired of clicking on articles on here that turn out to be either clickbait or absolute non-issues. This one encompasses both.
Later, Push Square.
Completely pointless article. He's in the credits for the games because he was involved with them. He's not in the credits for this compilation because he wasn't involved with it.
Sorry to pile on, but the majority of commenters are correct here, Push Square staff. This headline was very misleading. I assumed it meant Konami had literally removed his name from each game's credits. It didn't, and it has no obligation at all to name him in the collection's credits since, you know, he had nothing to do with making it.
The way Konami has treated Kojima-san and many of its properties over the last decade-plus is deplorable, but this isn't a case of anything nearly as egregious as it's been made out to be here.
So my take-away is that some guy got credit for the stuff he should be credited for, but didn’t get credit for the bits he wasn’t involved in?!?
I’m outraged that I don’t appear in the credits, as I too had nothing to do with it. Outraged, I tell you!
Dear push square staff,
As you can see by pretty much every comment here, we're tired of clickbait headlines. Please consider doing better.
Regards,
The push square community
@get2sammyb can you not change the headline or is it too late now. Maybe it's a higher ups decision to keep the click bait headline.
C’mon I thought y’all are better than this. This is such a non-story.
Good thing the OPENING SCENE of EVERY GAME says:
'A Hideo Kojima Game'.
And/Or
Kojima Productions.
Dear Push Square,
You do you. Nowhere in the title of the article did it read "Kojima stripped of his credit on the Metal Gear Solid Collection." Maybe people need to start reading headlines with a little less personal bias toward negativity and only consider the words presented.
Of course, it's konami after all 😕
