Persona developer P-Studio's exciting fantasy offering, Metaphor: ReFantazio, is due in Fall 2024, inevitably causing fans of Atlus's all-consuming RPGs to retreat from society. The publisher has revealed some slick screenshots (thanks, Gematsu) and shed further light on the world in which the game takes place.
With a narrative and setting sure to resonate, ReFantazio tells a "mysterious and exciting story unfolding in a world where people must fight their own anxiety". It takes place in a medieval European-inspired fantasy setting that mirrors a contemporary backdrop set in the real world. A non-silent protagonist embarks on a journey to protect their kingdom, forging alliances with companions and characters encountered along the way to become more powerful and overcome obstacles. That sure sounds like Persona to us!
ReFantazio has an elite team of developers helming the project, directed by Katsura Hashino, with characters designed by Shigenori Soejima and music composed by Shoji Meguro. Each S-Rank artist is responsible for games like Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne, Persona 3, Persona 4, and Persona 5.
In an intriguing twist, ReFantazio will feature both turn-based and action combat. Perhaps taking some inspiration from Persona 5 Strikers, weaker enemies can be slashed through, with more harrowing encounters requiring a turn-based touch. Initiating combat can be done through action combat, allowing players to keep the element of surprise.
What do you think of Metaphor: ReFantazio? Are you excited to see something other than Persona out of P-Studio? Let us know in the comments section below.

I have been looking intensely at all those pictures and I feel like my appreciation of video game arts has improved
I never got around to trying Persona, but this looks unmissable.
I was mildly interested, but the game awards trailer plus the info from last night sold me on it.
You had me “[ridiculous game name]” - but looks and sounds like it’ll be great!
Why did they have to include a carbon copy of the Persona 3 protagonist... facepalm
I really dislike the teal/fuchsia clash they have going on with the menus, personally. I think it makes them confusing and muddled to look at.
The game itself looks extremely pretty, though. hopefully the gameplay and story hold up too.
Im glad that theyre learning more from p5 and keeping the menus stylish looking
As they release more and more information and screenshots, I'm more and more interested.
More so for the visuals and designs, rather than the narrative/setting, which really doesn't do much for me (looks and sounds like medieval Persona).
I hope it delivers.
Those menus are intense! a bit busy, but stylish.
got me intrigued
I'm genuinely interested in this.
It's really atractive art and design. I will play it in the future!!
"Perhaps taking some inspiration from Persona 5 Strikers"
My memory must be failing me, because I don't remember any turn-based combat at all in Strikers
@Shepherd_Tallon in the meantime, I highly recommend Persona. Especially 5 Royal. It was the biggest pleasant surprise for me of any game I played in 2023.
@Texus I really need to play it, I know. I think I even have it on PSN or PS Plus, I just have no time to play it.
I’ll wait for a review as it looks too similar to the Persona games, which I love but don’t want a copy of
Looks slick but maybe I should wait for Metaphor: ReFantazio Royal. Don't want to double dip
The art is wonderful! The fact that this is not using the usual SMT combat makes me look forward to it even more
@Shepherd_Tallon Definitely play Persona 5 Royal or better yet. Wait for Persona 3 Reload in Feb and work your way up from there.
The 2nd trailer reignited my hype for this game but I'm not a fan of the J-Pop Idol costume design tbh.
@Shepherd_Tallon and the playtime on it is no joke. Looong game. But very little sag or need to grind hard.
