Straight off the back of the new trailer for Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero, Bandai Namco has seemingly confirmed that the game will feature a whopping 164 playable character forms. We write 'seemingly' because the number itself hasn't actually been mentioned — but an official screenshot on the publisher's website shows what appears to be a character select screen, and there are a total of 164 panels (yes, we did count them).
Most of the panels are blank right now, but 24 of them are taken up by Goku and Vegeta, in all of their various powered-up forms. Other obvious combatants like Krillin, Piccolo, Yamcha, Cell, Trunks, Majin Buu, and Broly are also included.
Ever since it was announced last year, fans have been expecting Sparking! Zero to feature a massive roster. That's because it's a successor to the Budokai Tenkaichi games, which were known for their huge playable character lists. The last release to bear the name, Budokai Tenkaichi 3, had 161 character forms (with 98 individual characters) — so it looks like Sparking! Zero is going to beat the previous record.
Would you be happy with that many playable character forms? Tell us all about your favourite Goku in the comments section below.

this same thing is what made DBFZ become stale so quick . it was just goku fighter Z or saiyan fighter Z
All I wanted from this release was for it to top Tenkaichi 3's roster size not counting any potential DLC additions. I'm concerned no longer, this game looks beautiful!
DBZ fans wax lyrical about the Budokai games, what was it that made them favourites?
@AdamNovice Increasingly huge character rosters with each entry, incredible callbacks/attention to detail with cinematic super attacks along with local multiplayer matches that made for endless hours of fun.
Misread this as 16 playable character forms because it's very in line with current fighters which made the subtitle just slightly outrageous lol
Wow, that's a lot of characters!
No Ultra Instinct?
Man, I would love to see Moro and Black Freeza in this game. Ultra Instinct Goku, Ultra Ego Vegeta, and Beast Gohan are either in this or we’ve got some obvious DLC (at least for two of them). It’s crazy. I think I grow more fondness for Dragon Ball the longer it goes on, even when I disagree with the direction it takes from time to time.
In the original Budokai Tenkaichi 3 most of the characters are just re-skins especially when it comes to the huge characters. That never mattered to me though, I must've sat there and played thousands of hours of this game. The game isn't that complicated but it used to be the ultimate "who would win in a fight in dbz" game. Loved playing as Pan and Master Roshi.
Sometimes less is better but not in this case, give me that giant roster like Tenkaichi 3! I hope they include a good amount of characters from the original Dragon Ball too🤞
There's more there gt versions and dragon_ball goku
This trailer made me so happy.
The characters, the transformations, the speed, the crisp art direction and the stages. Everything is looking so so good.
It's been a long wait but hopefully not much longer.
@get2sammyb A lot that will have to be reskins over the same moveset for most characters. Something like this would take way longer to have more than 100+ characters.
I'm skeptical about this being the player select screen of the final game. It's clunky and not user friendly at all.
And even if it was, no way these pics would be the portraits used to select your character : too many different poses and zoom levels.
It's most probably just some character examples distributed in a way to represent a roster screen.
Hopefully the number 164 is right though, but let's wait for a confirmation.
Man, I really hope you can hide characters you don't use. I don't wanna search around for 10 minutes everytime I wanna use a specific character xD
@nomither6 the problem with that was Fighterz had a much smaller roster and there were characters who could've been chosen instead of yet another goku and vegeta. Multiple versions of a character are fine here since there will be a huge selection to choose from
@AdamNovice the tenkaichi games were pretty much the definitive dragon ball games. Almost every character that threw a punch was playable, had the best combat mechanics in any arena fighter, had the large arenas to freely fly around in and destroy, etc etc. It's very exciting to see that series return on much more powerful hardware on a much larger scale
@AdamNovice You could have several mid-match transformations for some characters, for example, biding your time to build ki and take Goku all the way from regular, through each stage, all the way to super saiyan 4- or just blast up to full ki and transform from 1 to 4 at once. Had different skills and moves available at different stages, and some of these would turn a vs match into a frantic button guessing minigame (rock, paper, scissors to lay on another attack/ defend). Full control to fly up or around in the arena, dodge/ teleport away from attacks and reposition, etc. So many characters...
I could go on!
