Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, Ubisoft's imminent action platformer, will see the return of the titular Prince in an all-new adventure, the first since 2010's The Forgotten Sands. Forgoing 3D, this more traditional style will hearken to the series' roots, taking inspiration from Persian mythology and adding a darker twist.
Combat looks to be a fairly frenetic affair, running at a blistering 120fps in 4K on PS5, keeping the time manipulation and action-based gameplay at the fore. Boss encounters look suitably climactic, seemingly influenced by the raft of excellent 2D action games released in the intervening years, including the inevitable melding of Souls-Like and Metroidvania. Ubisoft certainly has a looker on its hands, and Prince of Persia could be poised for a comeback. We don't have too much longer to wait either, as The Prince returns to PS5 and PS4 on 18th January.

Are you looking forward to Prince of Persia: The Last Crown? Can you believe it's been that long already? Turn back the clock in the comments section below.

It’s running at 120fps because it looks like a PS3 game..like some super low-budget game that’s low risk for the developers.
Loved the original. Sad to see it’s come to this….
Hopefully the sales are good, which would warrant a true sequel to Forgotten Sands.
It looks excellent. It'll be the first game i purchase this year!
Oh dang I'm all over this.
It looks okay to me - the original Prince of Persia used the best graphics possible at the time, so it's nice that this new one isn't going down the nostalgic 'pixel art' route, which to me often comes across as a lazy cop-out.
My favourite so far has been The Sands Of Time and the series hasn't managed to match my expectations since. This one doesn't really look to be changing that, but I'm willing to keep an open mind.
@UpperEchelon84 I mean, yeah it does but, so what? Not everything has to look like Cyberpunk; they're probably using this game to test the waters. PoP isn't the franchise it used to be in terms of popularity. It's a polished looking Metroidvania and is as close to the original game as you're gonna get.
If this goes down well, maybe we'll get a fully-fledged AAA PoP game in the near future. Also it's only £35!
Gonna be a day one buy for me!
Looks great. I'll check out the demo first but I expect to be way into this.
I wasn’t at all excited for this after the first trailer, but I’ll admit it has definitely gained my interest. Hell, I’ll buy it just to support Ubi in showing them we want more than just the same rehashed open world games over and over. Child of Light was one of my favorite games last generation but now they rarely do anything different these days.
For me " The Sands of Time " is an excellent 3rd person game. This looks like a backwards step. Just my opinion of course. 😁😁
If I like the demo, this may well be the first new game I purchase this year. I… uh… purchased Guitar Hero 3 for my 360 as my actual first game this year, but it was also $0, so not sure that counts as “purchasing” either? Man, did not expect my mind to devolve into “what really is purchasing, anyway?” while I started my comment, but here we are. Anyway, could be the first new game I get. Or Tekken if I don’t like it.
Prince of Persia: Souls-like before Souls-like as a thing
Any idea about the price yet? This shouldn't be more than €40.
I stayed away from news about this game for a long time, and just based on this trailer : I'm not into the design. This faux-low poly design does feel like a cop out : not really retro, but not the high quality expected in 2024. The animations look ok though.
And damn that prince design is bad... Ubisoft really need to relearn how to make likeable characters. The last I can remember was Kassandra from AC Odyssey, and this was more than 5 years ago. (a small honorable mention to Fenyx in Immortals Fenyx Rising though...)
@Gabrielmpf Apparently, it's 50€/$ or 45£.
60€/$ or 50£ for the Deluxe Edition.
I'm excited. It looks a little inspired by Metroid Dread in the combat and visuals and I absolutely loved that game.
@Olmaz Thanks. A bit pricey. I guess it will depend on how long it is to beat. Will probably wait for a price drop.
I'll buy this day one.
I was never a huge fan of the previous PoP formula of the last 15 years or so. I do, however, like platformers with metroidvania aspects. So I couldn't care less about the complaints really.
I don't like the looks of the protagonist. But I'll be able to live with that.
@UpperEchelon84
It looks great. It's a side scroller and looks fine from the side...
what else do you want in terms of graphics?
Underwhelming visuals aside, this looks like the first Ubisoft game in years I’ve had any interest in. Will probably buy it!
Also relieved they replaced the trash hip hop music from the reveal trailer with a decent soundtrack that makes sense for this game.
@UpperEchelon84 you loved the original but is sad to see the game that returns to the roots of the original… alright then
The more I see, the more I like. Won't be a day one for me, but I've got my eye on it.
@UpperEchelon84 speak for yourself. I think it looks dope and I'm excited to play it
I think this is going to score higher with critics and players than expected.
