Mojang has announced that action strategy spin-off Minecraft Legends will receive no further updates, meaning there won't be any new content, Lost Legends, or Marketplace DLC coming to the game. It's a surprising announcement, considering the game only launched in April of last year. Minecraft itself remains the best-selling video game of all time, with more than 300 million copies sold, so you'd think there would be more interest.
The Minecraft maker revealed the news in a development update: "Since launch, we've listened to community feedback and implemented a series of changes and tweaks to improve the game. With that complete, we will take a step back from development."
Minecraft Legends wasn't a bad game; we just found it to be a bit shallow and repetitive, which is a problem that could have been solved. To its credit, along with Blackbird Interactive, Mojang implemented various updates in the interim, from gameplay tweaks to a more comprehensive Battle View UI. Lost Legends added a monthly challenge (the final one is Snow vs. Snouts).
Perhaps with some more meaningful content support, this particular experiment may have continued. Multiplayer will remain online for the foreseeable future, and as a parting gift, all players have been entrusted with the Bright-Eyed Hero skin pictured above.
What do you think of Minecraft Legends, and how much support should primarily single-player games get post-launch? Construct a thesis in the comments section below.

Not every game needs constant updates. I don't understand the negativity about a game being finished with development a year after launch. This mindset facilitates unfinished games at launch.
@Blaze215 Like I said over on PX:
I didn't even know this game was meant to be a GaaS. I just figured it was a strategy game in the Minecraft universe with a single player campaign and multiplayer option in the same vein as like Starcraft or something. 🤷♂️
@GamingFan4Lyf ya that's what I gathered it was too. I guess the triple A industry has conditioned us to always expect an incomplete game at launch which will always need future updates
@Blaze215 "I guess the triple A industry has conditioned us to always expect an incomplete game at launch which will always need future updates"
It has nothing to do with the game or games being incomplete. Games pricing has gotten ridiculous along with living cost. People are expecting vastly more value per dollar. Your average gamer can't afford to drop $70 on one and done games anymore. When people can only realistically buy 1-2 games a year. You want the games you buy to have update to bring more content and features.
@GamingFan4Lyf I don't know how you didn't realize this was a supposed to a GAAS. Microsoft in general has been pushing GAAS. Dungeon and vanilla minecraft are GAAS. It would be expected that this was also a GAAS.
@AverageGamer let's be real I think most people can afford more than 1-2 games a year especially if you get them on a sale. It has everything to do with games launching incomplete, the safety net of future updates has made studios complacent.
@AverageGamer I know nothing about Dungeons only that it exists and was a Diablo-style game with Minecraft setting. Has it been getting content updates for years? I have no idea.
I also know nothing about Legends other than it exists and is an RTS with Minecraft setting.
Just because Minecraft has had ongoing support doesn’t mean every spin-off has to be supported until the end of time. For all I know both Dungeons and Legends had “end of life” plans.
