Those currently enduring or plotting a playthrough of Naughty Dog's grim epic on PS5 have been given some hope. The developer has shared vital information on how The Last of Us Part II Remastered upgrade will work for veteran players looking to do it all over again.
The developer posted an update on Twitter detailing the required actions, depending on format preference. Digital players are straightforward: provided you own the base game, head to the PS Store on 19th January and put down the £8 / $10 required (prices may vary by country), and you are good to go.
Owners of the PS4 disc will need to insert it into their PS5 to download and play the digital version. It really should go without saying, but you will need a disc drive to do so. In a response, Naughty Dog confirmed save games will indeed carry over to Remastered, which is a nice addition.
In addition to the base game, the roguelike No Return mode will be exciting to fans of the game's brutal combat. Will you be making the upgrade? Let us know in the comments section below.

I would have passed at full price, but I'm willing to upgrade for $10. No Return mode sounds fun.
Easiest $10 I'll ever spend.
Played this when it was in the ps+ catalogue (EDIT: LAPSUS. I meant "ps now" (back in october 2021)). Eh, it was alredy fine. I don't care about some maybe dlc worthy addons and the story is not worth replaying. I wish these dudes and dudettes at ND would actually get a chance to create something else than uncharted and TLOU.
Saves transfer over? I wonder if that means trophy autopop lol.
@TheDudeElDuderino i'm pretty sure thats one of the games they are currently working on.
Might be finally time to take the cellophane wrapping off that copy of the last of us part 2 I bought 2 years ago
Still think it’s unnecessary and yet another waste of Naughty Dog’s time, but for $10 I’ll give it a try, unlike many I did enjoy Part 2 and its story.
@TheDudeElDuderino TLOU Part 2 has never been part of PS+ catalogue…
I’m rather happy about this cos I do have a copy of the ps4 game on disc and never played it. Consequently I’ll be all over it for £8!
I played the first one and did like it but I’m not as head over heels for Naughty Dog Games as some. For me I play one once in a while, complete it on a middling difficulty and say I’ve seen it and it was nice - yknow.
What if I have the PS4 disk version and I pre ordered the PS5 disk version? How do I transfer everything over?
@TheDudeElDuderino imagine lying so blatantly about playing a game
Great spot @IOI I did wonder myself
@IOI it was on Ps Now , maybe that's what he meant
@IOI @Jacko11 dudes, dudes, I mispoke as it was ps now at the time, but you two are so quick on the trigger. Shame on you. Should have investigated a bit before calling a grown man a liar. Ahh, to be living in the times of the wild west, your destinies would have been sealed. This being modern age, rule of law and all that rubbish, I can just shoot a link to educate you:
https://www.techradar.com/news/the-last-of-us-2-goes-free-on-playstation-now-and-our-minds-are-blown
and yes, it being a ps4 game on ps now meant you could download it and install it locally.
@DragoonZied indeed, partner. You're a good one. I'm too old to care if it's ps now or re-christened ps plus premium, it was all the same to me, a catalogue of ps4 games I could download back in the dark ages of 2021
The visual enhancement might not be much, but $10 for it plus some lost levels, guitar free play, and a new rouge-like mode sounds like a good deal to me.
@IOI I think he is thinking of the original from way back.
@IOI they already said this project was worked by new employees to get them ready for the big projects so don't worry it wasn't a waste of time and is going to generate money for their financial goals
For those that haven’t played this game yet it’s an amazing game and a must have.
For others like me that have played on the PS4 Pro it’s just another reason why this new generation after three years is such a dull slow moving investment in a new console, apart from the very tiny odd exception.
Most games would have sat very well on the PS4 Pro and Xbox one x in the last three years.
@TheDudeElDuderino haha same , I'm old too and I knew they didn't have our sony experience
At £8 i can't complain at all. Won't bother transferring my save though as i plan on replaying it.
@OldGamer999 You say that but last year really felt like a proper start to current gen with many current gen only games being released. Honestly though i feel current gen has been more then just games and is more the tech. Most PS4 games will run and play better on PS5, the short loading times are incredible, the Duel Sense control makes every other controllee boring and there's no way in hell i would want to play Horizon 2 or Ragnarok and such on PS4, you also have the 3D audio as well and 60fps or over being way common.
I will definitely be getting this upgrade and replaying one of the best games ever made, on my PS5, for £8 it's a no brainer.
You folks who still have a copy in the cellophane may as well do this too as you must have more money than sense.
I just hope that Naughty Dog do something similar with the latest TLOU1 upgrade as even a fan like me could not stomach paying £70 for a game I have already bought twice before and have played through about 5 times.

@OldGamer999 totally with you there dude. This gen of consoles has been the slowest to bring the reason to have them to the table (with notable exceptions on both platforms. I don't count Nintendo, they are doing their thing quite well for themselves).
I've added the game to my back log a while ago, have managed to finish the first one not too long ago, so will definitely upgrade it and play after I finish Psychonauts 2
@roylaza general survey I'm doing.... Does backlog mean that you bought it and are yet to play it? Or that you didn't buy it and just decided you would play it at some point? Thank you, hope you enjoy it.
@Starkei Hey Starkei, so I'm frequenting the site psdeals.net which lists games that are currently on discount (I also have specific games on my watch list there) and ever so often I buy a game or two on discount (almost exclusively PS4 games although I have a PS5), so now my library has over 100 games of which I've finished about 30.
I've been out of the PlayStation scene since the PS1 , so when I got a PS5 as a gift it was very cheap for me to buy the now-heavily-discounted PS4 games and experience them for the first time.
Top tier subheader Khay.
@TheDudeElDuderino
Yes Nintendo play their own tune and have their audience and are doing great for themselves with the hybrid method.
Hopefully, but I don’t think we will, we will have some games that scream this is a new generation. Sony have done a little bit.
For £8 it is a no brainer
Guarantee there’s people who have already pre-ordered the ps5 digital edition who already have it on ps4 disc. Not sayng this isn’t a generous and refreshing offer (it is!) but they really should have announced this at the same time they put it up for digital preorder on the ps store
Is the £8 upgrade option for a limited time or will it always be available?

@roylaza oh wow. Got a lot of awesome games to look forward to! Thanks for sharing ☺
@Placidcasual Not sure what you're referring to, but the $/€10 upgrade path from PS4 to PS5 version was part of the original announcement.
@Splat I'm certain Sony would have saved a lot of controversy by just calling it 'Director's Cut'
So it's the exact same way that the uncharted collection worked then.i see 2nd hand shops are putting the price of the PS4 disc version of TLOU2 up.😂🤣
it's strange somehow that you got tlou2 in a sale a year ago or so for 15 bucks or what it was and now just 10 more for the remaster. and part 1 is still 50 in a sale
@BeautifulCreatures Yeah, playing TLOU2 in the thick of lockdown was a strangely cathartic experience!
I'm not sure if I'm gonna revisit either game any time soon, but if they do announce a Part 3, I think I might do a replay of both (and certainly nab the upgrade); it's been a hot minute since I played the first one way back on PS3.
Still have this in my backlog, but will wait and see what Digital Foundry say about the upgrade. Not a huge fan of roguelites, so that’s not enough to justify the upgrade right now.
They needed to clarify that the upgrade path is only going to be available at release, as currently only the full price is displayed on the store. I even installed the game in order to check if the upgrade path is available somewhere in-game, but it's not.
@TechaNinja I hope not. I'd prefer a brand new trophy list.
I haven’t played this and probably won’t be anytime soon with everything coming out in the next 2-3 months but it seems logic they are doing it with how successful part 1 and the tv show have been.
Guys championing Nintendo that gave us reworked WiiU titles at full price for a whole generation but think Sony is evil offering a 10€ upgrade path for this…OK 👌🏻
@Fyz306903 1000% they would have a lot less controversy. I don't see this upgrade any different to the Death Stranding Director's Cut in terms of effort and value
@Ainu20 My bad bro! I totally missed that as part of the initial announcements. Like I said its a generous upgrade offer and now turns out they did do everything right with the initial announcement too anyway, kudos to naughty dog
@Sacrosanctus They've been saying the upgrade would be available "at launch" ever since it was first announced.
@BeautifulCreatures Is Death Stranding decent? I'll be honest, my interest in Kojima's brand of barminess dissipated with each new MGS entry, but I've heard that it's quite a sublime gaming experience.
@BeautifulCreatures Yeah but even walking sims, which may sound dull on paper, given the right atmosphere and direction they can be very absorbing and entertaining in their own way — I tend not to discriminate with genre, as long as they're done well. And yeah, I never finished MGSV — I was pretty much checked out with the series after finishing the Ground Zeroes demo; MGS4 was an absolute slog.
Hoping for a new trophy list!
Stop supporting this awful game with its manly female.
I think updating these great games to current gen is nice but would be much happier with proper DLCs (same for R* games).
