Microsoft has officially confirmed it’ll bring four formerly exclusive games to rival platforms like PS5, but it won’t say which ones. As part of a bizarre podcast featuring executives Phil Spencer, Sarah Bond, and Matt Booty, the trillion-dollar tech titan danced around the rumours which have been doing the rounds for weeks now.
“We're always looking to learn as a leadership team and to grow,” said Spencer. “And we think this is an interesting point in time for us to use what some of the other platforms have right now to help grow our franchises.”
He continued: “I'm not going to name those games. The teams that are building those games have announced plans that are not too far away. As we know, game teams put a lot of energy into their announcements with the partners. So, I don't want to take anything away from those teams. So, I won't be talking about the titles specifically. But I think when they come out, it'll make sense.”
The likelihood is the four games will be Hi-Fi Rush, Pentiment, Grounded, and Sea of Thieves, as per previous rumours. Spencer hinted as much by teasing: “Two of the games are kind of community-driven games that will end up on other platforms and give us the ability to continue to invest in them. Two of the other games are smaller games that were never really meant to be built as kind of platform exclusives and all the fanfare that goes around that.”
Two titles that won’t be included are Starfield and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle – at least not yet. “They are not Starfield or Indiana Jones,” Spencer explained, but in an interview with The Verge he added: “I don’t think we should as an industry ever rule out a game going to any other platform.” Crystal clear communication from the Xbox leadership team, then.
“These are games that originally launched on Xbox,” Spencer continued to The Verge, when asked if more titles could make the jump to PS5. “They were Xbox-branded games and we want to see what happens, because going and doing the development work to bring them to new platforms is real work. We want to make sure that the return makes sense. We want to make sure the audience that’s there has an appetite, maybe they don’t.”
In other words, if you want more Xbox games on your PS5, perhaps you should put your money where your mouth is and pick up this initial batch of four titles. Spoken like a true salesman, we suppose.
Elsewhere, speaking specifically about why it’s bringing games to PS5, Spencer said it’s all about the “long-term health” of the Xbox brand. “We make every decision with the long-term health of Xbox in mind, which means a growing platform, our games performing, building the best platform for creators, reaching as many players as we can,” he said.

So all that hype for nothing…I can’t say I’m surprised.
Based on how they worded it I’d say: Pentiment, Hi-Fi Rush, Sea of Thieves, and Grounded.
This is a massive disappointment - not because of the games, but due to Microsoft’s lack of transparency. This whole situation could have been handled in a tweet. Instead, it was dragged out for way too long all to essentially say nothing of genuine substance.
More non-answers from Fibbin' Phil. Why do people even care what he says? He spins and speaks very vaguely all the time.
It does seem Xbox will start treating other consoles like PlayStation treats PC and not go fully platform agnostic, releasing most titles a year or so later. That's much wiser. Microsoft can keep sustaining the financial hit of Game Pass until they see how adding ABK games can affect subscription numbers. It's obvious they'll still lose tons of money on Games Pass then because there is no way putting Xbox Studios games on platforms they normally would have not launched on would offset ABK and Bethesda game sales cratering on Xbox and any game that would have been multi-platform without Microsoft's meddling.
This is just the start. He won't say it but i bet if these games do well then other games will follow, maybe Gears and Starfield won't come over but i wouldn't rule out Indy or Hellblade 2.
Just tell me when can I play Hi-Fi Rush on my ps5...
All they've done is create more questions than answers.
Seriously why not just name the games lol
That's what they have committed to but it's obvious they've got more they are working on and if these sell well then we will definitely see more.
Anyone who thinks these 4 games we are getting are all we are going to get are in denial. This is just the start, and that's a fact. Once Microsoft see the revenue from playstation players who will be purchasing these games and not renting them like the xbox community does, they will be wanting to put more and more games onto playstation consoles.
Also that podcast was dull as hell, basically they are saying the future is multi plat and their developers want their games to be played by as many people as possible, could have been a tweet or statement and would have had the same impact.
Not the least surprised they said nothing. Glad I didn't watch. If you read between the lines though (as you tend to have to do with Xbox), this is just the start where some (most? all?) software eventually goes multiplat.
This is just the beginning, after testing the waters, they'll see the green roll in and start releasing more.
@Kraven Xbox didn't drag it out. Social media and news sites like this did because it gets them clicks. Businesses rarely react to social media frenzy because why should they?
Gamers always overreact. Don't blame Microsoft for that.
@Cjam36 they have literally said the opposite.
Just a load of words and signifying nothing. Absolute rubbish. I’ll stick with PlayStation I think
This would have been a nothingburger if not for the gross overreaction to false rumors last week.
My guess is Hi Fi Rush, Pentiment, Sea of Thieves, and Grounded. Games that can live comfortably on other platforms and not harm the brand in the slightest.
This is not even new behavior from xbox. They have ported games like Ori and cuphead to other consoles. They have released minecraft legends, minecraft dungeons, quake 1 and 2 reremaster
This is bizarre, honestly. They say it's just four... But then they say maybe it's not... But then they won't say what the four are... But they say it's definitely not Starfield and Indiana Jones... But then they're not ruling anything out.
Some of the worst messaging from a major company I've ever seen.
Doesn't really change much. A few smaller games and older games head to other platforms. It seems all the overreaction for gamers was for nothing, but it isn't a surprise that certain PS fans will do anything to claim Xbox is dead.
Completely expected. These four are laying the groundwork. Once shareholders see the added revenue stream, all Xbox games will become multiplat. My bet is by this time next year, Xbox games will be releasing on all consoles capable of running them. February 15, 2025. The beginning of the end of Xbox as we knew it.
@lightningbolt79 They let it play out for much longer than they should have. This should have been addressed in the first couple of days. That’s just my opinion. You are right, though - gamers do overreact.
This is why I can’t stand Microsoft. Well, to be fair, most large American tech companies. This two faced scripted promotional material that they must not deviate from, while pretending it’s just a casual chat, lol,
As to the message, they left us to read between the lines as always. My takeaway is that they need other platforms to grow and to continue investing in their game franchises, and are dipping their toes in with just 4 titles for now.
Watching this bizarre podcast was a waste of time. We will bring four games but we won't say which. Some others may come in the future or not... Basically, what Microsoft more or less always said in the past.
I'd wager those four games are Hi Fi Rush, Sea of Theieves, Grounded and Hellblade 2.
"No Starfield or Indiana Jones"
Just a reminder, those games were supposed to be multiplatform before Microsoft hoarded them away.
@get2sammyb It really isn't that confusing. At the moment, they can say it is 4, but obviously they don't want to rule anything out because chances are, more games will eventually be realised on other platforms, but for now, it is 4. It isn't difficult to understand.
https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2024/02/15/xbox-promise-bring-more-games-to-more-players/
@UltimateOtaku91 Threw in the towel on xbox last month, I just don't see the return for my investment in a separate ecosystem than the one I prefer. This reads to me as "We aren't giving up, but we are seeking a way out."
Baffling stuff from Xbox. A week's wait just to tell us exactly what we already know without actually telling us what we know.
Blade has to be one, too... Right? For down the line
well, what a load of crap that spewed from that dude's mouth
They did not need to wait a whole week to basically say nothing
What a bunch of emergency PR crap.
Let's be honest. If a game doesn't hit it's ROI, it'll be multiplatform in a year or two.
They can't keep taking losses on games where theres a console with a 55 million instal base of potential sales.
I can almost taste the salt in the air.
@UltimateOtaku91 it'd be interesting if they decide to bring Redfall and then say "well mulitplat isn't desired".
Typical 20 minute word salad to announce Diablo going to Game Pass
Love how they had to say the other console and couldnt even say Playstation.
What a surprise. The comments here twisting everything to "Xbox is dead" and "Microsoft is terrible".
Gamers overreacted before the news was revealed. Now the news is revealed and gamers still have to find reasons why it's terrible, despite it being 4 games currently.
If Sony came out with this exact thing, I bet you'd all be praising them.
And I thought Sony’s communication was weak…
This was a master class on how NOT to squash internet rumors.
It basically indirectly confirmed that anything could be coming to PlayStation and Switch.
What a terrible show!
So much is shrouded in mistery. I won't be able to sleep tonight.
That was such an awful podcast. Should have just made this a tweet or something. RIP to the people who sold their Xboxes over nothing.
I should have expected Xbox to mess this up.
They said an awful lot without really saying anything. Typical M$
Gotta love the non-answers from big wigs lol.
Wow Phil take credit for games they bought. How deluded can he be?
More games to more people so first we buy everything and take it away and then give it back, players will thank us for it.
@get2sammyb That's just typical Phil speech, he basically wants to keep xbox fans happy but also knows he's lying to them so he's trying to carefully pick his words, without realizing he's contradicting himself throughout.
If I was an Xbox fan I'd be furious at the lack of transparency. Phil Spencer couldn't even be bothered to name the 4 games despite it being public knowledge already.
Also 34m GP subs is a pitiful return on the amount of money that they have put into it.
Imagine this was PlayStation saying this, everyone on these comments would be rightly furious.
Lots of people seem unhappy on here. So strange.
Waste of time I don’t care either way but this messaging didn’t need a announcement like this😹
And the crowd goes mild. Won't commit to exclusives, won't commit to giving up, and already teasing their next gen consoles as their current failures rot. The Phil Spencer Experience!
Typical boring Phil Spencer drivel, hyping up a 20-minute podcast that equated to "we better".
Never heard of Grounded, I'd definitely play Hi-Fi Rush though.
This could have been a email.
@UltimateOtaku91 This quote says everything
"We want to make sure that the return makes sense. We want to make sure the audience that’s there has an appetite, maybe they don’t"
If the PS and Switch audiences show Microsoft they are hungry, there will be more. If the sales aren't strong, this will remain an odd experiment.
Host - "What was the criteria for selecting those 4 games?"
Phil - "We looked at games that are over a year old. A couple of the games are community driven games [live service]. Two of the other games are smaller games that were never really meant to be built as platform exclusives but games that our teams really wanted to build and we want to support those creative endeavors."
This should tell us all we need to know about future titles. Live service and small passion projects after 1 year as xbox exclusive.
@Loamy Could be Pentiment but I can't see many playstation gamers being interested in that game due to its niche style, where as Hellblade is also a smaller title but also a game playstation gamers are familiar with due to the first game being on playstation consoles, it would be an easier game to sell to the PlayStation community.
Wtf!! The world is watching and they come out with nothing to see!! This is typical XBOX!
Well if the rumored games are accurate I'm interested in 50% of them, though if i were to play Pentiment, maybe I'd just do so on PC.
Talking out of their asses again. If your'e not ruling it out then this is an obvious test to see how much money they make. If they make a lot, bet your asses Starfield and Indy are going mutiplat.
Microsoft confirming everything at once was nothing more than a wet dream for many people.
Microsoft will NEVER confirm that it will release everything for all platforms, even if that is what will happen. No one would be so stupid to announce this with a clear face with the possibility of the company's shares falling dramatically as a result.
This was an absolute joke and a waste of everyones time. These excecs cannot be taken seriously and they're mocking the intelligence of every player and viewer of this farce!
@lightningbolt79 You must be new here. If Sony released a statement in this vain, they'd be getting torn to shreds even harder.
If you're going to sew Xbox apologia, at least take it to an Xbox website.
All this has done is put pressure on the studios of those 4 games to announce something soon or spend ages getting hounded in their comments by people who want more information
@AdamNovice
GamePass and Activision are two of the reasons Microsoft is forcing Xbox to go multiplat. The slow drip drip drip of Xbox games releasing on PlayStation is going to make the Xbox ingrained go mental!
I have a hard time wrapping my head around a console fanboy getting upset over a game going multi-platform. And yet I have an even harder time imagining a single one of those XBox fanboys being appeased by this statement.
@Enuo I was just going to say the same thing. The community here shreds what PlayStation execs have to say.
So far the comments are mild compared to what they would have been if Ryan or Hulst had pulled the same thing.
So the 4 games are easy to guess in High-fi, SOT, Pentiment, and Grounded. Aka no one played on xbox outside of SOT, live service and games no one wants
Wtf is lies of p is talking about.hes not naming the games also😏.ok.what.word up son
Absolute waste of time that was.
All the people saying its the end of Xbox and they're leaving the hardware market, they're going pure 3rd party, gamepass is dead and all that 😂😂😂😂
Xbox took all that time to say that? Wow.
What that podcast really needed was a few games of charades to liven it up, four games would have been just about right.
@get2sammyb I really don't understand why you’d expect them to put all their cards on the table, and commit to exactly what the deal will be moving forward.
It’s obviously a case of reading between the lines.
I really doubt they could be more definitive even if they wanted to be.
What I got from it is simply that anything and everything is potentially up for review on a case by case basis.
Edit: it does seem strange that they don’t just confirm the 4, though, to avoid further speculation.
Spencer is still trying to play with the xbox users lol. The worst part is I'm sure people still believe in him.
I wasn't expecting anything because if I wanted to play xbox games I would play them on pc but this sure isn't much lol, I'm only interested in Grounded and I hope this erases the argument of sony nor trying anymore because they won.
@BacklogBrad
Sure thing buddy. You conveniently left off:
“I don’t think we should as an industry ever rule out a game going to any other platform.”
There is you “but” that completely negates every quote you posted.
@TheCollector316 the money gamepass is making I don't think Microsoft are taking much if any of a hit
Yeah, that really was strange. Can’t shake the feeling that this was initially meant to be something different than what it ended up being. Probably the most bizarre bit to me is when Mr. Spencer went off about how much Xbox has grown and how important growth is to then point out how the industry has not grown, basically painting out the fact that they have been buying up the industry, confirming that’s their strategy going forward while creating the picture that they’re the industry’s saving grace, even referencing layoffs. Weird.
That’s 4 odd games to test the waters with. I mean I’m sure they’re great but they wouldn’t be comparable to the likes of halo or forza.
Lol super nothingburger as a lot of us thought.
I guess it garnered them a lot of publicity which I guess is what they were after. On the other hand if they do this again no one is going to care so they blew their wad.
Man if you thought PlayStation had bad communication, Xbox is on a whole another level lol
The overreactions on the Xbox and PS sides were embarrassing. This was really a nothing burger in the end. The most interesting information is that I can continue to play Xbox games day1 on Gamepass and save money for PlayStation/Nintendo games I like. It's a win for everyone.
I am curious about the new hardware announcement they have confirmed for this holiday.
@UltimateOtaku91 renting 🙄🙄🙄
Some massive damage control from Phil here. First he tries to assure Xbox fans that only these 4 "smaller" and "old" games are being ported but later says that he envisions less exclusives being made in the future. That statement only makes sense if Xbox ceases production of games to halt exclusives altogether or they already plan on going multiplatform but are too afraid to outright say it right now.
KILLER INSTINCT PLEASE
@Kraven
You gotta read between the lines dude. A LOT was said but yes, nothing super clear, we can pretty much guess which games are coming but the way they worded it its clear that this is a test to see how these titles fair out on other consoles. I dont expect xbox to go back and port ***** like the original Gears of wars but if they see that you can make money on playstation, expect getting the likes of the Halo, Starfield and maybe even forza on playstation.
I was hoping that Forza Horizon and Indiana Jones would eventually make it to PS5. Looks like I will eventually need to invest in updating my gaming pc.
@Rmg0731
Games nobody wants? Two of the games are in the top 5 of Series X|S exclusives!
1. 92 - Forza Horizon 5
2. 90 - Microsoft Flight Simulator
3. 87 - Hi-Fi Rush
3. 87 - Halo Infinite
5. 86 - Pentiment
Hi Fi is tied with Halo Infinite as the third best Xbox exclusive and Pentiment is number 5!
@Stickleman It's basically what it is, you don't own the games and lose access if you don't pay your monthly fee.
@lacerz if you want to keep the "full multiplatform" candle burning, more power to you. It sounds like you will be in for a long wait on anything other than these 4 games and probably nothing outside the live service, small project, remaster titles.
@Dodoo idk dude, halo is their golden egg goose and I dont think Xbox is dumb enough to try to compete with Gran Turismo on ps5 so forza would definitely be out of the question.
I wonder if the news Sony hasn’t got a big exclusive for the next year changed the announcement?
Why give Playstation the big titles when you now have the upper hand?
@get2sammyb Agreed terrible messaging. Should have nipped the rampant speculation in the bud last week with a tweet.
The podcast was purely based around giving reasons why it would be OK to push games multiplatform... to make the Xbox brand stronger and commit to 'our' beliefs like "play anywhere", "cross-save, cross progressions" etc. while also recommitting themselves to Xbox, Game Pass etc. Four is definitely just the start... assuming they sell.
If you want more Xbox games on PlayStation make sure you play/buy these four
Well I am excited to play Hi-Fi Rush. I'm good on those other three games. It was still pretty wishy-washy on the future though. I will say this about Phil Spencer. He sure does know how to say a lot without actually saying a lot. 😅
@Stickleman
Game Pass absolutely isn't profitable, which is why Phil never says "profitable." He says "sustainable" and "financially viable," which are not the same thing and are meaningless when backed by a $3T company that can sustain immense amount of expenditure.
Plus, smart people know the Game Pass equation is (X-Y)-Z = profit, not X-Y =profit, as Phil's spin would have you believe.
X = Revenue from subscriptions
Y = Expenses including content for the service
Z = Lost revenue from cratering game sales
Also you know what else is community driven? Halo Infinite...just saying!
@AdamNovice I mean gamepass makes like 3 billion a year if not more along with even if it is losing money it's an excellent loss leader.
There's reason everyone has copied it and that's the main way to consume basically all media
Unless I misunderstood, didn't they just confirm that CoD will be day 1 with GamePass going forward? If true, that's a pretty ballsy move - potentially eliminating millions of copies sold on their platform. In order to make those lost sales back, they'd need to keep a sub for 5 months...
Big deal over nothing 😂
Have to be honest, if the four games is what everyone is saying, then these games are definitely not something I am instantly interested in. I wouldn't put these on my psn wishlist, which I do once I have seen previews of other third party games. Thats not being salty or disingenuous, but I would personally originally only purchase an xbox to play gears and halo, but those were never enough for me to do so. Now they have Bethesda and Activision there would be more of an incentive to get one if their games are exclusive because they are games that have been taken away as such from the playstation ecosystem I bought into. But to reiterate I would not buy the 4 games mentioned had they been normal third party games and would not even get them in a sale, I would only try if they were on plus.
@lacerz ive played them both. hi-fi is fine but very overrated. Pentiment have clue how that got an 86. Things like a 5
So to me, the 4 lamest games possible haha. I will play HiFi Rush at some point, and I know Pentiment is supposedly good and well reviewed, but these are not the exciting big news first party games. A lame survival game and Live Service Pirate game, and an indie style side scrolling adventure game are not exciting to me in anyway. I would love to play Indiana Jones, and although I have no want to play Gears or Halo or Starfield, it would have been fun to watch the Xbox crowd freak out some more.
Phil is a serial liar. Don't be surprised if all Xbox games will be released on other platforms. He is always like that—beating around the bush, backtracking, etc.
@BacklogBrad
I’ve already posted this elsewhere, but PS5 has 161 games with an average rating of 100-80. Xbox Series only has 114. Words are cool, but facts are cooler.
@Stickleman Except it isn't sustainable isn't it. Other bigger subscription services are struggling and are having to raise prices or adding commercials into it because the growth of the investment isn't there.
@lacerz i have no idea where you were going with metacritic or how that ties into exclusivity on xbox. But your homework assignment is to buy all 4 of these xbox games and get your friends to buy them too. Then you have to spread the word on how much you love those xbox games. Otherwise, they will be the only 4 xbox games to come to playstation.
They basically said almost nothing. They confirmed 4 games are going multiplatform (likely Hi Fi Rush, Pentiment, Sea of Thieves, and Grounded). They did NOT deny that Starfield and Indiana Jones may eventually come to PS5/Switch. The only real thing of note is that they seemingly are continuing with day and date on Game Pass. I though, for sure, they were ending that.
@Kraven Yeah. Microsoft is responsible for people kneejerk reactions base on words of "insiders"
Jesus.
The only one that's worth buying if these are the game's Hi-Fi Rush, Pentiment, Grounded, and Sea of Thieves, is definitely Hi-Fi Rush. I am sure these games did well on GP but didn't meet sale expectations on Xbox I'll we definitely buy Hi-Fi Rush pass on the other. PS player's want to look at Hi-Fi Rush the guys who made The Evil Within Tango Gameworks made it.
Yep another vague bull#### podcast from Xbox. Telling us absolutely nothing as per usual.
@get2sammyb If you pay very close attention to the ‘fluff’ everyone’s ignored, they suggest they are in a bit of trouble, haven’t grown, laid off staff, finances not growing. So don’t be surprised to see some big name games come across, or Game Pass appear on Nintendos new console. I think they will also increase advertising and change Game Pass pricing and content across different levels. They were also nervous during the interview.
They said plenty.
So, they've planted the seed: four games (for now).
They've signaled the future: "exclusivity will play an increasingly smaller role in the industry" and "we're enabling creators to reach new players beyond the console ecosystem".
The path is laid out. Exclusivity will dwindle and Xbox will gradually morph from a hardware platform to a games publisher. The console will be nothing but a reference PC, more akin Steam Deck than Series X.
And honestly, I expect Sony to follow suit sooner or later. In fact, it's already happening: Bungie games will all be multiplatform and Helldivers 2 has just released day and date on PC.
The industry has reached an unsustainable state and needs to change.
That was a bizarre podcast indeed.
I liked how he tried to tell us how the industry isn't growing... yet Sony and Nintendo are seeing record gains.
It's more Xbox isn't growing.
They still seem to be wary or in denial.
I don't understand why they didn't announce what these games are? Is it because they are undecided on what some of these games will be, or maybe PlayStation and Nintendo get to announce them at their next Direct/Showcase.
@UltimateOtaku91 They definitely milked this week, but I suppose anything to stay relevant
@lightningbolt79 Either you're living in denial or you didn't watch the whole thing. When one says "exclusivity will play an increasingly smaller role in the industry", one is clearly signaling that exclusive games will dwindle. They won't just say it flat out because it's a long-term strategy. The transition will take years, as Phill himself has alluded to. Read between the lines. It's coming.
The fact that these fans want Starfield on PS so bad should tell you how embarrassing the fan base is after they trashed it last year
@UltimateOtaku91 it’s Hifi, Penitment, SOT, and grounded. It ain’t that deep
@Kraven maybe try watching again if you didn’t learn anything
@TheCollector316 I’m sure that’s why Sony has been struggling to copy it for years now
@Stragen8 Exactly, and Game Pass is clearly not helping.
I can see why people are disappointed, but I'd be happy to play Hi-Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves.
@GilberTilbert
They haven't been. PS+ competes with Game Pass, but they won't copy Game Pass. They view Game Pass as "value destructive" and publisher CEOs agree, including that of ABK, because it's true.
@TheCollector316 people care because he spins BS. People get more addicted (more dopamine is released) to the anticipation of pleasure if there is a chance they'll get nothing at all. Fibbin' Phil does his shtick cause we fools lap it up.
This basically ended up being Microsoft sitting awkwardly on a bunch of stools, reminding everyone that they couldn't make anything substantial, so they just bought half the industry in order to control it instead.
@TheCollector316 they copy as much as they can since they’ve publicly stated already that they can’t afford to copy it 1 for 1. Clearly the strategy is working since so many other developers agree it’s great for gaming and games have improved because of it… meanwhile the PS strategy of never bringing games to PC didn’t turn out se well either
he just wanted to confirm the news. he clearly said the people that are making those games , wanted to release a trailer / announce the news with a real announcement and not a podcast like this.
Loads of people are annoyed about the reveals (or lack of them) but let’s be level headed here.
What they told us:
1. Xbox consoles are here to stay
So many were saying Xbox was about to die. That all Xbox exclusives were being ported etc. it was all false. A lot of rumours said Xbox wasn’t making new consoles but we found out they are bringing out new consoles this generation AND next gen. Another myth that was busted.
2. We know the four games
Pentiment, Hi Fi Rush, Sea of Thieves, and Grounded. Okay, they didn’t say it but it’s pretty obvious. I’d eat my hat if it wasn’t them.
3. Xbox will still have exclusives
Most of Xboxes first party games will still be exclusive to Xbox consoles. They aren’t abandoning their core. There will be many more exclusives in the years to come for Xbox consoles. I don’t know why people thought this wouldn’t be the case.
4. Xbox Game Pass is growing in strength
A lot of the anti-Xbox comments on here were saying how “Game Pass is unsustainable” and that Xbox was having to sell on PS/Switch to cover costs. Well they crushed that myth today. All Xbox first party titles are coming to Xbox. And that includes new releases from Activision-Blizzard. Also existing titles are coming starting with Diablo 4 in March. That’s great news for Game Pass users.
5. The gaming community needs to chill
I think the emotional incontinence on display in the last few weeks, the wild speculation and the amount of wrong predictions (and even the fanboy/entitled reactions tonight) shows a lack of professionalism from gaming media and a lack of maturity from the gaming community. I love you guys, but holy moly!
@Kienda Exactly. This comment thread is nuts and delusional. Worst example of ignorant console war nonsense I've seen yet. RELAX
All this says to me is Phil Spencer screaming, "Keep discussing Xbox rumors, please! If it keeps you talking about Xbox this is all we've got right now." As their ship slowly sinks underwater.
Today was the gaming equivalent for Microsoft of the first day of your parents taking you to all the places that you love for the next week so it’ll be less devastating when they tell you that they’re going to sell you to the postman. It never works out in the end.
Man they let their diehard console warriors have a mental breakdown for like two weeks just for this? Kinda based.
@GilberTilbert Actually it was MS that copied Sony with the sub service as PS Now predated game pass. MS just tweaked it and included first party games on release. Sony then merged PS Plus with PS now and added in extra tiers, which funnily enough MS also copied by recently merging game pass and Live.
@Kevw2006 if memory serves me well…. PS Now never had over 3 million subs and was shut down… then PS Plus turned into game pass. Either way, PS is also copying bringing games to PC. MS created unite the blueprint, we’ll see if PS can keep up
I just watched videos of those 4 games mentioned. 3 are a definite pass with only Sea of Thieves the lone interesting game. Grounded might interest me some however the extremely short outdoors infocus distance leading to blur would give me eyestrain and a headache.
Flight Sim, Starfield and the coming Indiana Jones, Elder Scrolls 6 and Fallout 5 or any Fallout remasters/ remakes is what I want. Waiting out a year or two of Xbox exclusivity for those games would be OK, I could wait.
@S1ayeR74 Just like Sony then. Got it.
@TheCollector316 they do? Evidence please. Please provide links.
@GilberTilbert How many subscribers it had doesn't change history, it still came first and as I said before it was rebranded and merged with PS Plus to create the tiers we have now. Big corporations copy off each other all the time, MS and Sony have both taken ideas from each other many times before and will do again. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. If one hits on an idea that proves popular the other would be silly not to look to do something similar, or even try and improve on it. If it's within their capabilities that is.
@Stickleman It turns out they are only at 34 million GamePass subscribers, and that includes PC and all of the Xbox live members they converted to GamePass core.
For example Sony has 47.5 million PSN subscribers.
There is almost certainly an official announcement at the nintendo partner direct whenever that finally lands.
@get2sammyb I had dinner last night with an executive from Sony (who interestingly had a year at Microsoft sandwiched between his 2 stints at Sony) and he explained there is zero buzz within Sony about Xbox and the potential cross-platform strategy. I can see why now!
@Kienda If you are all about facts you have to also include how they admitted they are not growing and the way to grow is to either bring their games to bigger audiences or milk their existing one and they are choosing new audiences. Which means these games and more will be coming. Otherwise there is no growing.
As others rightly said, this is a beginning. But, also, yes. They aren't dropping the Xbox hardware quite yet.
@Kienda The most level-headed take I could've imagined out of all this hysteria. 👍
@hi_drnick Many execs suck at their job. Then the fault is on Sony for not paying attention to what their competitors are doing. I can see why Sony isn't a leader but a follower in most respects.
@Jamesblob so how do you REALLY feel about Game Pass?
I'm sorry, after reading the word "virus" for the 3rd time I couldn't resist
@EVIL-C thanks for the negativity and the implication that a trusted business partner of mine sucks at his job. Kinda renders the rest of your take as irrelevant (to me, at least).
@cburg We shall see, Xbox don't announce console sales, because they are so low. Time will tell of Sony's reduced sales predictions are correct, however Sony I don't think are in trouble, they aren't spending several hundred million each quarter to put a single game day and date on their subscription platform. Plus a new Nintendo console coming out will impact their market and Xbox too.
I only care about Hellblade 2, so that I won't have to upgrade the gpu of my PC.
Damn everyone wants to play Xbox games, huh!
@K1LLEGAL Games Microsoft took away from buying publishers is probably more accurate. I can't say i am interested in any of them though.
@Nem thats a shame. All 4 are great games. Though Grounded and SoT in multiplayer.
@Stickleman I just want to address the “everyone has copied it” comment about gamepass. Interestingly it’s MS who have been looking at other people’s homework in the run up to modern day gamepass. Sony introduced PS Plus in 2010 giving away 3 games a month which you could access for the duration of your subscription. MS followed suit in 2013 with games with gold which was lumped in with Xbox live. At this time (and happy to be corrected if I’m wrong) Sony still offered free network play so the PS plus subscription was an entirely optional extra to get a few games a month. Then Sony introduced PS Now in 2014, a sub service where you could access a library of games with new ones added each month. MS released Gamepass in 2017 as a response to this. The copying has very much been one sided but Gamepass has become more famous because of the day one releases and a back catalogue of all first party titles. I have no idea about the financials but I absolutely do know it is not some amazing original idea that MS came up with.
@TheCollector316 at least you don’t sound bitter about it 😂
@Nem thanks for noticing the facts based element of my comment. And hopefully this reply will give you some new insight and help you have a broader perspective.
First off, they didn’t say Xbox isn’t growing. They said “the industry” isn’t growing.
The gaming industry as a whole has slowed in growth in recent years. It only grew by around 2% last year. Far less than anticipated. However, this is one area where I don’t agree with Phil because he was basically using it as an excuse for laying people off. While growth has slowed, it hasn’t stopped, and they are still making profits. It’s a poor excuse in my opinion.
As for Xbox itself, we can look at Microsoft’s report on that. Xbox moved to being Microsoft’s third largest business in 2023, earning more money than Windows. Both of these businesses are profitable for Microsoft and helped it become a $3 trillion company last year.
Also, they revealed yesterday that Game Pass is now at 34 million subscribers. That’s a 36% increase from the 25 million they reported in 2022 (although there is a caveat to that with Game Pass Core skewing the numbers).
Overall though it’s fair to say Xbox is actually growing.
As for their strategy, they explained their desire to get more players, but that their focus for that strategy was only if it had cross play and cross progression. That can only be properly made available if they own the platform the games are on. So through the Game Pass and Xbox models. They don’t see Xbox as being consoles only, but the platform/app that is used. Xbox on PC for example and the mobile apps.
So yes, there might be more games moving over to other consoles and leaving Xbox exclusivity, but they will also achieve this naturally now that Microsoft owns Activision-Blizzard as their 3rd party games will help fulfil the requirement of being available to more people. When Call of Duty is selling on all consoles, they will class that as being Xbox reaching more people. And for sure, Game Pass will get Call of Duty at some point and that alone will draw in new players to the Xbox platform. And this is their main strategy. They said last night that Xbox games on other console will help draw people in to Xbox. They will see Game Pass subscriptions sky rocket when Call of Duty and other heavy hitters come day 1 to the platform. This will be a combination of Xbox console sales, Game Pass subscribers on PC, and people who previously had no access to CoD trying the cloud and mobile options.
There is a lot more to say, but the general thing to remember is that Xbox isn’t going anywhere. Everything points to them growing in strength.
It's not the first time they've done this, we've had Fez, two Ori games and Cuphead all start as Xbox exclusives before finding more success on other consoles. Plus Minecraft, but that was multi-plat before they owned it.
I wouldn't be surprised in The Gunk is one of these exclusives or one that gets ported in the future, if not to Switch (that would be quite the visual downgrade) then to Playstation.
@Kraven I have to disagree there. If it was a Tweet, the internet would've accused them of hiding behind a pointless text message. I would rather see the whites of their eyes and that is what they did.
Xbox: "We see console exclusives as a thing of the past"
Me: "Nintendo says hi"
Also Me: "Are you absolutely sure this isn't just because the Xbox Install base is too low to give the necessary ROI on your software?"
Hi Fi Rush is a banger of a game. One of the best I've played in the last few years.
@nocdaes That was literally mentioned as a reason in the podcast
Keep Starfield one of the most overhyped games from Bethesda and give me Hellblade 2. But again Phil is useless to be real here his word is worth nothing anyway he changes it at will anyway.
Amusing that the people on Pushsquare are now more angry than the people on Trueachievements towards Microsoft because 90% of the rumors they wanted to be true were grossly overexaggerated
I mean, I'm pretty pumped if Hi-Fi Rush makes it over. One of the few Xbox exclusives I would love to play. Can live without Starfield, Indiana Jones, etc.
Why not Starfield?
It was originally planned as a PS5 exclusive till Microsoft bought Bethesda.
Gears of War and Halo would be weird on PS.
Hi fi rush, Starfield, Blade and ES6 I’d love to be on PS.
Bethesda would lose out on a lot sales if ES6 is Xbox only
Hi fi rush looks amazing, can't wait to buy that one!
@jFug all of those are a hard pass
