The Spice is undoubtedly in the air, with Part Two of Dennis Villeneuve's Dune film adaptation of Frank Herbert's epic sci-fi series now in theatres. Striking while the iron is hot, we also got a stunning gameplay trailer from Funcom for the upcoming survival MMO Dune: Awakening, which was revealed in August 2022 and prophesied to come to PS5 someday.
We see players engaging in incredibly Dune-like activities, speeding across endless deserts, evading sandworms, constructing bases and outposts, and struggling to survive in one of the harshest environments imaginable. That's a pretty compelling pitch for a survival game, but add to that the magic of the setting, and Funcom has a recipe for success with Dune: Awakening, provided they can deliver. Still no word on a release date or even window, but in the meantime, feast your eyes on the screenshots below:

"ChatGPT, create me a sci-fi game with sand and worms". Looks ugly and generic. Nothing will ever beat the evocative power of the original Dune from Cryo Interactive, where everything just felt low-fi and uncivilized, I would say aboriginal and organic, like what you expect from exploring an unlivable desert.
After watching the incredible Dune: Part Two i'm itching for a Dune so yeah i shell check this out.

@B0udoir oh yes Cryo's Dune. Had a blast with it on my megaCD back in the days. I agree it looks generic but it will be tough to resist a Dune MMORPG
I was interested in a Dune game then I found out it's a live service so nope. Not for me.
Saw Dune 2 on Sunday. It's a masterpiece. Possibly the greatest film I've seen in a cinema.

@Hypoman I know he was approached and supplied concepts for Jodorowsky’s ill-fated attempt at making dune in the 70s. IIRC the team that made Alien did so after another attempt at making Dune and worked with Giger for concepts. There’s a cool looking Harkonnen War Machine image kicking around but this may have been for Jodorowsky’s movie. Moebius was also heavily involved with Jodorowsky’s movie and there is a doco all about that’s well worth checking out.

I've just read an interview of the game director and he says that there will be no Fremens in the game or sand walking. Apparently it was a request from the movie production. So basically the challenge was to create a Dune game without Dune content. And GaaS of course....
