Flintlock: Siege of Dawn is an upcoming PS5 action RPG from New Zealand developer A44 Games, best known for its 2018 Souls-Like, Ashen. Today, we were treated to an extended gameplay overview of the studio's next game, giving us our best look yet, with commentary from creative director Simon Dasan.
Influenced by flintlock fantasy fiction, Siege of Dawn is set in the world of Kyon, in which the Coalition Army has the city of the gods themselves under siege but is locked in a brutal stalemate. The game features a caravan mechanic, which will likely feel familiar to Ashen players, allowing a place for NPC characters to gather and give out quests. Combat retains that Dark Souls influence, but with added mobility, a mix A44 insists on calling "Souls-lite", giving us yet another gaming term to contend with.
What do you think of Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn? Did you play Ashen, and what do you think of A44's emerging design style? Let us know in the comments section below.

This is my most anticipated release of the year going forward.
All I see in this video is a blank screen 🤔🤔
I was keeping an eye on this game since its original reveal. Now, I'm even more excited for it. The game feels like it has personality, it's not just a plain copy of a souls-like. I really hope it does well and doesn't get lost in the plethora of games coming each week.
I love Ashen and will probably buy this upon release
For DEI fans out there, you'll be pleased to know that Sweet Baby Inc was reportedly involved in this game.
@R_Ryder thank you, was on the fence but will buy now.
@EchoRange You're welcome. Glad to spread the message.
Maybe free month of gamepass and dip or wait to cone to ps plus. Game looks decent but characters and likely story probably going to be awful
Seems like a lot to like here, but also noticing that the melee combat looks the same throughout the entire video. Ashen was a solid game, but it had a similar problem of boring melee combat. Still, one to keep an eye on..
There was a gameplay video released, a few months back (it may have been sooner), that looked a little sluggish in combat, this one looks like they improved the movement and combat or that last video just wasn't a great representation. Either way, glad to see the speedy movement.
I am not sure how I feel about Inky (is that how they spell it?) Strikes me as a name a child gives and breaks some of the immersion for me. I'm sure it is a shortened name of some sort but i still can't take it seriously.
Last, the gold substitution, 'Reputation'? More and more games are doing there own 'currency' with a twist but then try to sell it as "the normal tender is no longer valuable because XYZ' then turn around and give you "gold". What's the point, call it EXP, keep the gold and drop the superficial 'lore' meta that seems half-baked.
Just a few of my critiques (like anyone really cares about mine haha) but this video did make me reconsider getting this game in the future. Looks way more entertaining than I first thought.
Ashen was so damn good. First Souls-like I ever finished, actually (and one of the hardest). Can't wait to see how this turns out.
I feel like the design is a little bit all over the place. It's like supernatural fantasy, 1800s Western and Medieval all at the same time.
Ashen is an excellent game and a great foundation to build off of. I’m very excited for this.
@R_Ryder fine by me. Don’t have an issue with the firm, more so certain individuals that work there who are behaving unprofessionally. Pretty standard for most companies now, always a couple bad eggs making the whole firm look bad.
The art direction looks pretty generic but the gameplay and story seem intriguing enough! Really like the movement, will keep an eye on this!
