Apparently targeting a 2025 / 2026 release, the next game in Ubisoft's Ghost Recon series has been unveiled by Insider Gaming. The outlet cites anonymous sources, but its track record on all things Ubisoft is practically peerless, so we're sure there's a large degree of accuracy here.
Off the back of 2019's Ghost Recon: Breakpoint — which was a divisive instalment, to say the least — it sounds like the franchise is attempting to revisit its roots. 'Project Over' is described as a first-person tactical shooter with squad-based gameplay. It also boasts 'milsim' (military simulator) elements, suggesting that it's going for a grounded, realistic feel.
Supposedly, the story will see your Ghost squad infiltrate a warzone in order to track down a traitor. According to Insider Gaming's report, "the game appears to take heavy inspiration from the Modern Warfare series, with some potential dark or controversial missions and segments." There's also talk of the title being a "significant" upgrade in terms of visuals.
Given the rumoured release window, we could see this new Ghost Recon game being officially revealed later this year — but it all depends on how far along the project actually is.

I feel that third-person shooters make for far better stealth games, but if they're going to make a whole game based on MW2019's Clean House mission then I get why they'd go for first-person. This game just begs the question of where the hell Sam Fischer is...
Inspired by modern warfare? So not very realistic at all then 🤣
@Northern_munkey It sounds like it's story moments that are inspired by MW rather than gameplay. But yeah... Not exactly realistic either!
First-person has killed a lot of my enthusiasm tbh
Sounds like their getting further away from the original ghost recon games with every title with the latest probably being a far cry from what I would love to see from ghost recon games
@Ocelot The original Ghost Recon games were tactical first-person shooters.
I literally laughed when I read realistic tactical shooter inspired by Modern Warfare.
@ShogunRok why don't they just reboot Island thunder..that was an awesome tactical shooter and was so intense.
Well good, I hope it returns to its roots. I remember staying up overnight with my friend playing GRAW on his 360. Don’t really know what direction they went with the last two.
But what they should do is make a third person mode and a first person mode. That way people who are traditionalist would enjoy third person. I will do both.
I really want them to make an extraction based mode to play. If they take anything from MW make a DMZ mode.. Call of Duty abandoned it
My favourite Ghost Recon is the first one hope it's somewhere close to that.
Genuinely like the sound of this as I have always preferred Ghost Recons lethargic gameplay style to the more fast paced shooters.. Tactical all the way.
I was hoping for a Wildlands 2.
@T-Bone09 You'd think Ubisoft would have jumped on the extraction shooter bandwagon a long time ago, seeing as the Dark Zone is The Division was basically a small scale extraction shooter.
They nearly invented the genre and yet can't figure out a game like that could do business for them...
It's sad. Ubisoft hasn't done anything innovative or groundbreaking in years. They're just chasing trends and gameplay designs and not doing anything substantially different or impressive in nearly any of their titles that hasn't been done before or better by a someone else. They've become industry trend chasers.
That's a shock, I was expecting a cutesy mascot platformer
@T-Bone09 GRAW was quite good but it was nowhere near as good as the original ghost recon and island thunder. After island thunder the series just nose dived and has never regained its title as the best online tactical shooter. ARMA and ARMA2 were better but christ they were hard-core.
Im still waiting for another GR Advanced warfightet
So...back to the original ghost recon games then lol
@ShogunRok
Very few shooters are actually realistic because true realism does not translate to fun gameplay.
@Kidfunkadelic83 Still waiting for another Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars. I would settle for a port.
As someone who’s some of their fondest gaming memories are playing the first Ghost Recon and it’s amazing Island Thunder add-on in couch co-op with their friend as a teenager while blasting out the latest System Of A Down Album… I welcome this move.
"Inspired by" really means, "would love to emulate the revenue model of", and it all makes sad sense. Unfortunately, Ubisoft is just slavishly following the money and just producing yet another first person shooter in marketpkace already flooded with so many other first person shooters. Why not double down in the elements that made Ghost Recon different and unique in the marketplace, which are tactical, stealth, recon and THIRD PERSON, minimal HUD, squad coop, rather than trying to make yet another boring Modern Warfare clone? They're trying to please Wall Street investors rather than game players and not realizing that if they alienate their customers, they'll eventually lose their sales, lose customers and then lose Wall Street investors that they desperately want to please.
To everyone saying they're getting away from their roots - this also goes for pushsquare saying it sounds like ghost recon is going all "modern warfare".. ghost recon started 23 years ago and were realistic first person military sims. One shot deaths for you and your enemies. If you didn't die you limped around or suffered penalties for an injury. If anything it sounds like those are the roots they're going back to which I welcome. For the last 15 years ghost recon games have been arcade jokes
Used to love Ghost recon back in the day! Can't remember the last first person one they did, but had to be the original Xbox days. Last one that was decent for me was probably Advanced Warfare.
Yeah I'm good thanks.
I liked Ghost Recon for the third person perspective. We have enough first person military shooters out there.
Give me realism but third person.
I'm out
I hope not. I'd rather something like wildlands or GRAW 2 and save the FPS for rainbow 6
I know it started as a 1st perso perspective game but i loved the 3rd person shift. It is a shame. Breakpoint is terrible but Wildlands was so much fun. It could use some more realistic elements. The Sniper Elite games were my 2nd favorite games but part 5 was the worst in realism. I hope this project ‘Over’ will be a great comeback…..
Modern Warfare (2019) or COD4?
I’d also like a new Rainbow Six Vegas game too
@pukana yeah vegas and vegas 2 were great games. I loved how you could breach a room as a team through different entrances etc. Flash and clear, frag and clear etc. Another game i really liked was Full spectrum warrior if you ever had the pleasure to play it. The sequel 10 hammers, not so much tho.
@Kidfunkadelic83 I vaguely remember the name but don’t think I ever tried it. Been replaying some of the old splinter cells so might have to give that a try too
How realistic could it be when they said that 2 ghost recon games ago.
@NinjaNicky like Rainbow six Vegas, that would have my attention
@Ocelot Eh? I'm really curious as to what you think the original Ghost Recons were...
