In case you'd forgotten, EA and its studio Cliffhanger Games is working on a Black Panther game. The announcement was one of those that's more of a recruitment drive than anything else, so it's likely still years away from release. In fact, the team is still growing; interestingly, one recent job opening confirms the game's structure will be that of an open world title.
We already knew this Black Panther game will be a third-person, single-player action adventure, and now we can safely say it's an open world one. The job listing is for a Principal Sandbox Designer, tasked with "designing and populating encounters, systems, and gameplay within a dynamic and evolving open world". Not a lot of room for interpretation there.
Back before the game was announced, Giant Bomb's Jeff Grubb said it would be an open world experience. He also said the project is being led by Kevin Stephens, which has also turned out to be true. Stephens served as VP and studio head of Monolith Productions, known for open world titles Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War, and is now VP and Studio GM at Cliffhanger.
This game is not to be confused with Skydance's Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, which focuses on Black Panther as well as Captain America.
Are you excited about an open world Black Panther game? Let us know in the comments section below.

More Marvel and now open world, pass.
I think with Marvel games I'm good with whatever Insomniac cooks up. Spidey 3, Wolverine and that X-Men game they're doing would excite me, but everything else I can skip.
All these Marvel games in development and it seems we may go through this whole generation without a good DC game…
@jFug Or a good Marvel game?...
Da Dun Tss
(I jest of course. I legit loved Spidey 2.)
Ugh. This is why big budget western games suck now. Marvel, open world, Marvel, Star Wars, open world, etc.
Its just so boring! Thank god for the Japanese devs, they've been bringing it this gen.
Part of the fun of Spider-Man was the feel of swinging from building to building.
Black Panther has a real boring move-set for an open world game. Should have gone the Anthem route with Iron Man imo.
Black Panther? Give me Black Cougar, cowards.

@Ichiban Open world is fine IF you put in the work. Procedurally generated content sucks. It is the difference between something tight, focused and rewarding like Fallout 3, and something that is mile after mile of absolutely nothing like Starfield.
I love open world games, but dislike super heroes like Marvel and DC. I’ve never seen anything of Black Panther though. Maybe this game will change my mind on super hero games
@Ichiban
Asia in general I'd say.
@LifeGirl I might be wrong but I think an open world Iron Man game is in development.
Personally I’m remaining positive on this. It’s been a while since EA has had a stab at a true open world so they might surprise us and do something different. They have proven they can respect a popular IP with the Jedi games so I am interested to see what happens.
I have such a huge fatigue from all the superhero games that I am willing to pass on this one before I even see gameplay of it.
I am also most willing now to pass on any game made by EA and Ubisoft
Excited for this one!!!
I just hope you can play as Shu’ri. She has been Black Panther several times now in comics and the latest movie.
@Ryu_Niiyama nah, King T'Challa all the way, baby.
Depends on the story and the world they are building
Hard pass. Though I wish they gave more details about it.
How is your game differentiating from the other open world games out there?
I'm excited for most any single player third person game.
@Starkei I never said anything about not playing as T’Challa. But Shu’ri is blessed by Bast same as her brother and has a right to the mantle same as he. She just usually doesn’t want it.
But now that you mention other Black Panthers, it would be cool to see Ghost Panther (Ororo Monroe), Ngozi would be cool as she was also bonded with Venom.
So yeah now I am hoping they really dig into the comic lore. Thanks for that! 🥳
@Ryu_Niiyama Yeah... None of the character are probably happening. I expect them to stay safety in the realm of just T’Challa.
@AverageGamer Yeah I just put out what I hoped for. It’s cool when devs really pay attention to the lore of its source material. I will just hope for the best and see what happens.
@Ryu_Niiyama Yeah. It great when dev do pay attention to the lore. But it still has to be plateable for the mainstream audience. Most only know of Ororo Monroe as Storm. Most would probably get upset if T’Challa doesn't get a game only to himself.
@AverageGamer That was why I mentioned both the comics and Wakanda Forever. When I was just thinking about Shu’ri at least. Mainstream goes off of what is most recent in their memory. Which is why most folks don’t realize Monica Rambeau was Captain Marvel way before Carol Danvers and only became Photon later. Either way, I will just hope for the best and see what happens.
@NinjaNicky I'm not sure what one has to do with other. I don't like the modern Spider-Man movies but that didn't stop me from enjoying Insomniac's Spidey games. Same with Guardians of the Galaxy. Didn't much care for the movies but enjoyed the game.
I'm listening... Eager to see how this one shapes up, though I have to choose open-world games wisely. They can be daunting when done wrong OR they can be incredibly fun to explore when done right. 🤞🏼
open world is so lame now , when will it go out of style ? it’s just an excuse to not be creative with varied levels and fill the game with fetch quest bloat and padding out the map with copy/paste 👎😴
