Koei Tecmo has shared a brief sales update for recent PS5 exclusive Rise of the Ronin, revealing "sales are surpassing the Nioh series". Without posting any hard numbers, it goes on to say the game has a "high valuation" amongst players and the company is now looking at "mid to long-term growth" for the title.
Released on the same day as Dragon's Dogma 2, it's only in Japan where Rise of the Ronin has been publicly recording noteworthy sales figures. It's consistently been one of the top-selling games in the country since launch, but has fallen out of the top 10 physical sales charts in the UK. Despite a fairly muted critical response, the title has resonated more with its playerbase as Team Ninja converts the Nioh formula into an open world and more approachable setting.
The game commands a Metacritic rating of 76 after 123 verdicts, with our own Rise of the Ronin PS5 review awarding it a 6/10. "With dated open world design and a monotonous narrative, the cracking combat of a Team Ninja title is left to try and pick up the pieces. It manages to get the title in acceptable shape, and with its Bonds system and culture clash, just about forms an experience one could enjoy."
Are you happy to hear the game seems to be selling decently enough, or at least doing better than the Nioh games? Put your thoughts in the comments below.

Nioh is a soul games so ya it going to sell less then a game u have the choice how hard u want it to be.
I love it, it's a great game. The only issue was that some people made noise online about the graphics so people assumed the game was bad. Which tbh is absolutely ridiculous. Team Ninja fans knew it would still be good. Plus the difficulty settings meant that it was accessible to more players than Nioh
Yeah I always thought the open-world + difficulty levels combination would tempt more “casuals” than the Nioh games. I personally love Nioh and particularly Nioh 2 but there’s no denying that they are difficult, even when compared to other souls-likes.
It’s a great game but should have been delayed
I'm very eager to start it, but that 2024 backlog is in the way.
I mean critics didn't want to give the game a chance and meet it on its terms so it scored poorly.
In Asian regions it is still in the top 10 digitally on the store with strong word of mouth.
I'm happy for TN as they do feature combat systems that beat almost all other devs.
@C25CLOUD Nioh is not a souls game. It's a TN game. This is a silly mistake some people make. Its gameplay is nothing like souls games. The only similarity is the UI. Any other similar feature has existed for decades.
I’ve got to admit despite being a lover of Nioh I was pretty put off by the critical reception but most of the stuff I have seen from players has been really positive. Might need to pick this up when I have got through some of my current backlog
@JohntheRaptor it’s the same formula as a fromsoft game
Rise of the Ronin is a great game.
It’s more assessable for people with having multiple difficulty options available
@C25CLOUD Dark Souls Series sold over 35 million copies, Elden Ring sold over 23 million as well so you underestimate how popular these kind of games are.
Removed - unconstructive
Its a pretty decent game though heavily dumbed down compared to Nioh and Wo Long.
@Starkei Do you even know what woke means?
@C25CLOUD Elden Ring is one of the highest selling games of the generation.
All them casuals just couldn't cope with the masocore God that is Nioh 💪 😉
And people say PS5 exclusives don't sell...
Anyways, good for KT.
I’m absolutely delighted to hear this.
Well deserved! Despite its flaws it quickly became one of my favourite games of all time. Hoping they bring out some DLC for it somewhere down the line…
@DennisReynolds yeah it's that philosophy you adopted in season 15 to bang zoomer chicks.
Edit: Was joking Dennis. Some of my favourite games get blasted by the anti-woke types.
@CielloArc It depends on the scale of sales a company is looking for. Square Enix are greedy, to them a game needs to sell at least 10mill to be considered a success.
Open World + Difficulty options vs a Soulslike that isn't from FromSoftware. Yeah, it was obvious.
@Yorozayu Cheers mate I will absolutely give it a go at some point. My New Year’s resolution was to stop buying so many full priced games and I have failed at that miserably so far this year so will wait till it’s cheaper and I have cleared some of the backlog.
@Yorozayu a lot of people complaining about graphics and performance and also it released on same day as dogma. The only reason they would push for a release is because of the fiscal year ending
I’m glad it’s getting the recognition it deserves! It’s a great game, and I’m glad I got the platinum trophy for it. That said, the game was too long and had a convoluted story, with too many characters to keep track of. I hope they can deliver a tighter experience next time. And we already know the combat will be top notch.
I’m loving my time with it. Not everything lands but it’s a really fun game that I also happen to think is quite beautiful. Hope it does well, Team Ninja is onto something with this formula.
Game is on my to get list for sure. Still have Wo Long sealed in my backlog though.
It's really good. I'm glad I took a chance on it, no regrets.
What is the performance like (in performance mode) on RotR now after the last patch. I still read about framerate drops and stuttering (some say much worse than before), yet others say all this was improved in the last patch?!
I have a VRR TV, but I am very intolerant to framerate pacing issues, stuttering, or drops much below 55fps. I have watched the tech reviews at launch so know graphics and ray trace mode are out, so its just down to how well performance mode performs now after the last patch.
I feel like I'm one of the few who likes the game. Yeah, it's practically Nioh but open world but as someone who loves Ghost of Tsushima and Nioh, that's good enough for me.
Also, I genuineky didn't care when people complained about the graphics. For me, rhey were good enough. I play Tecmo games for their gameplay, not for the graphics. Why else is the warriors franchise still going to this day?
@GeeEssEff I was also put off, but then dove in. After a couple of hours with it, and putting it on the highest difficulty available from the start, it still feels like a Team Ninja game. It blends some of Nioh with some of Wo Long, and so far I am very pleased.
@Rich33 If you’re sensitive to it, I’d recommend holding off a bit longer. Performance is all over the place. Sometimes it’s a rock solid 60fps and other times it’s just not. A shame as the world is extremely well crafted.
Thank you.
Enjoyed Nioh 2 (not to mention other similar games like DS and Lies of P), so wanted to give this one a go - initial tech reports were promising, but with a bit of patching needed so I decided not to buy yet. Thank you - hopefully they will get this sorted soon.
I’ll Definitely play this game soon, it was just released on a bad timing for me personally, Final Fantasy Rebirth taken up all my time till now
Definitely had a lot of marketing
good thing gamers didnt listen to pushsquares trashy review
