Unicorn Overlord, the typically gorgeous Vanillaware strategy RPG that released in early March, has now sold over 500,000 copies. The news comes directly from publisher Atlus, via the game's new accolades trailer (which just so happens to include your favourite PlayStation website).
It's the kind of result that we've come to expect of Vanillaware titles. They're never going to penetrate the mainstream, but they do seem to be gaining popularity amongst the more hardcore crowd. It's also worth noting that Unicorn Overlord launched during a particularly busy period, just a week or so after Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and just over a week before the likes of Dragon's Dogma 2 and Rise of the Ronin. It's done well for itself, despite the obvious competition.

For additional context, it took Vanillaware's previous game, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, roughly three years to top 1 million sales — and it was crowned the studio's best selling release. At present, it looks like Unicorn Overlord could become the developer's fastest selling title, given that it's already reached half a million in less than a month. Something to keep an eye on.

Makes sense. Sales data seems to suggest it sold better on Switch, and unlike 13 Sentinels, it was there at launch.
Very well deserved. It was a fantastic entry into a genre that has been really barren for a while, and hopefully it'll be a continual IP for them to create a sequel in a space that has been long dominated by Fire Emblem.
Definitely a game made you wanting more and more even after it took me 100+ hours to complete everything the game has to offer. It was just that good.
Yes, success stories like this, please! Wonderful to hear. Haven't played it yet, but it's Vanillaware, so an absolute must.
They deserve it. I had so much fun! It doesn’t really lend to a sequel but I hope they figure out some way to come back to this system (granted VW love to one hit wonder their games). Played on Nintendo Switch.
N.i.c.e. now can we get muramasa the demon blade.that game was amazing on the psvita.word up son
@playstation1995 muramasa was amazing. So gorgeous and fun to play. 13 sentinels I find is their best work so far.
@playstation1995 yeah would love muramasa on a “collections” release with dragons crown and odinsphere etc

SixthAxis? OMG!
Anyway good on em.
I got it downloaded but I have only managed to play about 5 hours so far. You have to grind a bit with the side content to ensure you are the right level for the main quests. Right now DD2 and Rise of the Ronin are taking up most of my time. I can imagine with the other upcoming games I might not finish this one until the summer along with P3R.
Hopefully June - Aug in 2024 is merciful on us with backlogs. Usually it's the less desirable games that come out during this time so I really hope Star Wars Outlaws is a September onwards launch. (I don't mind games like saints row coming out haha).
It's nice when good games sell well
@Dodoo. Yeah its a amazing game you get to play as 2 samurai.and the gameplay is excellent.word up son
@tameshiyaku oh yeah i remember playing muramasa on my psvita i bought the physical copie.it was a really fun game.word up son
It sells like crazy in here, the switch region 1 (usa / middle east) physical version is still out of stock here in my country, only the europe/uk version is available, which is not ideal since I played the demo on my switch usa account (7 plus hours) and want to continue it.
Easily my favorite VanillaWare game and my favorite 2024 game thus far, gonna be hard to top too.
So far best game of the year, congrats Vanillaware
A tonne of fun, I’m about 75 hours in and I’ve only explored about 70% of the map.
@darylb24 Grinding for XP isn’t really needed. Just pop Alain’s valour skill for double XP whenever a unit is about to claim a position. Those give more XP than fights, and with the XP boost you’ll regularly be levelling up. At no point have I had to grind XP so far, about 80 hrs in and at the end. Also a good unit can defeat units higher level than them so definitely experiment.
Fantastic game. Endless depth when it comes to unit formations and customisation. If they make a sequel that adds a bit more depth to the story and world, we’ll be in for even more of a treat.
@ShadowofSparta That's a great tip thanks!
@playstation1995 yeah I played murumasa on the vita. It’s unicorn overlord I haven’t. Yet!
That’s great news and I look forward to getting this! I liked all their games so far but I haven’t LOVED one, this might be it as the demo had its hooks in me.
My personal fave so far is Muramasa Rebirh, a game I wish would see a modern console port
I really need to get into this game soon. I'm not a huge Strategy RPG fan but I'd eat anything Vanillaware cook.
Also, still hoping for Muramasa to be ported on modern consoles.
