Square Enix's ever-popular MMO, Final Fantasy XIV, is currently experiencing a sustained DDoS (distributed denial-of-service) assault. The publisher/developer has warned its millions of invested players to expect login and connection issues until they are successfully repelled.
In a blog post, Squeenix revealed that the attack began around 6 a.m. on 6th May and appears to be ongoing as of this writing. Players may experience difficulty logging in, sending/accessing data, or randomly becoming disconnected from Japanese, North American, European, or Oceaniac servers.
Over on the FFXIV subreddit, the community is doing what it can to pass the time until they can get back in. They regale each other with tales of who lost the most progress when the connection cut out (this guy, probably), and morale seems reasonably high for now. It remains to be seen how long the outages will last, but we imagine Yoshi-P is on the case.
Have you been personally affected by the ongoing DDoS attacks plaguing Final Fantasy XIV's servers? What are you doing to pass the time until you can return to Eorzea again? Let us know in the comments section below.

This is why we can't have nice things.
Tried logging in when I got home from work, got one mini-cactpot and lost connection mid-way thru the second one. Since maintenance was planned tonight anyway, I just moved on with my life for the evening.
Why people do stuff like these DDoS attacks is utterly beyond me.

Wait what? There's scheduled maintenance from 6pm PST to 3am PST. They've been putting up notifications all week, and I was in game when the notification went into chat at the scheduled time for shutdown. It's for the new eu data center, and updates prepping for dawntrail.
Are you guys sure the old ddos recurred? At the same time as planned maintenance? 🤔
Edit: yeah read the blog post but that's surprising. Maybe it didn't affect all data centers. I made sure to get some time in before the planned downtime and everything seemed normal right up until the scheduled stop. Strange they'd pick a ddos time when it was going to be shut down anyway.
I think this started while I was doing a raid. Entire party lagged and wiped out and some of the other people in fight said it was a DDOS thing. I haven't been back on since so I don't know if it's any better.
I was able to do my roulettes yesterday, just about. my favourite moment was definitely during the world of darkness 24-man raid where I DCed, the game rubber-banded and I discovered I was now main tank for the 5-headed serpent boss. I'm fairly new to tanking so it was pretty exciting lol
This is the problem with games that require an always online connection
@KillerBoy …it’s an MMORPG.
@NEStalgia It definitely affected me and everyone in my FC.
@dskatter Either I had lucky timing (just before the scheduled outage, was trying to cram in an hour or so because totally not addicted or anything) or it must not have equally affected all servers. I almost feel guilty, had a completely normal session. Had no idea anything was going on.
@NEStalgia You’re a bad person for being able to play and you should feel bad. I’m glad SOMEONE was able to play normally for a bit with this annoyance going on!
The kind of people who engage in these DDoS attacks are just such jerks.
@WizzNL, it would indeed, haha. Thanks!
