GreedFall II: The Dying World is the first sequel Spiders Studio has ever made, but based on a new IGN preview, the RPG still appears to be very much its own thing. Not only is it actually a prequel to the first game, but the combat system has been completely changed. Taking inspiration from BioWare RPG Dragon Age: Origins, you'll slow down time and queue up actions for your party to utilise rather than engage in real-time hack-and-slash fights.
Detailed in the clip above, you can pause the action at any time and give out orders to your party members, then resume the passage of time to see those commands carried out. Dragon Age: Origins is directly cited as a game it's attempting to emulate in GreedFall II, giving players a slower, more methodical combat system. Overall, it's suggested the game has a more "old school" feel.
What do you make of this significant change to the series' combat system? Does it make you more or less excited for the follow-up? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

As a bit of trivia, this is not their first sequel.
The technomancer was actually a sequel to mars: war logs.
Dragon age origins had one of the best combat systems I have ever played, loved it!! If they can emulate that then I'm in day one!!
It's no secret that Spiders always took a lot of inspiration from Bioware. But hey its not the worst thing to be inspired by.
Unfortunately for me it's one of the worst aspects of DA Origins. The game held me over due to its amazing characters and plot, but I doubt Greedfall 2 would do the same.
I saw that. Kinda nice because I have way too many games lined up for this year. I can check this out a couple years later than. Maybe I'll be in the mood again for this kinda game by then^^
Still havent even touched Baldurs Gate
Was watching this earlier today and honestly not a bad move, gameplay in the first sucked and was a big detractor from what was a really strong game all around imo.
I don't really like the look of it but I'm assuming they'll still fine tune it + anything is better than the first game's 'combat'
I will definitely get this as I enjoyed the world of the first one but I can guarantee I will have to have a walkthrough. I followed one for the first game and was still utterly confused and mystified all the way through.
I AM THE LEGATE OF THE CONGREGATION!!!!
Sounds good! Finishing up FF12 which is basically a precursor to DAO.
I tried Greedfall for free, and I even finished it I think. Or got quite far. It was rough. I like to hear about the improvement to combat, but I think the developer will need to restart a new IP on the basis of everything the studio have learned and honed further for me to be interested.
That kind of combat is a horrible bastardization of what inspired it (turn based TTRPG) and should be banned from being in any game again. Origin’s combat makes the gameplay such a chore next to amazing writing and role-playing.
Needless to say, this makes me a lot less interested lol.
lol to characters and enemies wailing away on each other in combat with zero reaction. Old school indeed, this game looks archaic. Wake me when Steelrising 2 comes out.
@Nem Not a sequel but set in the same universe.
The first was a very weird, oddly engrossing old school RPG that was clunky in more ways than I can describe. This looks like very much more of the same, and I’ve no doubt it’ll find its cult appeal again. Hopefully they tone down the frankly unhinged accent they gave the elves in the first one though.
Loved the first one and i am so down for this one. Always in for a spiders game
Welp there goes all interest I had in the sequel and I guarantee the casual audience is going to be the same
@ear_wig hell yeah another Steelrising fan I loved that game. I also really liked the Technomancer and wouldn’t mind seeing a sequel to that
@Jaz007 right there’s a reason BioWare abandoned it for every sequel and why when people talk about Origins it’s never about the bad combat but the amazing story, characters and choices
@EnragedGibbon you really believe that?you have to be the first I’ve ever seen say that lol but to each their own
Hopefully the feeling of shooting in the game stays the same. Oddly satisfying with the rumble and sound effect in the original game.
Welp, that'll be a no for me, dawg. Hate turn-based games.
Yeah I remember the combat being a bit clunky. This doesn’t seem much better though based on the look of it. Reminds me of KOTOR(never played DAO) and the combat is not what I remember most fondly about that game
@Jaz007 boo, I love Dragon Age: Origins gameplay and felt like it was way more fun and interesting than any ‘TTRPG’ I’d ever played. I’m way more hyped for this game now.
THINGS ARE ABOUT TO GET DICEY!!!!
Oh too bad bioware couldn't make a game like dragon age origins for the last decade...
@AverageGamer erm... what do you suppose Greedfall 2 is?
Article says same world in the past with a new combat system.
Technomancer totally is a sequel to mars war logs. Actually it's a side-quel? They are supposed to happen around the same time in different locations. There is a character that shows up on both. If i recall it's the master of the technomancer that also appears in mars war logs as a bad guy.
Either way, totally the same series and came after so it's a sequel in that sense.
@Nem I don't consider Greedfall 2 a sequel either. And never stated it was... The article did.
The studio founder has never considered Technomancer a sequel. They stated that during plenty of interviews back when the game originally come out.
@AverageGamer I see.
Well, as for the technomancer, yes they consider it a different story in the same world that runs in parallel as i mentioned. But those are technicalities.
It was a modern take on the world of mars war logs(both are rpg's). They talked on those same interviews how it was returning to the world of mars. That is a sequel in all but the title. Actually... where do you think technomancers first appeared? Yup. Mars war logs.
But, fair enough, if you have a different interpretation so be it. I do not agree with it though.
I’ll definitely play this off the back of the first, though I was hoping for less of a reinvention and more of an evolution. Hope it comes together!
@dark_knightmare2 I actually do but maybe it's more rose tinted glasses? I loved FFXII for the same reason, pre-programming the fights. Just something a bit different, plenty of action style gameplay about...
@dark_knightmare2 Bought Technomancer on a deep sale years ago and have yet to try it. Will be sure to give it a go 👍🏼
Why copy the worst thing of the greatest RPG of all time?
