Rockstar continues to print money through GTA 5, with publisher Take-Two revealing that the open world crime caper has sold over 200 million copies across all platforms since launching in 2013. This lovely round milestone is second only to Minecraft, which has an incredible 100 million copy lead on Michael and company.
Take-Two began bragging about the admittedly massive achievement ahead of the company's earnings call on Thursday (thanks, VGC). Originally released on PS3 and Xbox 360, GTA 5 would later be rereleased on PS4, PC, and Xbox One and then again on PS5 and Xbox Series S/X; a whole new generation of players are apparently ageing into and picking up the game, as we can't fathom there are many core gamers left to push units on.
The GTA franchise has racked up almost half a billion sales, and GTA 5 makes up nearly half of that figure. With GTA 6 on track to potentially be even more significant, the future seems bright for the powers at Take-Two, who almost certainly have another lucrative cash cow on their hands
How many times have you purchased GTA 5? Can you believe the title is still selling strongly for over a decade? Let us know in the comments section below.

Wow, never played the top 2 games of all time. I guess I should dive in.

Absolutely mental numbers. I've always moderately enjoyed GTA, never been a super fan, but it is just such a "staple" game in every aspect for just picking it up for 30 minutes and messing around, that it kind of has this universal appeal, and so if anything was to have such sales numbers, it makes sense that GTA would be up there.
...I'll admit that I've always been more fond of Vice City and 4, though.
Gosh, a GTA game released and re-released on no less than eight platforms/THREE console generations (PC, PS3, PS4, PS5, 360, XBone, series s, series x) sold that many? I am completely shocked, SHOCKED I say.
Gonna be more of the "I've never played GTAV" feeling cool and accomplished comments. Interesting how I spent, well still spending hours upon hours on R* games and now it's looking like I'm spending those hours on FromSoftware games, who would've thought!
@dskatter you probably shouldn't dismiss one of the greatest sales milestones in gaming history like that. skyrim has been re-released just as many times as gta v and has less than a third of its sales. average games can be re-released 50 times and they wouldn't get anywhere near 200m copies sold. on the contrary, there has to be market demand for a game to warrant a re-release in the first place and gta v has that in spades.
never ceases to amaze me that a single game can exceed an entire franchise in copies sold. take resident evil for example... the franchise spans 30 games, including spinoffs and remakes and the total sales for the franchise is only 157m copies. final fantasy franchise has sold 185m copies. then you have assassins creed franchise which spans close to 30 games, including spinoffs and has sold the same amount as gta v at 200m copies. it just boggles the mind.
Minecraft has only seen 300 million lifetime sales? I would’ve expected it to have been closer to 1 billion with how widespread the popularity has been. (I mean, come on have you seen my avatar?! Of course I’d think that, haha)
@Porco It’s because Skyrim is fantasy and GTA fulfills everyone’s desire to give into to their base urges and steal cars, shoot anyone they see, and basically do everything you (hopefully) would never do in reality.
I say this as one of those idiots who re-bought GTAV on PS3, PS4 and PS5. I AM part of the problem, and Rockstar will likely milk GTA VI on the PS5, 6, 7 and 8.
@d-slice me also. Have a PS5 copy of GTA V in my backlog and shamed to admit it’s still unsealed from the the time I bought it 😔.
GTA 6 will likely sell 10+ million copies on day 1 alone with this level of hype
It's an amazing achievement, no matter how you look at it.
I did end up buying this for a couple of platforms myself and I enjoyed it, my personal favourite in the series is still Vice City, so hopefully GTA6 will recapture some of that magic
I've been playing this series since the start when they were DMA Design and the 3D roots of the series are actually on the N64 with the rather good Body Harvest. Funny to think that if Nintendo had liked Body Harvest then GTA likely wouldn't even exist
I've put over 4000 hours into GTAV/Online according to the last time I did that PlayStation stats thing.
I have bought it twice. Once on release for PS3 10 years ago, and then once for PS5 on the cheap last year. Thought enough time had passed to do another play through! Admittedly only got in 10 hours or so before I moved on, it’s feels quite dated to me, but it is one hell of a game and just mad how it’s spanned 3 generations.
Two purchases of GTA5: PS3 a week after release in 2013, PS4 2016, both disc copies. Over 2,000 hours of single player and online play. Amazing entertainment cost per hour ratio, especially the PS3 years of online play that did not require Plus to play online.
Your title is a bit misleading I’d say
The fact that R* was selling copies of the game including currency for cheaper than you could buy currency in game means there's a really weird economy with GTA V.
People were buying copies just to get virtual money then presumably selling their selling/trading in their copies to get more new copies and more currency. Very strange.
@dskatter I mean San Andreas has technically been rereleased on more platforms I believe.
3x self accounted for
-Purchased on launch day for PS3
-Purchased ‘enhanced’ (not exactly) PS4 version (sold PS3 and disc games to a friend)
(landlord steals just about all non-portable electronics including PS4)
-Purchased for Xbox series (could not find a PS5 at retail price)
Though perhaps proud to admit never even spent a penny on ‘GTA Online’. All while that may be the bread and butter for revenue (furthermore not exactly motivation to rush GTA6).
@dskatter I’m sure they will sell at some point GTA 5 remastered for the PS6 Pro. For half the price of GTA 6 remaster for the base PS6 haha.
