Baldur's Gate 3 developer Larian Studios is one-and-done, crafting one of the greatest RPGs of our time before bouncing. They are working on two new games, which the masterful studio claims will be even better. Earlier, we brought you word that the Belgium-based developer had just opened its seventh office in Poland, with the developer ready to move on to more incredible things. Still, studio founder and director Swen Vincke was recently asked if he had any advice for whoever has to follow Larian's performance.
Speaking to GamesRadar+ at the Digital Dragon's conference in Poland, Vincke said that he doesn't want to "poison the well" by offering the theoretical Baldur's Gate sequel developer advice, instead suggesting: "It's going to be up to them. I mean, they have to do their own thing, right... I look forward to seeing what they're going to do with it. I honestly think there are so many things that you could do. So they have a realm of possibility waiting for them."
The Baldur's Gate IP has been legendary since the late 90s, at least on PC. Currently held by the toymaker Hasbro, the massive entity has been threatening to capitalise on the success of Baldur's Gate 3 since its release last year, making a bold $1 billion bet on internal game development. We'll watch for news of whoever takes the reins next and hope they are given the time, resources, and trust to make a sequel worthy of the series.
How are you feeling about the future of the Baldur's Gate series? Is there a developer you can think of that would be up to the task, provided they were allowed to cook properly? In the comments below, cross your fingers and pray to all the gods for Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous and Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader developer Owlcat Games.

Rogue Trader was such a colossal step down following BG3 why would we want them steering the ship again?
Wait, so Larian don't own the IP? I always thought they did but seems like I was wrong. Going to be hard for them going forward with a new IP and even harder for Hasbro to find someone to follow up the huge success of BG3.
@scoobdoo Rogue Trader was made by Owlcat (Pathfinder developers), not Larian. And on a massively smaller budget. Can't see how that's related to anything Larian does.
@UltimateOtaku91 at least one of the new games is going to be another Divinity game. I know that most newcomers to cRPGs know Larian as the BG3 guys but Divinity has been going strong for over twenty years.
@lst and hopefully the next Divinity game is a sequel and not another prequel.
Hm I still dont understand much about what Boulders Gate 3 is about. It would be interesting if someone wanted to explain it to me at some point in time. Lol.
Meh, not like BG3 was GOTY or anything. I'm sure whoever takes over the IP will be fine. It was no Spiderman 2.
I'm not sure I follow you, @UltimateOtaku91. Are you suggesting that Larian will find it hard going forward with a new IP?
If you are not aware, Larian made Divinity Original Sin 1, which was regarded as one of the best CRPGs of all time, until Larian then made Divinity Original Sin 2, which was then considered to be the best CRPG of all time. Obviously, Larian then surpassed both games when they made Baldur's Gate 3, which is regarded by many to be the best game ever made. Not just best CRPG, but best game full-stop. And it seems that generally, people that disagree with that have not actually played the game.
So, Larian will not struggle with their next game. Will it be as good as BG3? Who knows, but I suspect it will still be of the highest quality. I also suspect that one of the two games they are making is DoS3. What the other one is, I have no idea, but there is a reason why Larian are regarded as the absolute pinnacle of developers, and that is because they make superb games, which, whilst I appreciate may not appeal to a huge audience, does not depreciate from the actual quality of their games. Larian are easily the best developer out there, and I have no doubts whatsoever that their next game will be yet another Game of the Year contender...
@oliverp it’s just a massive fantasy adventure about some people trying to get worms out their brains. Don’t overthink it and just dive right in. It was my first CRPG and it’s incredible. Possibly my favourite game yet.
@UltimateOtaku91 Please tell me you at least know Baldur's Gate is part of the Dungeons & Dragons IP, right?
Yeah it's always been a licensed IP for anyone who's ever done a D&D game. TSR through the mid-90's, Wizards of the Coast (eventually owned by Hasbro) after.
Not wanting to pay for the D&D license, and deal with the strict constraints of the D&D rulebooks (THAC0 at the time, how many 8/10-sided dice rolls are needed etc) is the reason Bioware created Dragon Age as a spiritual successor to BG.
(Yes, I know the above can be summarized as "NEEERRRRDDD" )
@lst probably because the article clearly states it wants the dev of Rogue Trader to take on the mantle of BG4
@NEStalgia Honestly I didn't know that, I thought maybe it would have had the D&D naming within the games title.
@Johnnycide thanks for the info and heads-up man you just made me want to know more about the game.
@UltimateOtaku91 Yeah, that's a good point, I think the first 2 games did on the box art. And BG1 had the TSR logo, BG2 had the WotC logo. I haven't played 3 yet, but I'd assuming it has the WotC logo in the title splash.
And the originals are tied to the older version rules (To Hit Armor Class 0 (THAC0)) chances, and listed out the 2d10, 1d8 dice roll stats etc. WoTC/TSR requires D&D games to be bound to the actual pen and paper rulebooks. 3 shoudl be no different, it should be current ruleset inside, dice rolls and all.
