MultiVersus, the free-to-play platform fighter from WB Games and Player First Games, makes its grand return today on PS5 and PS4. It's now available to download from PS Store or, if you still have the old version on your console, you'll be able to download the update. Servers are being opened up gradually to prevent network issues.
If you happen to be a member of PS Plus, you'll have access to the MVP Pack 1, which you can claim at no extra cost. This contains a couple of exclusive cosmetics, like the Rare Sparkler Ringout and an Epic Clap Sticker Emote.
The game launched in 2022 as an open beta, and was wildly successful. Over time, however, the game faced growing problems, such as a slowing update cadence and inconsistent net code. Player First Games took the open beta offline in June 2023 in order to make dramatic changes and enhancements — a contentious decision given that many players had already invested in premium battle passes and cosmetics.
We're now on the other side of this situation, with the new and improved MultiVersus now available. Some of the biggest updates to the game include an entire engine change from Unreal 4 to Unreal 5, a new PvE mode called Rifts, rollback net code, myriad tweaks to combat balance including all-new mechanics like parrying, a revamped Perks system, an overhauled battle pass, and more.
On top of all that, three brand new fighters have been added to the roster — Banana Guard, The Joker, and Jason Voorhees — with a fourth, Agent Smith, coming later in Season 1.
All players who complete the game's tutorial will kick off a seven-day reward calendar, which begins with free access to Banana Guard. Returning players who played the open beta will have access to the premium battle pass for free — as long as they log in by 11th June. Whether you log back in by that time or not, you'll also get a set of goodies, including a new costume for Finn. From what we can tell, returning players will also have all their old unlocks and purchases, so you shouldn't have lost anything.
We're looking forward to hopping in and reacquainting ourselves with MultiVersus. Will you be giving it another shot? Tell us in the comments section below.

Hopefully the game doesn't get brought down by it's business model cos the devs clearly brought a lot of love to the game, plus they have a near endless supply of characters they can bring in. Freakazoid would be my number 1 choice.
No thank you!
I'm allergic to money sucking Live Service Games.
@Gamer_X good thing u don't have to spend a dime
I want to try the beta back in 2022, but they region block it.
Can't get the premium battle pass for free.
Still, I'm gonna try it tonight.
No matter what happens, this game will be a case study.
@Gamer_X I would rather the base game be free than what's happened with Tekken8 since release - that was such a kick in the teeth and I've not played since (yet) as the game makes me feel sleezy
@AdamNovice Freakazoid would be siiiiick!
@Slayer25c : Nothing is free in this world, you either end up paying for the product one way or another or you become the product by serving as a guinea pig in beta testing their "free to play" products.
Which one are you? the one that keeps paying or the guinea pig?
Bugs is looking more like a hyperkinetic rabbity thing than his usual self.
The open beta was flawed but fun and the updated mechanics and new features sound good, will give this a go later
@Gamer_X So dramatic,lmao.
I absolutely loved the beta, but man, they slowed the speed of the game down significantly now.
I am not sure if I like it not, it feels kinda sluggish
@Gamer_X It's not that deep
Will give props in saying there's way more content including SP content and it feels better to play but its still really grindy, it has endless currencies and it really pushes you to spend unless you want to spend hours upon hours just to unlock the Joker. Kinda annoying as i can see a great game here its just WB's greed had really tainted it.
@Gamer_X Like someone mentioned this is better (F2P model) for fighters than what Tekken 8 did which was/is $70 and still morphed into a live service game with season passes. Also I would rather WB have games like this as live service and leave the single player games/studios alone.
@Juanalf : Live Service games are a slippery slope for the industry, you say "better have games like this as live service and leave the single player games/studios alone." but there's no stopping on where publishers are willing to draw a line, sadly any LIVE-SERVICE game success is and will be used on any franchise the more people support it.
It's business 101.
Not long ago 99% of most gamers were against pay-to-unlock content, but those same people are now embracing LIVE-SERVICE games which technically is the same model just with a different name... yes they make it look like you can have fun with the base game and not buy anything but how much fun can you possibly have with a game that its "cool" content is locked behind a paywall?
One way or another people cave into the additional purchases.
