Square Enix has confirmed in a new medium-term business plan that it intends to "aggressively" pursue a multiplatform strategy across PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, and PC platforms. Instead of allowing select AAA games from its biggest series to be locked onto one system, the company will look to "build an environment where more customers can enjoy our titles".
It then goes on to say the publisher will "strive to maximise the acquisition of new users when launching a title and that of recurring users after starting management of game operation". It's all based on a plan incorporating four pillars: new initiatives for stability, enhancing productivity, diversifying earnings opportunities, and a balance between shareholder return and growth investment. Collectively, the idea is to "shift from quantity to quality and evolve to deliver a variety of contents that ensure 'Fun' all over the world".
For some time now, there's been no reliable formula for Square Enix releases, with its games launching on different combinations of platforms. Sometimes based on exclusivity deals, Final Fantasy XVI first released only on PS5, with a PC version expected in the future. The same can be said of the Final Fantasy VII Remake project, though this year's Rebirth may take a few years to hit the platform. Other times, the reasoning hasn't been quite as obvious. The original Octopath Traveler debuted on Nintendo Switch and was then later ported to PC and Xbox One. Its sequel then targeted PS5, PS4 alongside Switch and PC, but skipped Xbox platforms.
It's unlikely this change in strategy will affect business dealings already in place β such as the third and final Fantasy VII Remake game β but apart from them, it seems Square Enix games will be made available on as many game platforms as possible.

Well I can understand PC and NS as they sell games, unless xbox is throwing money at day one gamepass, but that would be unlikely right now
Square Enix has been messy about where it releases games for ages. I believe FF7 Remake and Kingdom Hearts aren't on Steam for example.
It's not really a massive surprise they'd want to tighten all that up.
FF7 Rebirth not selling as well as Remake must have a lot to do with this.
It's about time.
Honestly seems like a good idea, square constantly whines about bot meet sales expectations and this seems like the easiest way to increase sales.
I'm also interested in seeing how well jrpgs sell on xbox now that p3 had a big marketing push there.
You want to tell me that PlayStation is just not enough in year 2024?
Colour me shocked
Makes sense. If it's not a Playstation franchise, I see no reason why it should be exclusive.
This is absolutely fine of course.
I do think some of those exclusivity deals done with Playstation, there is a potential that Square calculated that the money lost from not launching on Xbox was low enough that Sonys exclusivity cheque either covered it or straight up was worth more to them than the added players.
But I think all of these games should be multi-plat, even if the Xbox version is just serving one person
Seems like the way forward. If they could somehow make the next FF (or already released games) run on Switch, I think it'd sell from decently to great.
Whatever they do, I bet they still wonβt be happy with the sales they get. It seems like they have unrealistic expectations for everything they release.
I hope we get FF7R, FF7R2 and FF16 on Switch 2
Relishing AAA games on ps5 with only 50m user base was a very bad decision, they should at least made a pc release 6m later.
@get2sammyb FF7R is on Steam but it released earlier on Epic Games Store
All KH games still arent on Steam though
@mariomaster96 Considering how poorly FF16 already runs on a PS5, I don't even want to contemplate the potential state of a Switch 2 version.
@get2sammyb I'm pretty sure FF7 Remake has always been on Steam (as long as the PC version existed, that is). Kingdom Hearts seems to be Epic only though.
I'd still expect FF7 R3 to be a (timed) PlayStation exclusive but yeah, probably less of that in the future.
Because a release on Xbox and Switch would have saved Forspoken. π
Those extra 1000 sales on xbox will be a big help π.
Seriously though if they want their games to sell on more consoles then they will have to scale back the quality so that they run on Nintendo's hardware, as that's where most of the sales will reside.
What will be interesting to see is if Square Enix put games onto gamepass day one which would surely aggrevate the fanbase they've built up over the last few years.
About damn time!
Now we don't have to wait for PC versions.
Unfortunately ps5 isn't seling like hotcakes right now and sony is the one to blame. So many crossovers with ps4 and remakes-remasters, porting to PC better versions of their exclusives, the list goes on. Developers will shift to multiplatform and pc cause their consoles sales are mediocre at best. All the above raise questions about consoles and playstation as a hardware brand.
Well Bandai Namco just released the platform split for Tekken 8 and it was -
So as you can see Xbox is inconsequential at this point.
They'll benefit from PC and Nintendo though.
Target: Switch 2.
It's a good move for Square, a step back for PS5.
@MrMagic it's because the vast majority of xbox players own an xbox for one thing only..... Gamepass. They have the mentality of not buying games on release due to waiting to see if they go to gamepass or some users just use their xbox as a secondary console for gamepass games and will buy the big releases that aren't on gamepass on their preferred platform instead.
Well we may be saying goodbye to those PS5 exclusives⦠but Sqeenix will be saying goodbye to those exclusivity cheques in the hope that the sales on Xbox will eclipse that value. And when considering the sales figures of games on Xbox, there are certainly no guarantees.
Final Fantasy vii remake will most likely remain locked on Playstation but will also release on PC. Those deals will remain in place. What will be interesting is the rumoured remake of IX.
They always should have released a PC version at the same time. I can see why they want to target switch 2 although it remains to see how powerful that console will be.
@Old_Man_Harper Exactly, the Tomb Raider reboot series sold a good number of copies, like for example the first one sold around 8 million and they were still not happy with those numbers. They are definitely delusional
@UltimateOtaku91 Yeah it is no surprise Christopher Dring said that developers are already questioning whether it is worth it to port to Xbox. PC & Nintendo are big markets though and at least they buy games.
Nice. Now release Octopath Traveler and Bravely Default 2 on PS5
Honestly, this is for the best. I've played on PlayStation for the majority of my life, but I couldn't care less about the exclusivity ending. Sqaure Enix clearly need the funds and I think everyone should have the chance to play their IPs.
Thats fine. (timed) Exclusives are only interesting for shareholders. Im not gaining anything if the other side can't play. If everything is multiplatform they would have to go all out on the consoles itself.
I'm behind square Enix wherever they release their games. Sony and Microsoft have made the most unnecessary gen while PC is the way to go now with the growth of pc handhelds, so I'll be heading more and more over there where I'm not locked into some ecosystem.
Multiplatform is better for game companies and players both, when it comes to big franchises the funds provided by a single platform holder hardly make up for being able to sell their games to up to 4 different, big playerbases.
I think it's a good thing honestly.
No one on Xbox buys games though because of "muh Gamepass".
@Lethal_Equo you think it's the easiest way to meet sales expectations but it's square enix we're talking about. now they will just have higher sales expectations
Finally everyone will be able to enjoy these amazing adventures.
@Frmknst what the hell does this have to do with the death of consoles?
Given how poorly the majority of Square titles sell, I doubt Sony is losing sleep over this.
Xbox will basically be a money pit to release either full priced releases on there (that their player base won't pay out for) or devaluing other platform sales by releasing on GP. Xbox has essentially cultivated a low value prospect for big third party publishers now, imo.
Cool, I hope FF gets the attention it deserves in the future with multi-plat releases because it deserves all the praise it's been receiving lately.
If Square is not bought, they may actually go under. Their games don't sell. FF7 part 2 is doing horrible. Putting it on PC and Xbox ( it can't run on Switch) would not have mattered. Mainstream audiences are not buying what Square is selling.
@TheFakulty Sony users ain't exactly buying those games too! Foam stars, Babylon fall, forspoken. FF16 sold 3 million in one week which is good but that's 3m from a potential 50 million!
@Toot1st Nobody is buying Square games.
@saffeqwe I definetly wouldn't be surpirsed if square just started demanding even higher sales numbers to make up for the extra work of porting games to other platforms.
As long as they keep making small weird titles like Paranormasight this is great news. AAA development is floundering right now.
@Ainu20 Nintendo systems really are not for you if you think FFXVI runs terribly. π
Cool, now I can finally sell my PS5 since the only games I have are Final Fantasy 16 and 7 Rebirth!!
On a more serious note, I also have some other games but I got them in PS4 and upgraded them like Resident Evil 4 and Horizon Forbidden West but PS5 is a Final Fantasy machine, but I could live without it if I wasn't a HUGE FF fan.
By the way 7 Remake Integrade is on Steam and runs perfectly on my Steam Deck. Still I am sure that Son has already bought the exclusivity of Remake Part 3 to be released on PS6.
By the way FF has an audience in PC, 16 and Rebirth will sell well on Steam if the ports are good.
Yes yes, this is the obvious way forward but where is Final Fantasy XIII on modern PlayStations.
@koffing They said they plan to focus their studios to collaborate more on big games. So say good bye to seeing smaller titles. All major devs are going to drop smaller titles soon by the looks of it.
@Nem I didn't say terribly, but poorly, which I don't think is an exaggeration. I do own a Switch by the way, so I'm well accustomed to games that don't run great all the time.
But the idea of FF16 on a Switch 2, well, that goes well beyond just running poorly!
@UltimateOtaku91 I really don't want Square Enix to downscale their vision on Final Fantasy just to have it run in Nintendo's underpowered hardware. I get why it could make sense from a business perspective though.
Square has an identity crisis. They do not know what they want their franchises to be. The major reason for Yakuza and Persona exploding is because they've grown more comfortable in what they are and build on it. Ever since FFX, the franchise has not had a identity and Square hasn't had one either.
Also SE puts their games on sale so often that only a fool buys them full price (I am a fool)
@Ainu20 I'm sure it would, but FFXVI doesn't run as poorly as you make it sound. It was perfectly fine. I beat the game and didn't notice any issues.
When a game runs poorly on switch it is clearly noticeable. It drops to 20 fps or worse.
I did pick performance mode on FF though.
Goodbye to those PS5 exclusives
And then they're going to push the sales goalpost to 20 million copies per game and be disappointed when it doesn't reach that.
Square Enix is its own worst enemy.
@pushL7 Yeah, I think the pandemic carried the sales of FF7R. Now people can just wait for it to come on PC.
On its nose of course this is a fine idea. My only issue with it is that the Switch and I'm assuming it's successor will be so underpowered compared to the competition for PS and PC, that inevitably there games will be kneecapped by Nintendo's weaker system.
Ff15 was out on everything thing, and the tomb raider games , and avengers and they still weren't happy with sales, and they won't be again when the next final fantasy releases on everything and no one buys it on Xbox because they're waiting for gamespass release.
SE just needs to release their games arent as popular today
@Anthony_Daniels They need to cut budgets. FFXV Needed 10 million units sold to breakeven. That is an insane amount of money.
More than that you cannot see that money on screen.
Kinda too little too late unless they're internally talking about just PC and Switch, because Xbox is dead now.
Hopefully gunna get pixel remasters on Xbox then π€£ ffvi was easy the best for me loved it on ps1
People still buy games on Xbox its not like there aren't sales on it just coz there's lessπ€£ every sale counts towards it been profitable
This is how it always should have been.
Playstation gamers have missed out on Square Enix games also with games like Bravely Default, Harvestella, Dragon Quest Monsters and Treasures, Octopath Traveler 1 and Paranormasight. But people seem to not mention those as it doesn't suit their narrative, but hopefully playstation now gets those titles or future sequels going forward.
They finally wised up. This is good news. I was sick of them telling us that their games didn't meet expectations yet they made the poor decision to put it on just one platform.
Nintendo and PC makes sense, but don't think they can expects many sales from Xbox unless they get a check for game pass which might not happen anymore
@MrMagic
Source on that? Wanna check to see if it happens with other games too.
They'll release games everywhere but Xbox unless Microsoft pays them to put their games on Game Pass. The reality is they would be very unlikely to sell enough units on Xbox to justify the porting costs.
They're most likely talking about PC and Nintendo, since Xbox isn't going to be a platform after this gen anyway.
Feels like Square should have just done that from the start.
@UltimateOtaku91 thank you, finally someone who mentions that. Everyone only see FF XVI and FF7 remake, both wich Sony also funded. There are a lot of other titles that didn't see the light on a Playstation console.
I feel Square -enix will never be happy though. Like others have said if a games goes multiplatform they will most likely want to see double or triple sales from that title. I would like to see that square goes back to also make smaller games like the bouncer or ehrgeiz.
@SamMR First Tomb Raider like the 2013 one? It didn't sell 8 million, it sold 3M across multiple platforms. Rise then released on xb on pc which flopped on xb selling 300k copies while it did better on PC and then PS4 later.
@breakneck didn't P3 Reload went on sale a month after release? lol
This makes sense to me. Locking expensive AAA games to one platform seems unwise, even if that publisher pays a hefty exclusivity deal. Is it enough to cover lost sales from other platforms?
This would likely cost more in development up front, as the teams would need to make the games work everywhere, whereas launching on PlayStation alone limits working on IO, user interface, so on.
@MrMagic it isn't though. But nice of you to come to that conclusion from the statistics of 1 game π
Kool more money should make higher quality content
Always give me a giggle the amount gamepass hate on push square π
@Martijn87 I read that FF9 Remake started for Switch but is moved to PS and xb. Though I think it will be a multiplatform release.
@UltimateOtaku91 It definitely applies in a number of ways. Like you say, there are a bunch of Nintendo-only Square Enix games that probably would have found audiences on PS5/PS4.
And as I mentioned earlier, Kingdom Hearts isn't even on Steam.
Obviously the recent Final Fantasy timed exclusives are very high profile, but even then, Square Enix didn't have ports ready to release once Sony's money hat expired.
@UltimateOtaku91 A Game Pass deal would be the best way to approach the Xbox market but it seems unlikely
@tangyzesty their relative quality peaked on Super Nintendo and personal quality peaked on PS1, itβs been downhill since and I think trying to reach a wider audience than just PS users might improve the brand quality in general of certain IPs like FF
It seems the Final Fantasy Rebirth poor sales performance on PS5 rumor was all true after all.
Square Enix is simply out of touch, there were big at PS1 and PS2 era's now they are niche just like Atlus or Nippon Ichi,no amount ports will save them. They need change and fast, make old school FF game with stylised graphics and it will be good start but knowing what idiots work there it won't be enough, get Sakaguchi back because it's very clear things went downhill when he left.
@fancy_bandage_PSN after the merger with enix it went down. They are good games, but they never reached the peaks of the SNES, PSone and early PS2 days.
Has anything really changed for PS gamers though? Probably only positively in terms of getting Switch games. SE will just port to systems where the cost of said port is warranted by the likely sales and that will include PlayStation.
@Zenos Depends where you look I guess. If you frequent sites like Reddit, Gamefaqs or even Push Square then yeah, there is a lot of negativity because that's what those sites feed off of. You only need to look at aggregate score sites like Opencritic to see how highly praised Rebirth is. It has scores comparable to the Witcher and Baldurs Gate and in my opinion deserves to stand with them as an all time great too.
@pushsquare a correction but Octopath Traveller 2 is confirmed to be coming to Xbox sometime this year. So⦠only PS will not have the original so far.
So Forspoken 2 will release on Xbox as well, then
That's really promising for Switch 2 3rd party support. Hopefully we see a situation where the Playstation Showcase has stuff like Octopath 1 and Triangle Strategy meanwhile the Switch 2 reveal has stuff like Remake/Rebirth/FF16.
Going Multiplatform is an excellent decision, widen your audience. Bring in more money and it might result in better games.
@ThroughTheIris56 You do know that Sony has been covering the bills for promotions and marketing materials for any Square's games that are PS Exclusives right?
They should just say, being profitable isnβt enough, they need ALL THE PROFITS, ALL THE MONEY!!!
Thats why exclusives are dying and everyone is chasing GaaS.
Does this mean that the FFXIII trilogy will finally be playable on modern PlayStation consoles?
Also Switch exclusives, right? Either way, no big deal as long as it isnβt just tied to XBox.
@Strikke Did it? Because in Asia it only went on sale in April. So if it did it was probably only in EU/America regions.
I have like almost 500 games on my Xbox so I do buy games.
Will I buy Square Enix games? It depends. I want the FF Pixel Remaster but I don't care about anything FF7-related.
What a miracle, a third party publisher decided to finally consider third party publishing rather than shopping a platform holding sugar daddy to fund each game individually...... It's a revolution in business models!
@tangyzesty Xbox already confirmed next gen hardware, and is strongly hinting at a handheld.....so they're still going to be a factor for another 7-10 years, even if they really do end up pulling the plug, it's not overnight. My own thinking is still that they're going to merge console into PC with the rise of PC handhelds and the like, a fully PC console with a custom launcher and all makes a lot of sense, and if that's their direction they can do that indefinitely even if it's low sales, and publishers just need to make PC games and it'll run on the box.
I mean I get it, I'm at a point myself as an all platforms customer where I'm debating switching out the XB as my default 3rd party platform for PC or switch to all PS, due to uncertainty about the platform's future, but convenience and economics of the switch still has me debating. There's definitely uncertainty and concern, but the echo chamber disinformation, even if the real information isn't rosy, is grating.
Maybe in 2034 there won't be Xbox hardware. Maybe there will, but between now and then, there will be, and any publisher that doesn't want to miss out on market still needs to be there.
@Colt22 They just need to slash their budgets and stop trying to target "mainstream." Square has a dedicated market that most companies would kill to have. They simply budget with the expectation they have a market that's much bigger than the one they have and it leads to "failure." If they budgeted appropriately for the size of their actual market, they'd be rolling in money.
Technically that seems to be the same problem Sony itself is having. Spending more than they can realistically make back despite a rabidly loyal dedicated customer base.
@Th3solution You laugh, but if even if only a few people bought it on Xbox it would have doubled sales numbers.
Thrilled about the quality over quantity mindset- what I hope is that at some point in my lifetime they remember they have incredible dormant IPβs they can mine from- Parasite Eve (ripe for a remake), Xenogears, FF Tactics, Vagrant Story, Einhander, Chrono series, Brave Fencer Musashiβ¦ their catalogue on psone is what made me fall in love with gaming in the first place - I remember a Square ad in a magazine during this golden era saying βpick a world, weβll take you there.β Give me that again !
@Grumblevolcano Exactly how powerful do you think their next "handheld" is going to be to run FF16 and Rebirth?
Just as long g as you don't need a pesky account. π, seriously, this is good news. Buy the console you like, not the console you need in my opinion. MSX/Speccy 48k/C64 days had it right all along.
If PlayStation itself is not seeing the benefit of keeping games exclusives why would anyone else? Times are changing and exclusives no longer have the same effect they once did, well for anyone other than Nintendo.
I can understand adding PC, but they are maybe -
1. Completely underestimating the % of extra sales they gain with "PS5 Console Exclusive" - just those words on the advertising really raises a games profile for a lot of people.
2. Completely overestimating how many xbox sales they will get, as there are a number of series owners who will buy nothing (except their Game Pass subscription).
(I understand the switch/PS5 arguments but these are very different in terms of power - maybe this works, maybe not).
Doesn't effect me in the slightest. Don't play there games really anyways.
@get2sammyb Yeah will be interesting to see who Sony and Nintendo go to now for third party exclusives as that's money now freed up.
Where is that Donald Glover good gif when I need it.
Good to see you at least acknowledging Switch has Square Enix exclusives as sires including Pure Xbox seems to ignore such things, yet I can't play Paranormasight on my PS or Xbox.
I also don't believe Square as I look at a Saga Emerald which still skipped Xbox but even on Mobile, that wouldn't be shocked they still miss console's and say things underperform yet realese 34 games in the same year.
@NEStalgia you're absolutely right, if indeed Microsoft/Xbox gets out of the console biz, it won't be overnight. I meant it more from a standpoint of is it a financially wise decision to spend resources porting to a platform with a much smaller user base, where potentially (likely?) the sales might not even justify you bothering to do so in the first place.
Ah, geez. The 12 Xbox players are gonna get access to the games on release now.
@pharos_haven I don't know how powerful but I think it would be like how the Switch had some "miracle" ports of games from the PS4/XB1 era (DOOM 2016, DOOM Eternal, Witcher 3, Nier Automata, etc.).
@tangyzesty I think from Square (or any pulisher's) perspective it's 3fold. Xbox may drop out in 10 years. Or it might not. They don't know any more than we do. And in 10 years Xbox could somehow do something that makes it a sudden hit, and not being there for it woulds hurt. Or Sony could falter on PS6 and it all goes downhill....so it's best to spread out everywhere because you never know what way the winds blow.
Meanwhile even if Xbox gets out of consoles they're still going to be a force to be reckoned with as a storefront on PC so it still pays to be an existing partner and prepared for changes there too.
And finally, even if Xbox-only players are a small number of sales compared to other channels, every Xbox player you sell an FF game to might become a customer of other FF games and KH games etc. Ignoring that part of the market is a total wall blocking growing their IPs and games to more long term potential customers. 1m customers today could buy 10m games over a decade once introduced to it, but if you don't sell the 1m today, those customers buy 0m over the decade. Even "small" markets are markets that can grow into a bigger market if you feed it, especially in media, so taking the cash option to ignore potential customers today, ends up leading to lost future customers in the longer term. In some ways that's the problem they're facing now. They restricted FF to Sony-only for so long, now that PS has had a shift in customers and seems to have less that are interested in Square's games, that association hurt them where a lot of their customers may now be spread over XB, PC, Nintendo.
@pharos_haven It not about how powerful. It about the toolset they offer to make those games run on said hardwareβ¦ Game hardware isnβt about brute strength anymore. The next generation switch will have access to stuff like FSR, DLSS, frame generationβ¦ etc.
I suppose if they go multiplatform they may not get the sony money. But who knows maybe they do better that way.
@MrMagic 7 percent is fine. These games donβt cost as much to port as you think.
@Zenos Most of the market doesn't even know PS Pro is a thing because it only exists as rumors/leaks on fanzines that most PS buyers don't read. It's not an announced product. The enthusiasts that know about or even care about PS pro are mostly made of people that already bought a PS5.
@Rich33 "Completely underestimating the % of extra sales they gain with "PS5 Console Exclusive""
No doubt the PS exclusivity drives a ton of hype with a certain market that also overlaps their own core market heavily, but if the sales figures they've been posting are what they get with "PS exclusive" I think they're mostly preaching to the same choir they already had without those words. Hype doesn't always equate to sales, otherwise Rebirth would be a top seller.
"Completely overestimating how many xbox sales they will get"
Square already has a number of games on Xbox, including Crisis Core and now XIV, so one can hope square is competent enough to extrapolate what their likely sales are on Xbox from the data they already have on games on the platform and determined it's worthwhile. Of course "Square" and "competent" are not words that are complimentary to each other, when it comes to estimating sales.
@Zenos It's an open secret among enthusiasts who read internet things about video games which isn't most of the people that buy consoles, and is mostly people that already have consoles and will upgrade. And even still the majority still buy the base models, not the premium models, so it wouldn't have that big a freeze effect on sales.
The drop in sales mostly just comes down to the larger economy, coupled with no "big" system seller games.
As a primarily PC gamer I hope they really think through Day 1 launches. Consolers, and especially Sony gamers with FF games, provide developers more deference and leeway for performance issues. Both recent FF AAA titles had some rather rough performance for being made in close assistance with Sonyβs experts.
PC gamers are a fickle bunch. When SE inevitably has an even harder time on Day 1 for all the multitude of CPU/GPU/OS versions in play, the PC crowd mercilessly downvote and refund their games en masse. I am a PC gamer mostly so I am not saying this to insult consolers or PC peopleβ¦ just saying its NOT as easy as βput et on Steemz Dey 1 lulzβ
@Zenos @NEStalgia I think it's more about GTA6 than anything else. In 2015 you had stuff like GTAV 360/PS3 updates ending and Black Ops 3 missing out on content so for the typical mainstream player, you knew you needed a PS4 at that point.
This generation has stuck around with last gen for a lot longer than usual. 2025 is the big current gen moment with GTA6 so you'd probably see a spike in hardware sales start this holiday season.
@NEStalgia βTo those in the desert, everything appears like an oasis.β π
But honestly, I wouldnβt be surprised to have seen Forspoken sell better on Xbox. Like you say, couldnβt have been much worse. π
@Decimateh-xblz
Depending on the porting costs, yes.
They can do it for the money sure that Multiplatform provides. But when Valkyrie Elysium was good (PS4/5 only). I am FINALLY getting around to Stranger's Paradise. So it is a quantity problem I know as I usually don't buy Square games but I am now not just because of tactics RPGs/hack n slashes they interest me but out of curiosity. I always knew about them. Have tried a few in the past but now more than ever I'm interested but it doesn't mean I haven't noticed the quality being pretty weak in different spaces and I'll go into that.
But PC/others does help them then however much and exclusive only audience for a period. Sony is doing their thing, Nintendo is. Xbox is trying to make up it's mind on what it wants after many decisions. We either like or hate the direction of first party and buy up third parties that interest us. Enjoy the hardware for different reasons gimmicks, load times, remote play, story, graphics, gameplay, typical gaming.
There is games that do take up a lot of audiences like a Fornite, GTA, sports and so on. But many others are going Indie/AA and don't like certain AAA directions, or the audiences are going so many directions or quality is changing/game design priorities are different it's why I question many Indies nostalgia, not the Indies with unique ideas/spins on existing that I don't question ([even some devs splitting continuing some directions or new ideas they always wanted to but never could with their old studios but having formed new ones I don't question them, I question the newcomers the too into their old favourite trends/games and that's ALL THEY MAKE with more dull or fan game level execution]
safe only popular or dull ideas than 5th gen platformers or racing ever had with far more original ideas or any new ideas people won't bother to come up with) or casual audience games lacking depth or good ideas not just AAA lacking in good game play ideas not just visuals, load times with good or bad programmers and whatever other worlds/eh content to play through due to formats or the execution of said content open world or linear games.
Diofield was half a good game, half lacking depth/story excitement, was multiplatform. The remakes of Front Mission and Tactics Ogre are 'fine'. I can't compare to the originals. I don't have nostalgia for them/wasn't born yet/never seen old copies of SNES/PS1/PSP Tactics Ogre but the way it's executed is odd to me. Front Mission could have changed its' combat for a modern option of hit whatever limps you want and the damage from there besides the randomised but it didn't only graphics or controls or something.
Modern tactics games at least those I started with have less grind or less stupidity of the old days (not bad just not ideal I find. I am fine with many old things but some rock paper scissors is very particularly designed of NES/SNES RPGs and grind) and make the hits/critical better among other mechanics. Multiplatform (unless Front Mission was Switch only but I think going to PS5 at some point? Or 2 is Switch or something).
The Square internal teams make better games (quality at least or gameplay variety, in terms of authentics of remakes I can't question that but in terms of quality still) than any of the studios games they published of Diofield or Foamstars those lack depth or quality in areas, Foamstars was business model first and had 2 modes at launch, I came up with more ideas from oil, foam contest, reverse maze, traps, surfboard racing at the announcement trailer, they just suck at making a game XD (beside well Valkyrie Elysium/Strangers of Paradise because they are already good teams anyways Team Ninja or Soleil).
I am not usually into Square titles but exploring a handful the past few years I haven't noticed much. No didn't buy FF7 Remake/Rebirth or FF16. I played the minigames to help someone but that's it. I've seen enough of those games story and gameplay/having conversations about them with the same people on the game (as new to FF7 all of us) to know the good, the bad, the in-between quality of them.
The quality shows. Balan is what it is but even then I got my time with it for $20 new and enjoyed the it had even if it has issues and I got my Rayman 3 suit game that's all I wanted it for and it delivered on that somewhat of quality, I knew it would flop. I wasn't paying full price for it.
@Grumblevolcano Yeah GTA6 will drive the market hard. I don't know if that's a good or bad thing though. One soul consuming game devouring the market probably means everything else suffers but hardware sells.
Though I still can't understand why the heck that series is sooo powerful. I honestly don't think it's all that special. I does, but I don't get it.
@NEStalgia
Totally agree that the Hype train doesnt always lead to massive sales, but in rebirths case I think there were a lot of reasons including -
1. It was a part 2 of 3.
2. Splitting the original into a trilogy in the first place didnt do them any favours possibly.
3. The new direction of remake (compared to the original) alienated part of the userbase.
4. (And I count myself in this group) Remake just didnt feel that special.
5. Graphics (particularly Performance mode) had quite a lot of negative press around launch.
However, in the case of new titles particularly, I still think "PS5 Console Exclusive" helps to get the hype train rolling - something the name "square enix" doesnt do that well any longer imo.
Read one of your later comments RE GTA series, and I quite agree - I have never thought the games as anything more than distinctly average (in fact i thought some of the saints row games (1-3) were better examples of the genre - even if they started out by copying fundamentals from GTA!).
@TrickyDicky99 That's weird Nintendo had 9 exclusives from SE, Sony had 6 and the rest were multiplats.
@NEStalgia so how much did Crisis Core do on xb? it did Ok on PS, Switch and PC as well I believe.
@Radekbejbl1 "get Sakaguchi back because it's very clear things went downhill when he left." I respect the man but when he made FF The Spirits Within, a movie I liked but tanked at the box office that almost caused Squaresoft to go bankrupt which is why they merged with Enix(also thanks to the success of KH1 and I think it was FFX at that time)
And Sakaguchi is happy with where he is now why ask him to come back? Still waiting for that Terra Battle console port which reached the milestone on his kickstarter btw, o wait, he took the money and ran lol
and since no journo would ever report it as they really want to slant the Sony SE relationship, even though Nintendo had more exclusive deals to SE than Sony:
"In the HD (High-Definition) sub-segment, consolidated net sales increased compared with the previous fiscal year due to the release of titles including βFINAL FANTASY XVI,β βFINAL FANTASY PIXEL REMASTER,β βDRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince,β and βFINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH.β
On the sales front it was actually "YoY decline in MMO and Games for Smart Devices/PC Browser sub-segment sales", plus "weak performances by existing titles" that brought things down, NOT the big new HD titles.
Final Fantasy 14 in particular, saw a "notable decline in MMO revenues, which were down -11% year over year".
Overall FY results:
Important to note that whilst operating income is down, SE's still profitable. The way some talk is as if they're not making profit at all.
Again, SE attributes the decline in operating income to;
So despite the sales of the bigger new titles being enough to meet SE's "expectations" and marginally increase YoY sales, the decline in sales elsewhere, plus higher associated costs across all production inc the big titles, still contributed to a decline in overall operating income.
Next is the -70% profit number some are touting. This is net profit or "profit attributable to owners", which includes additional costs.
The biggest reason net profit is down so much is predominantly as SE cancelled a bunch of projects, leading to a unique "extraordinary loss".
"Profit attributable to owners of the parent amounted to Β₯14,912 million, ($95.5m) a decrease of 69.7% from the prior fiscal year, partly due to the recognition of Β₯22,087 million ($141.4m) in losses on disposal of content as an extraordinary loss."
Had it not been for these project cancellations, the net profit would have been Β₯37,000 million ($237m), making for a YoY decline of -10% instead of this big -70% number, which was mostly project cancellations.
So what's the takeaway?
It's that overall sales are up and SE is still profitable, in part due to the big new titles."
@zhoont yet the 56 million players on PS didnβt buy enough of FF without a service to make the games go there. Goes both ways. Apparently PS players donβt always buy their games or this donβt happen.
Get more games on PC Square, specifically on Steam. I legit want Kingdom Hearts on Steam, and I don't plan on playing Rebirth until it releases on Steam.
@Strikke Crisis core is a weird one, I think something like 75% sales were on PS, which is atypical for a game on switch and PC, let alone Xbox, but it's a prequel to a trilogy available (at the time) only on ps. I don't think even switch broke 20%.
@Rich33 Yeah I agree all around. I get flamed any time I bring up those reasons for rebirth for some reason π
@Lup same here π
@HonestHick that's what iv always thought people say people dont Buy games on Xbox but ps (with not sure exactly but isn't it 2.5 or 3 times bigger user base) still not having enough sales surely means they don't either π€£π
To be honest, it's weird it even lasted this long.
God of War, The Last of Us, Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter, THOSE are "Sony exclusives" to me. Let other people play Final Fantasy.
@The_Wailing_Doom it's doesn't cost much to port though does it? I thought once game was made for whatever console porting it was peanuts compared to what they've already done isn't it? Maybe I'm wrong though π€£ also arnt pc Xbox similar I read somewhere they were so if porting to pc Xbox should be easy too? Just what iv read somewhere like
I can't imagine it does cost that much to port since the consoles are as similar with each other as they are with PC now, so it's never been easier. However, there are lots of games out there that go to PlayStation and developers forego an Xbox version by choice (i.e. without PlayStation signing any exclusivity). That is because they don't believe making a port is worth the investment. Even if they do manage to make some profit from Xbox sales, they likely have determined their resources are better spent working on the next game or whatever.
They (SE) can try but the result will be the same. Their games cant run on Nintendo Switch and Xbox gamers don't even buy games anymore especially JRPGs. Just compare the sales of all the multiplatform SE games. In the end, the majority of their sales will come from PlayStation and PC just like now. And they will wonder why didn't their sales triple with two more platforms. The problem lies elsewhere.
The problem is that their games are often terrible, sometimes great, but mostly middling. They just cannot seem to evolve their games in the right direction even though they want to. They have developed tunnel vision where they have become fixated/obsessed with cutting-edge visuals and action combat. Those are NOT the things that make a great RPG.
RPGs need great writing in terms of both story and characters. They need a great soundtrack to make them pleasant to play and remember even after you turn them off. They need character and gear customization with build potential so players can play how they want (stealth, magic, physical, ailments, etc). They need fun, engaging, and rewarding side quests and activities that people can lose themselves in for hours willingly. Finally, they need some kind of player agency and choices when it comes to moral/ethical choices, important plot points, and fates of characters. Why cant SE figure this out is beyond me.
@OneWingedAngel "they need some kind of player agency and choices when it comes to moral/ethical choices, important plot points, and fates of characters." I think these were in some of their smaller titles.
