It looked fantastic in its new release date trailer, but we're sure that some of the excitement surrounding Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake will be dampened when people realise how much it's going to cost. As per the PS Store, the upcoming remake is priced at a rather eye-watering $60 / £60 on PS5.
We've grown used to remakes of classic games being cheaper than your typical blockbuster, but Square Enix clearly thinks that the revival of this classic RPG is worth the big bucks. We really are left wondering how many potential buyers will simply wait for a sale upon hearing this news.
And for what it's worth, Dragon Quest 3 — like most of the older games in the series — is not some kind of 100-hour epic. It takes around 30 hours or so to reach the credits.
What do you make of this? Is Square Enix taking the p*ss? Close your wallet in the comments section below.

I expected this to be a $60 game. Not really surprised here.
It's a full remake.
Did people really think it wouldn't be $59.99?
I suppose Live-A-Live was priced at $49.99, but that's not the norm.
EDIT: And since when is game price determined by campaign length? I'm guessing y'all wouldn't balk at $69.99 for an Uncharted game on PS5.
One of the best announcements. Return of the king!!!
@Ralizah Trials of Mana was a full remake as well, and a 3D one at that. Still fairly pricey at £45, but that's honestly the price point I would have expected for this kind of remake.
I'm so ready for this and I really love that they announced I&II remake shortly after. That artwork was beautiful btw
Pretty sure that the standard price for PS games is £60 now usually anyway so no surprise really
@ShogunRok True.
Maybe it's dependent on the IP. The Mana series was out of commission for a long time, so they might have thought it made sense to price it more conservatively since they weren't sure how it would perform.
PS1 games were 60 quid back in the day. And I was paid less than third what I get now.
I would have expected the £40 to £45 mark. £60 is more than I expected, given these tend to aim for the third party Switch prices rather than AAA PS5 prices.
@Ralizah Yeah, I'd guess Square Enix sees Dragon Quest as a 'premium' IP regardless of the release.
This remake clearly took longer to develop than expected, too. I wonder if there was a decision to ramp the price up in order to make the budget back.
Sir. It's Dragon Quest, one of SE holy trinity. Of course they will charge $60.
Worth it. This is a GOAT game.
This game could cost $100.00 and I’d still buy it day one.
@ShogunRok I recall an article a while back on one of the sister sites that talked about how the HD-2D titles cost way more to develop than people think they do. And yeah, with a long production time, Squeenix could be looking to make back as much as they can on it.
Based on footage, though, the time and care this took were worth it. This is the most spectacular implementation of that technology to date.
Let’s also hope Square Enix won’t be disappointed by the sales of this game, but who am I kidding, they will be.
Day 1. I want to play these games on PS and not switch. Buying to show that
@ShogunRok Look on the bright side, the Final Fantasy 7 remake will cost ya nearly $200, and it looks like DQ HD-2D parts 1 & 2 will be a bundle for $60, so that's 3 full games for les than 2/3 the price of one FF7. 😉
I feel like all of the HD-2D games on Switch have been full price, even before they were called that w/ games like Bravely Default on 3DS, so I don't know why anyone would be surprised a full JRPG wouldn't be $60. Plus isn't $60 a discount over the normal PS5 $70 game price? 🤷♂️
Personally most of the Switch JRPG games look like 3DS games to me and none of them should be priced more than $40 like handheld games cost but that's just me, I'm a graphics snob, and Switch games cost $60. 🤑
Edit: Oh and these are priced for Japan, where they will sell b/c DQ, so maybe they'll go on sale quickly in the West?
Pass on that then.
The most confusing part of the increase to $70 games this generation is that almost 4 years later it's still not clear if a full priced game is $60 or $70.
I realise it's a full remake, but I thought would be a bit less to be honest. Will likely wait till it's nearer £39.99.
Not shocked. Still getting it.
@ShogunRok Considering the phenomenal sales of Rebirth at $70 for a somewhat more large scale modern remake, I expect his price point will be highly successful at $10 less for a pixel remaster.
Worth it to me.
It's unfair to judge the game based on length (as long as it is not as short as RE3). Otherwise, Spider-Man 2 only takes less than 20 hours to beat and around 25 hours for platinum.
I don't mind that price and 30 hours to complete is music to my ears as I'm kinda burnt out on 50-100 hour games.
@LowDefAl I know what I paid I. Toys R Us. You can believe what you like. There was no Amazon or mobile phones either. And I had to use a map for weekenders from Pompey to Yorkshire if there was a traffic jam.
It looks absolutely gorgeous and like an awful lot of care and attention has gone into making it. The price of a game has never correlated to its length and nor should it.
Man this game is gonna sell like bonkers
What a nonsense article.
Since when is game length a determining factor in pricing it?
It's a full on remake (and not a single game sliced up into three, more costly parts, which you don't seem to have an issue with), what did you expect?
Nope, not gonna pay that. HUGE DQ fan here but I have a brain too. I only pay that price tag for a BRAND NEW 3D adventure period. Sale or nothing for me.
Square Enix are always delusional. The collector's edition is £190 and the main thing there to justify that price is a set of acrylic stands.
Looks great! I will definitely be picking it up (actually downloading it) right away. Dragon Quest games are always day one purchases for me.
@Slippship
60 quid for ps1 games?
Memory is a bit fuzzy for that far back but can't remember them being that expensive. Sounds like you were getting robbed!
@Slippship I never paid more than £49.99 for ps1 games day 1..I can't remember any ps1 game being more than £50 unless you were buying import copies (resident evil was around £70 for the jap import) but they were extremely rare instances.
@Northern_munkey @Northern_munkey however much they were 49.99 in 97 vs 60 in 2024 isn't bad inflation.
@Slippship that wasn't the point..ps1 games were never £60 unless you were getting fleeced.
@Northern_munkey I just remember PS1 games being a lot more at the start and then somehow ps2 dropped to around 35. There were only a few places to buy originally like toys r us and curry's. It was still niche before the likes of Game. If you want to keep saying I paid too much carry on but I know, I bought my ps1 in toys r us and tekken , discworld, which I still have and is worth more now, and destruction Derby. It nearly spent me out but my amiga days were officially over.
Ridiculous price for a remake of a 2.5D game. This isn’t Demon Souls or Silent Hill.
No *****? Why wouldn’t it be?
Looks great and totally worth it for me. Not so for everyone then wait for a sale.
It looks amazing, so seems like a fair price to me.
Don't know how people are justifying this in the comments?
£60-70 is modern AAA game pricing
This should be in the £40-50 range
Unfortunately I'll be waiting for a price drop on this.
I think the price is fair especially with it being in the new style that octopath has been done in. Game length aside there's plenty of games SHORTER than 30hrs that were $60 to $70. I think the fans of the series will still support especially since it's not just a mere port.
I'll buy the physical switch cartridge since it's usually cheaper in my country. For example, zelda totk is $47 here instead $70.
It's $45 off playasia, and free shipping over $99, so happy hunting!
