Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree currently holds the highest Metacritic score of any DLC ever released, with a rating of 95. That's for the PS5 version, which is the platform with the most critic reviews. The huge score means it is even better rated than other expansions released over the years, like both The Witcher 3 DLCs and Grand Theft Auto IV.
Here's a selection of some of the highest-rated expansions and how they compare to Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree on Metacritic in rating order:
- Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree — 95
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Blood & Wine — 92
- Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost and Damned — 90
- Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty — 89
- Dark Souls: Artorias of the Abyss — 89
- Grand Theft Auto IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony — 89
- Bloodborne: The Old Hunters — 87
- Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare — 87
- The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - Shivering Isles — 86
As you can tell from the comparisons, not only is Shadow of the Erdtree the highest-rated DLC ever made, it is also very comfortably the most well-received when stacked against other FromSoftware expansions. The piece of content that rivals it closest would be the Dark Souls DLC Artorias of the Abyss, but its score of 89 is based on just seven verdicts.
In our own Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree PS5 review, we awarded an 8/10 rating and praised its new environments and rewarding exploration, while warning the expansion can feel a tad too familiar at times. "By doubling down on what made the base game so sublime, FromSoftware has crafted an Elden Ring expansion that's just as great as it is familiar," we explained. "Shadow of the Erdtree delivers more of the same style of content you loved two years ago rather than introducing new ways to engage. That's enough to consider it a fantastic expansion, though it's hard not to feel like you're just going through the motions again."

higher than blood and wine is crazy, that expansion is incredible. friday cannot come soon enough
The wait for Friday is torture. From just never miss, its hit after hit after hit with them.
As much as I wouldn’t mind playing this DLC, I just don’t have it in me anymore due to being inactive for a long time. I beat the game when it first released, got a quarter of the way through NG+, but I have lost all of my reflexes and knowledge of where I’m at. And having to find/defeat Mohg again in order to start the DLC would just be way too time consuming for me. I’ve accepted that I’ll more than likely never play this, and I’m okay with that.
@Kraven that’s where I’m at with it too. I’m excited it’s as good as it is for everyone (not that I’m surprised), but I haven’t played it since I beat it at release and I don’t think I beat Mohg, so to go back, relearn the game, and fight him just sounds daunting. Not to mention, I don’t have the time to sink 30+ hours into this, unless I’m sacrificing other games I’d rather play more.
No way is the Dark Souls DLC better than Bloodborne's The Old Hunters
If it's higher than The Old Hunters then it must be truly special 🤯
The DLC rating higher then Blood and Wine is crazy, that DLC was fantastic.
I'll get Eldy Ring and the DLC sometime in the future.
@Odium I agree wholeheartedly. It’s crazy to think about. I have the Platinum trophy for Bloodborne and Elden Ring, but I really dislike how inaccessible their DLC is.
@Kanji-Tatsumi perhaps depends when you were reviewing it. The original Dark Souls DLC is a bigger improvement over the base game than the old hunters is for Bloodborne.
All From DLC has been superb though
Beautiful! Waiting at Mohg's Palace.
I'm so looking forward to this but its been so hard to get back into the game and i think it might be due to how daunting the open world really is. In the meantime, I've been playing the old hunters and it quickly reminded me why bloodborne is in my top 10 games of all time
Yeah, I'm also not bothered to relearn the game again just to play this DLC. I want to do a more complete run at some point in the future anyway, so I'll buy the DLC for cheaps once I'm replaying the entire game.
This might be the first DLC ever made that might win GOTY gongs. Quite impressive to think of that. Really looking forward to jumping into this.
My understanding is that in order to survive more than 5 minutes in the DLC you need to have a character at a ridiculous level, like 150 or something. Therefore it's hardly surprising that it has reviewed so well as the only people able to play it are already Elden Ring superfans
@Kanji-Tatsumi Dark Souls was still just a cult classic when it was reviewed. The blog says that it was only rated by 7 people
Bring it On. I didn't start NG+ on my first caracter just for the DLC. So I am going straight to it (and I am lvl 167 ^^).
N.i.c.e. thats amazing that elden ring shadow of the erdtree got the highest metacritic.of any dlc ever.from software is a iconic developers.word up son
Nah, nobody can beat cdpr DLC. Not even from soft. Their best so far was artorias of the abyss, Bloodborne dlc was alright and this sounds just as inaccessible as the others.
@Kraven it really is, and to an extent, I get it. They thrive on making games that are tough and not meant for everyone, but it would be great to be able to just jump right into a DOC/expansion without having to take down a couple of tough bosses first.
Congratulations to fromsoft I still don't like this game 😕
@Ooccoo_Jr If you reached the endgame 150 is pretty easy to be at.
The list is already broken when GTA4 Lost and Damned scored higher than the Ballad of Gay Tony.
@tameshiyaku Both are great but From are slightly better in my opinion.
Good thing for the PS5 Metacritic score that Eurogamer reviewed the PC version, giving it only 60/100.
I can’t believe Bloodborne’s Old Hunters DLC only got an 87. Not a bad average, but it’s probably my all time favorite DLC. But maybe ER: SotET will surpass it?
@tameshiyaku I have to agree with @DennisReynolds. FromSoft’s DLC are the best. But CDPR aren’t far behind. Both of them blow away most other games’ DLCs
Think we forgot Monster Hunter Iceborne at 89.
Just watched the Before you buy video about this DLC. The reviewer is basically saying the contrary: the DLC proposes a new way of exploring the world, it's much dense, with more verticallity, multiple paths that cross and separate, caves and mini dungeons have their own originality rather the same copy paste, etc.. conclusion is that it is a refreshing and refined way of playing Elden Ring.
Seeing Ballad of Gay Tony there is actually quite pleasing.
8 out of 10. Base game. 9 out of 10. Demons Souls Remake 10 out of 10. This is a joke. I understand this is a PlayStation site but come on. I played the demons souls remake and it was unbelievable. But it doesn’t hold a candle to Elden Ring. Is this just to pacify those that worship a box? This review and Eurogamer are ridiculous. Liam man, what is the deal?
@cburg That review is also superficial. Some other reviews have detailed all the innovations of the DLC and how it provides a fresh new experience. Putting that together with SMTV recently getting a 7/10 while the game is widely acclaimed as a masterpiece, I seriously question how games are rated here.
@Odium I don't personally feel that Mohg was so inaccessible, to be honest. I found myself finding a lot of the bosses naturally, just from a desire to fully explore the map. The fight itself can be tricky, but there's an item that let's you get 2 free stuns, effectively melting half the health before the fight's even started. With summons etc. I don't think it's such a challenge. To add, you can pretty much run past every other enemy on your way, if you so choose.
@J2theEzzo thanks for the reply, that’s good to know. Like I said, I’ve never fought him before because I just fought anyone I came across organically through exploration, I didn’t want to specifically look things up. I had read somewhere recently that Mohg is tough to get to and a pretty hard fight, but that’s good to hear, especially if I eventually decide to grab this.
@Odium Yeah, it's a tricky one, when there's so much hidden content, but you don't want to have your experience spoiled by looking things up. As a vague tip, id say its worth using the map to place down markers regularly, and risking it to take any shortcuts/ lifts or portals that you come across.
@J2theEzzo I basically lived off of markers when I was playing it but I know I still missed a ton. That’s one thing I love about that game though, for as much as I’m sure I missed, I don’t feel like I missed anything, I still felt like I had a full experience.
@Odium Too true! There's such a wealth of things to do, I felt I was constantly surprised.
@J2theEzzo it’s truly the best I’ve seen open world done. I never felt bogged down or overwhelmed, it was all just up to me.
