Update: An innocuous tweet from gaming tipster Tom Henderson appears to have been taken out of context, as the writer has provided an update on the PS5 Pro, based on his knowledge. According to Insider Gaming, devs will be required to support Sony’s supercharged system from 15th September, and while this doesn’t mean a release date will immediately follow, it certainly suggests the hardware will be available in time for the holidays.
Henderson doesn’t know a date, but previous privately obtained documentation alluded to a November 2024 target. The scribe goes on to hypothesise that PlayStation’s sudden appearance at the Tokyo Game Show – after years of overlooking major conventions – suggests it may reveal the system on home soil, as part of this year’s show. We’ll keep you updated.
Original Article: We've been writing about the PS5 Pro for years now, but the bottom line is that nothing's official until the thing is actually revealed. And with that yet to happen as we hurtle towards August, questions are starting to be asked about the console's supposed 2024 release window. Up until now, countless sources have suggested that Sony is targeting a launch before the end of the year — but its continued silence on the matter is, perhaps unsurprisingly, making onlookers a bit antsy.
Adding fuel to the fire over the last 24 hours or so, reliable insider Tom Henderson has potentially hinted that the PS5 Pro won't release in 2024 after all. When asked about the long-rumoured machine's long-rumoured announcement, Henderson simply replied: "If it releases this year!"
Now, are people reading way too much into a simple social media post? Yeah, probably. But Henderson's reputation means that many are already thinking he's heard some behind-the-scenes chatter.
From where we're sitting, we wouldn't panic just yet. Sony, in its current form, loves to just sit back and announce things out of nowhere. And while we are, once again, sprinting towards August (and its much busier release schedule), that still leaves us with four months before the year waves goodbye. We wouldn't be at all surprised if the PS5 Pro was revealed in the near future, before launching closer to the holidays.
Still, this is another case of Sony's silence being enough to unsettle the PlayStation faithful. Is there a possibility that the PS5 Pro simply misses out on 2024, even after all of the rumours? We don't like writing this, but as always, only time will tell.
Would you be okay with PS5 Pro skipping 2024? Have you been looking forward to the supposedly supercharged console? Give our poll a vote and then just wait and see in the comments section below.
Do you think the PS5 Pro will release in 2024? (1,424 votes)
- Yes, it's happening
- No, I don't think it will

Not interested in the Pro. Indeed, I have never bought any of the Pro iterations for previous generations either. I'll just wait for the PS6, when hopefully there will also be some games that actually warrant buying it...
It’s not needed; let’s get a single party PS5 game which pushes the console to its maximum. Once done then we can think of the next console. I truly don’t believe we’ve seen anything which pushes the PS5 yet…
Now that we're finally getting all those PS1 and PSP emulated games, there has not been a better time for the PS5 Pro to release
Nintendo announced Switch revisions in late July/August for September/October.
Probably because it's not actually that big a deal. It's the thing to do nowadays.
I'd be pretty hyped about getting it, but I won't complain if it's delayed to 2025 either.
@Czar_Khastik 😂😂
Never change.
They may want to time it with either GTA VI or a big 1st party exclusive.
@DennisReynolds
Yes I said a while ago in line with GTA6 special bundle deal. The only console to play the game full native 4K etc, all the good PR.
Also I can’t really see the point without a big flash exclusive to show off the power.
Maybe they having second thoughts, look at Switch and the sales. Switch 2 won’t be all that powerful either.
If Xbox release next generation Xbox 2026 are Sony going to do the same with PS6.
It’s not a normal generation this generation either to me.
Definitely not necessary as there are barely any PS5 games anyways and to get a decent upgrade I feel the tech required would have to be substantial.
I love my ps5 just the way it is. It looks great but it's all about the loading times. Playing games has never been this fun and addicting.
@Shepherd_Tallon Thanks man 😎
As much as I love speculation, this is the “Switch Pro” discourse all over again. “It hasn’t released yet,” even though its existence also hasn’t been confirmed.
“Do you think it exists? When will it release? Do we need one? Do you want one?” Copy, paste, post, repeat.
There's got to be a reason they're at Tokyo Game Show this year, and surely it's PS5 Pro? I think it'll still release.
I wanna see the pro if only the possibility that it would mean a price drop for the base 5.
I don’t think a Pro needs more than a months notice between announcement and launch otherwise you are just hurting sales of the current pair of models. Or is it considered 1 model sold with or without an accessory I forget?🤷🏻♂️
I don’t think we need one but I really don’t think they need more than a month to promote it, so there’s still 2 or 3 months left for it to be announced and launched in 2024, even if I did vote no.
I was expecting a 2024 release but I think if we still haven't heard anything official by the end of September then I don't think it will happen (this year)
I have no need for the pro unless it offers 2tb of storage like the new series x does
Isn’t this just a case of a reliable leaker reliably covering his reliable backside?
I still have base model which released 4 years ago, I’m more than satisfied with it even now. Don’t see any reason for me to be getting Pro model if it even comes. Likely games still will be 30FPS locked with RT enabled.
I reckon it will be this year, but if not then I think it will just be held back and turn into the PS6 instead if MS are looking at a shorter generation given how the series consoles are losing steam.
As for people feeling its not needed I would put it in the same category as mobile phones, their is no requirement at all for yearly upgrades to the newest model. But if the market is there and people want to have the newst version then I don't see an issue, its just more choice for the consumer.
It all depends on what the devs are actually up to, doesn't it? They are going to need at least some games that meet the "better on ps5 pro" threshold and warrant its release. The real system seller is going to be GTA 6 anyway, which we know isn't coming this year.
If they do have some good solid improved games lined up that will help sell consoles then I could see them launching alongside astrobot, but they won't sell many if they don't have some way of making it look really worth it for the 'right now'
An improved spec Hogwarts, CoD (unlikely, surely?) Final Fantasy(s) maybe a GoW double upgrade, Horizon Remake (lol) stuff like that would help move some units, though.
@Ravix Spot on, and you'd think that Sony would have one of its own blockbusters lined up to demonstrate just how much of an improvement the Pro is.
But we know that it's just LEGO Horizon, Concord, and Astro Bot this year. Sony could lean on third-party stuff though, like you say.
I think it will still launch this year. Announce a week or 2 after Astro Bot launches (allowing Astro Bot to get some time in the spotlight) and then release alongside Lego Horizon Adventures.
It'll come this year, with an announcement most likely at Gamescom at the end of August.
There's also TGS at the end of September, but that seems a bit too late in the year.
Also possible to announce it in a separate event (PS state of play for example) - we'll see.
Alas, they can't delay it for next year, if they plan to release it at all.
The more it's launch approaches PS6's (rumored for 2027-2028 for now), the more useless it becomes...
Either it's launched mid-lifecycle or not at all.
Skip it, it's not needed. As I found when moving from the PS4 Pro to the PS5, a Pro model greatly dilutes the impact of the true next generation system. The biggest plus I've had from the PS5 is the drive and loading speed... the rest is just 'meh', and no great leap over the PS4 Pro.
In fact, I'd go as far as to say that in terms of moving from one PlayStation to another, PS5 has been the most disappointed I've been... I was more impressed when I moved from base PS4 to Pro than from PS4 Pro to PS5.
@Paranoimia My Pro has a 6Gb/s 1TB SSD inside so the generational leap has been more like a stumble to me.
Nothing stopping them announcing it at TGS and dropping in October for Christmas - with that said, i wouldn't be surprised to see a pro model dropped to release alongside GTA6.
I still don't feel the need for a pro though and won't be getting one unless my PS5 breaks. Then again, I'm probably not the target market given I only upgraded to my first 4k tv yesterday 😅 Can't wait for it to arrive.
I've always doubted it would release this year, mainly for the fact that surely you'd want a big release to showcase its capabilities. It's not like last gen where the difference was obvious in terms of resolution, so to me it makes sense to bring it with a big first party game that'll show what it can do or GTAVI
@sanderson72 Similar here. My Pro had a 1TB internal drive and an 8TB external. That 8TB is now on my PS5 holding all my PS4 titles, along with an internal 2TB nvme drive.
I've found that with a few exceptions, the PS5 games themselves have been largely underwhelming - certainly nothing to make feel that a PS5 Pro is warranted.
@WhiteRabbit Thank you. I'm genuinely intrigued to see how much of a jump it will be for some of my favourite PS5 games!
I picked up the LG C3 (48"). Been hearing people talk for years about how good the C series is for gaming so decided to take the plunge. Hoping it lives up to the hype!!
It would make a lot of sense for this to launch at a time that more closely coincides with the new Grand Theft Auto, since it's predicted that will only run optimally on a Pro and it's the most likely game to help move a lot of consoles. Not to mention the fact that there have been so few killer apps exclusive to PS5 that it's borderline insane to expect anyone to upgrade at this point.
@WhiteRabbit
I don't think it's as much optimization as:
The system isn't very powerful.
The system was designed before RT took off.
AMD's stuff isn't very good. I'd love to see someone take another MS gamble on something like AMD cpu/Nvidia 4xxxx+ setup. Fat chance I guess.
Unreal is generally terrible on the generation it released. UE4 finally runs well on the PS5. UE5 will require PS6+. UE6 the same and so on. Maybe blame Epic there; I dunno.
The only thing this gen brought was fast load times and that's fine by me. At least that can't be clawed back the next gen like disc drives seem to be.
On one hand, they announced the PS5 in September for November launch and I could see them just sticking with the same, though that was after months of waiting for them to announce the thing they already said they were going to announce, vs this time where it's no mention of it at all.
On the other hand, we already went through years of "Switch Pro is this year" and it never happened. It's entirely possible that leakers saw PS6 prototypes and thought it was Pro, or that Pro is a prototype that exists on paper in case Xbox did a Pro, but since they didn't that contingency was never put into production, or a Ryan era plan that was cancelled before it ever went into production for business reasons. Or it could be they're waiting for Switch 2 to steal the thunder. Or they could be waiting for a game to go with it and when they originally planned this year, they thought one of those cancelled games would be coming with it. Or, the plans were there but got cancelled due to the volatility in the GPU market in general, where the 4090 Ti got cancelled due to the China ban, and then AMD cancelled their own 8900XTX and mostly decided to exit the high end GPU market and focus on midrange where the money is. One can assume PS5 Pro was going to share some componentry with 8900XTX production and the supply chain may have crumbled. (And if it's not based on 8900, it wasn't going to be all that impressive a jump of a console really.) Could be a lot of things going on really. Maybe Sony's own AI upscaler didn't work out so well yet. Or it ran Horizon and became corrupted and started spreading to other games.
The PS4 Pro was in announced in September 2016 and released in November 2016, still plenty of time for this unnecessary model to make it to market by the end of 2024.
"We've been writing about the PS5 Pro for years now, but the bottom line is that nothing's official until the thing is actually revealed."
I think maybe we can all take a step back and reread that first line.
Sony have never released a PRO console apart from the PS4 pro, and that was only done to help with the transition to UHD, HDR etc as well as chuck a bit more memory in there. It really wasn't a huge update.
To change the SKU and engage a second manufacturing line is a massive undertaking on so many levels, and the PS5 is selling massively on it's own and is really starting to get tapped properly this year and in the next few years will really reach it's potential.
Personally I believe all this PS5 pro design talk is really just the foundation for the inevitable PS6, which will probably release in the next 5 years.
Wouldn’t be at all surprised if they released it alongside GTA 6, or maybe another big release? 🤔 the problem is the later they leave it the closer it will be to the PS6. They need to hit that sweet spot in the middle of the PS5’s life cycle.
I called it out as an obvious lie that the Pro could come this year. I simply can't believe it would happen so early. If it did it would mean we could see many iterations of PS5 so much that a 6 would matter so little, and why would you kill off such a brand. I'm surprised the notion has even been entertained by such brilliant columnists as those on this very site. blinks
If it launces in 2024 or 2025 it would be interesting to see the price difference and sale numbers of the PS5 Pro and how this would impact standard PS5 sales numbers.
I'll probably get it but only if all games are updated to take advantage of the increased performance/features, otherwise not really worth it for me.
@sword_9mm Yeah, this gen released at least a year too early. The prior pro consoles were still new and still had life in them, they were killed far too soon (1X was produced, what, 2.5 years?) Hardware when it was announced didn't feel like it was much different yet than the pros that were still new, other than the SSD. The CPU is much less anemic, but quickly still became a bottleneck . The whole generation fired prematurely, and it shows. It's the best last gen console ever, but as soon as "new" games started coming out neither of them could handle it. Though I don't think a Pro would fix most of that with the CPU.
It's also optimization though. For some unknown reason half the studios just crank out games optimized to run on 4090s as though more than 5% of the entire gaming market actually has one. It's like they ship their game, broken, underperforming, just EXPECTING the game really targets the remaster 5 years later. Though that may also be due to Nvidia (and AMD) pumping money into studios to do exactly that.
As much as I've enjoyed the games that have released over the years. PS5 Gen honestly hasn't been that much of a jump (tech wise). I'll probably grab the Pro whenever that happens, but I'm certainly in no rush.
I feel like these insiders have been saying "if it releases this year" for a while now.
I think it is safe to say only Sony knows if or when it will release.
Gives me more time to save up
@NEStalgia
I'm not sure anyone is optimizing anything for a 4090; you're just brute forcing stuff with that guy.
Not to mention all the stutter/shader issues that plague the PC.
Yeah the 1x was a real bummer when MS killed it so quick.
I really don't see a use case for a 'Pro'. I'd rather them release a fully updated PS6 and ditch this gen. Unless AMD doesn't have anything much better to offer. Really time to move over to Arm but that's another discussion.
I think we need longer cycles before a new console release.
It takes longer to make games now - 3-4 years isn't enough. A new Ghost of Tsushima hasn't even made it out yet.
Another thing is when these consoles launch they tend to be missing a lot of features. Remember the SSD slot on PS5?
I would prefer it if they took there time with it because if PSSR is poor at launch it will really hurt sales.
Well my money is ready and waiting to drop on the preorder. No need for more than two months notice for something like this, so it not out of the realm of possibility just yet.
Looking forward to some new hardware.
that's ok. don't need it. cancel it. developers need to get back into the habit of optmizing their games, rather than brute forcing their way through the process (which by the way, still results in sloppy games with performance issues, no matter how much power you have at your disposal).
The PS4 pro was launched in 2016, about three years after the launch of the PS4 and we are already in the fourth year of PS5 and if, as sony said, we are past the peak sales of PS5 then if this PS5 pro gets pushed into 2025, what's the point of launching it. A PS6 would be in 2027 following the gap in the last 3 generations. Why bother when they themselves don't think that PS5 overall will have higher sales than before.
Said this before but the way this generation is going my next console will be PS6 Pro. Same goes for Xbox.
@WhiteRabbit Thanks!!! Have you found any problems with screen burn etc? That is my one fear - though I will say I've never had a problem with PS Vita or my Switch OLED.
It should feel like a big jump. I can't justify upgrading often (and my wife won't let me more to the point 😅) so I have been rocking a 1080p Sony from 2012. It's been a great TV but you can tell it is starting to reach end of life.
I have heard about screen glare so I think the blinds will be getting a good workout during the day!
I'd rather wait and see what the OG ps5 can actually do first. I don't see any game that pushes the ps5 to its limits at the moment. Its got some serious untapped potential considering how old and outdated the tech is..I mean it's positively creaking its that old but on a serious note once the console parity stops I think we will have some real bona fide eye poppers release. They will still be unfinished day one of course and require some tlc..TLC not dlc. Not sure the ps5 Pro will solve that.
@Czar_Khastik you always make me laugh buddy..keep it up 👍
Xbox is slowly leaving the console manufacture market, nintendo has a different slice of the market, cross-gen has just ended...
There is really no need for a refresh, just wait.
I WANT 30TH YEARS ANNIVERSARY CONSOLE EDITION
I WANT 30TH YEARS ANNIVERSARY CONSOLE EDITION
I WANT 30TH YEARS ANNIVERSARY CONSOLE EDITION
I WANT 30TH YEARS ANNIVERSARY CONSOLE EDITION
I WANT 30TH YEARS ANNIVERSARY CONSOLE EDITION
@jrt87 pretty much everything you stated there is all down to optimisation or lack of it. I have no faith in anything square Enix produce anymore. I've been playing GT7 quite a lot and that game runs in 4k and maintains a near constant 60fps and it looks awesome. In regards to UE5 in the right hands it's an amazing engine. It's not the ps5's failings if the devs can't or can't be arsed to optimise their games. I'm sorry my opinion differs to yours but that's just what it is..my opinion.
Given the lack of anything remotely close to a platform seller this year, they’d be idiotic not to. If I was given a reason to return I’d consider it. Currently Sony is doing everything in their power to chase people away, so who knows?
@PoeticJustice Yeah, that's exactly it, back in the day consoles were 5 year cycles because hardware was advancing at such leaps and bounds that 3 years later you were in a whole new world of tech and possibility, and games released on twice-annual cadences with holiday and spring releases meaning each year was packed with big games.
Now you have 7 years go by and tech hasn't changed much other than getting a little faster or with larger memory buffers, only one cycle of games passes in the entire 7 years and the middle is stuffed with filler, and as you said, they rush the consoles to market so much that PS5's biggest feature, the fast SSD, wasn't actually even available in the world of tech yet and they rushed their own duct tape hack job to get it in before market release, and then still had half the features missing. Generations really need to last longer, or we need to get rid of generatoins and go the PC route of biannual incremental upgrades with many year generations considered "current."
@sword_9mm LOL yeah, but I still get the feeling that most dev rigs are running 4090s (or A5000's etc) and thus they just test everything to perform well on their souped up dev rigs and then try to scale it down later. Heck ANY game leaning into RT at this point is pretty much doing that. And again, there's the heavy AMD/Nvidia sponsored studios that are all about cramming in the most heavy requirements possible to push teh "need" for the ever newer hardware and drive the hardware economy. "Optimized" may be too strong a word. I think its' more like "ran fine on my bench box (with a 4090)"
I'm not all aboard the ARM train myself, while it's certainly a good design and goes back to the age old RISC vs x86 arguments of yore, I'm very bothered by a single company having near total control of the entire CPU ecosystem across PC, mobile, console, automotive, embedded, etc. I think we need the diversity of different architectures for various reasons, and despite its issues x86 has some positives. I do agree though that this console generation is a complete wash. It never launched, PS5 is selling "great' but it's selling "great" in a world where its competitor is imploding at it still failed to actually gain market and is in fact losing market. Gaming is really coming apart at the seams. Meanwhile Sony's throwing everything at being only the default box to play the top 10 platform service social games.
The whole cycle of 1X is depressing. That was a fantastic console, and it felt like that's when XB was finally starting to get into its grove. Then 2.5 years later they just reset it all with Series, cancel it, pretend it never existed, and then squander all momentum after. By the time they actually started selling any 1X in it's first holiday after launch it was only a year or so away from being discontinued. I get that they had to keep up with Sony doing PS5, but, killing their own just-launched "more than a Pro" half generation was just a big middle finger unless they were going to do the annual upgrade model.
I don't really care when it's coming out because i don't really see a reason to upgrade it. I don't even have the money, but even if i had, i would need to think it over.
First, i don't even have a TV that supports VRR or 120Hz (which is something that can improve performance in some games like Alan Wake 2) and i think this is something that devs will rely more and more as time moves on. Also, if devs start to use Frame Gen a lot, we could have a lot of games running well even on base PS5 (as long as you have a 120Hz TV with VRR)
Second, even though not every game runs perfectly on PS5, the console itself is still running most games just fine and those that aren't running well won't necessarily run decently with the Pro if they're CPU bound (like Dragon's Dogma 2), since the Pro has a very small boost on the CPU clock... and i think GTA6 will be one of these CPU bound games, since pretty much every open world game is CPU bound
Third, i think buying a Pro now will not benefit me since I'm planning on getting a PS6, and i just prefer the leap between generations to be more substantial, otherwise i just feel like I'm spending money on the next big shiny thing and not taking advantage of anything properly. I just bought a PS5, buying a Pro and then in 3 years buying a PS6...? That doesn't work for me
@Ajfennell77 that should be the least reason one exists
For anyone that is saying it doesn't need to exist, games aren't maxed out. They literally are. That's why we are dropping more and more frequently under 30 fps. Potentially tripling the graphics power ensures that won't happen for 95% of games. And the PSSR sounds like a revelation. Just because you don't want one, doesn't mean the rest of us who have had their console 4 years don't. For the sake of a couple hundred quid upgrade
@Northern_munkey Thanks mate, appreciate it as always 😎
@get2sammyb it likely will, I feel. There’s two major trends holding back this generation, the way I see it. One, lack of exclusives and aggressive price hikes with zero justification to offset that lack of titles. Two, developers not optimizing games or chasing unpopular or unstable trends. If the rumors are to be believed then ps5 pro would indirectly punish developers for not making effort, as it’s basically offering to speed up and smooth out gameplay and graphics so long as devs implement the ability for the console to do so.
I just need a proper reason to see benefit to the hardware and ecosystem over other options, and I don’t see it right now.
@Andy22385 completely agree. My big concern stems from Sony requiring devs to implement compatibility. Devs are a large part of the issue, so there’s no guarantee a decent number of studios will support it. Hardly any studios support the Dualsense adaptive triggers, can’t imagine it’s super challenging.
@WaveBoy i thought about all of this already, and the thing is... everything is very complex, at least for me. I wished the PS5 would last until 2028, but we're still not sure if a PS6 will only come out at the end of 2028 or if PS5 will have Sony's support (like releasing 1st party exclusives) until 2028 but the PS6 will actually come out in 2027, for example. Most console generations last for 7 years, so the latter would make more sense to me.
Thing is, i live in Brazil. Consoles here are more expensive than NA or EU, even after converting dollars or euros to reais. Making an upgrade like that isn't something that most of us here take lightly. I also still trying to figure out how long PS5 will last so i can figure out what to do. PS4 is still going strong, but COVID affected chipset manufacturing, which affected PS5 production, making the console a little bit difficult to find until the end of 2022, i think. I'm not sure but i also think PS5 isn't that much cheaper now (because chips are still expensive) so most people are still on their PS4s and devs are aware of that and still releasing a bunch of games on PS4. There's also the whole free to play online stuff, that makes most people keep their PS4s. If a lot of people jump into the PS5 to the point where Sony doesn't feel the need to push a PS6 earlier, then they'll probably hold on to the PS5/PS5 Pro a lot longer, however if this console isn't as successful as PS4 then they will try to bring PS6 as soon as possible.
This generation is quite unusual, with the whole pandemic affecting consoles and now you have all these technologies like Frame Gen and VRR which can definitely make consoles like the base PS5 last even longer, and that without taking into consideration the new tech that Sony will use on Pro (that works like DLSS)
Anyway, imo 3 years isn't enough for me if the new console is costing around 5K here in Brazil (which i think it will be the case, since the base PS5 is costing around 3.700 reais now). Like i said, i still don't have a new TV with VRR support or 120Hz and that costs around 6-7K here, which is A LOT (minimum wage here is below 2K) and i feel like not having this kind of TV is actually hindering my enjoyment of my own console. I could play Immortals of Aveum with a decent framerate if i had a TV with 120Hz...so even if i wanted a Pro, i would first need to buy a TV
But like you said, it's all about choices and having fun. I have fun with my PS5 and i feel like i spent my money well. Regardless of what happens, I'm still looking forward to buy new games and enjoy what i can from my PS5
@Coffeeglitch yup absolutely. PS4 Pro was supported pretty well. But even if they don't bother adding a specialist mode on some games, if the performance is choppy it'll smooth that out without any dev input
@WaveBoy as do I. 4K doesn't interest me as much any more. I've just switched from a 4K monitor to a 1440 OLED and it looks far better. But I'd love more 120hz support
@WaveBoy Plot twist: it'll be an even BIGGER phallic router! Bigger means more power!
IDK, console mid gens feel even more overpriced for modest upgrades than even Nvidia extortion. They have a nicer GPU but still nothing earth shattering, restricted by lousy processor and even worse ram setups. And then they kill them in a few years. IDK where consoles go from here, it feels like it's hit a wall. Even gpus hit a wall. In a few generations a 7060 will probably be as powerful as a 4090 now.. THEN what do they sell other than artificial restrictions?
@jrt87 👍
I want to get one to have a backup ps5. So many PlayStation 4 games, I want to keep playing when I am a old crone.
@itsfoz wow couldn’t agree with your comments enough! Other than Returnal I’ve yet to see anything pushing the PS5 due to cross gen gaming being a $ony priority.
Back in the 90’s they used to say devs took 2 years to fully understand new hardware and with the PS5 now almost 4 years old, I’m hopeful to see so much more.
@windxtravelerx excellent comments and I echo, enjoy your PS5 and I’m sure it’ll be supported into 2030 and beyond due to its sheer power.
@Czar_Khastik I am playing at least one classic game every month now. I started up multiple PS5 games and then turned them off and switched back to a PSP or PS2 title multiple times this week
There is literally less than a handful of PS5 only games that have even slightly tickled what the PS5 can actually do, what do we need a Pro for? to make all those remakes remasters cross gen games pop-off? if there is a PRO its just a pure cash grab, this has been the most disappointing gen in a long time.
Slow news day? There is nothing that implies PS5 Pro would be delayed to 2025. Tom Henderson clarified here:
https://insider-gaming.com/playstation-5-pro-2024-release/
It's really pathetic how impatient this website is, just because there is still no info out there doesn't mean it won't come.
The same happened with the Burning Shores DLC.
Wasn't the PS4pro revealed pretty late?
I think the turbulence is come from the supply of the new CPU, now a day, if the margin of your product is not high enough to bids the price to secure the supply of the chip, you are squeezed out, low volume supply, that mean you have a shortage when your product launch, AMD unable to secure the supply of their AI Hi-End series, not even Intel.
Apple and Nvidia eat up most of the productivity, their markup is enough to bid the price from the supply side, maybe even good enough to make TSMC to turn down other customer, TSMC and everything related to semiconductor industry are unable to catchup the demand around the world, 7nm or below on high tide too.
I think the volume AMD/SONY has call and the bid/ask of the chip between demand and supply is dynamic and keep changing, all of this affect the PS5 Pro market price, and how many stock are able to put on the shelf.
Bid high to secure the supply, PS5 pro will have a bad price tag; Good product and price, but is it sufficient to fulfill the demand? Shortage for a year or more again?
It is not a market for $50/pcs, how many do you want? Buy more and then there is an offer. It is an auction, a gambling, you bid more for the stock to sell, but can you sell them out? Lower the cost will lower the risk, but when there is a shortage, your financial figures will look bad…
I hope they end the whole pro console thing.. it takes away too much from next generation and justifies a long cross-gen period.
I personally don't like that.
I would have been a lot more impressed with the PS5 if the PS4 Pro didn't exist, and I think the gross-gen period would have been shorter.
A tokyo game show reveal def seems a good fit and time so wouldn’t be surprised
Come on Sony do a September showcase and show off some new first party titles.
I loved the PS4 Pro, except for it's design, but I'm with others that still don't really want a PS5 Pro. The main problem with this generation isn't a lack of power in the PS5. It's the fact that a lot of 3rd party devs are just too lazy to take advantage of the PS5. Several 1st party games do exactly what the 3rd party titles have failed to do that have gotten people to want the PS5 Pro in the first place.
I'm not saying I wouldn't consider getting one at some point, but the need for a mid-gen refresh now ever since the PS4 generation is not there. A PS4 Pro made sense because of 4K and all of that becoming a big deal during that console generation. There's nothing of the sort this gen, just like all of the other generations before the PS4. Save the upgrades for the PS6, especially since most devs have probably used a fraction of the PS5's actually power so far.
zero interest in such a machine. matter of fact, i find myself drawn more and more to nintendo systems and handheld gaming in general. AAA just feels like a massive letdown these days, with a couple rare exceptions. with the switch 2 on the horizon and the steam deck providing my most comfortable and versatile gaming setup, this half-generation leap will be made without me.
Was on the fence but won't be getting one ....my missus got me a ps portal for my birthday ...and I play on that more now than my actual ps5 lol
I can see territory stages release here.
Like maybe Japan first then USA then Europe.
Like in the old days of console releases.
Just have that feeling.
All that power but devs would still have to factor in Series S in their game development.
Read the update, so my update is: I didn’t know when the TGS was but I can live w/ a very late September announcement for a November launch, 6 weeks notice is more than adequate to sell a VRR system to the few people who have a VRR capable TV.
Why they’re doing it in Japan where people will be saving their money for Switch Pro is beyond me though.
Will they? Won't they?
Either way, I'll be happy when we get past the point of speculation.
The ps4 pro is amazing console.so i expect ps5 to be the same also.word up son
The launch model of the PS5, on its stand horizontally is very sketchy. The only reason I am looking forward to a PS5 Pro is that it is another opportunity for them to fix that mistake; but I am not holding my breath.
I'll get a ps5 pro at launch if i can get my hands on one ,have to be mega quick when pre orders go live etc , think it'll launch November time like others have said
It still feels like 30% of new releases also have PS4 versions, so can someone please explain why we need a PS5 Pro already, when it seems fairly certain the power of the existing PS5 hasn't even been maximized?
@thedevilsjester why is it sketchy standing up? Mines been standing up since launch .
First there were software whales, now there's hardware whales. Cash in on the influx of enthusiast early adopters, collect their cash, hype how the product is greatly exceeding sales expectations (in initial launch), watch sales plummet after launch, then ignore the product.
We're onto you, Sony, we're not new at this.
@LordServbot oh I see. Yeah it’s nowhere near a s stable lying down I found. I built a unit specifically to hold the standing PS5 on the right and my PS3 on the left on a shelf halfway up with the PS logo light on the bottom shelf underneath . I shall be buying a Pro though for sure. Plenty of games could do with an RT boost or FPS boost (definitely a res boost on performance modes)
@ShogunRok But also from third-parties this year is notably absent of big blockbusters, the only one that comes to mind is Assassin’s Creed Shadows, but then again, I think back in 2016 there also wasn’t big blockbusters to show off the PS4 Pro, as I remember they showcased it with Mass Effect Andromeda of all things.
I feel (like many others) that the PS5 still hasn’t realized its potential yet. So why get a Pro? To slightly smooth out some existing games? I feel like some enthusiasts will buy this, but even fewer than bought the PS4 Pro (and I believe that was only around 20% of PS4 sales). The reason hardware sales have dropped off are due to people playing old games, often on PS4. Also, there are relatively few PS5 only games compelling people to buy one. So why would THEY now jump to PS5? GTA6 is the only game that may make people pick up a Pro, but it’s guaranteed that game will be well optimized for PS5 (which will be cheaper than the Pro). It’ll be interesting to see what happens!
@playstation1995 I loved the PS4 Pro too. I remember firing up Battlefield one after years of it barely scraping 25 fps on og PS4, and to have it locked to 30 with such a good res boost was such a win for stability in games. Also what’s wrong with a mid-gen refresh, people upgrade pc components all the time at a serious cost. A PS5 pro will also be a big win for games like Final Fantasy 16, Dragons Dogma 2 games we know have issues with performance
@Mikey856 Standing up? Do you mean vertically? (I was only referring to its horizontal orientation) It is definitely a lot more stable vertically; but that is not viable for many setups.
I wish it were, since its clearly designed with a vertical orientation in mind; but I can't think of many setups where vertical would be a good choice.
@thedevilsjester yes apologies vertically. It definitely suits the design better like you say. I’ve just always found myself referring to it either standing up or lying down ever since PS2 😂
@Mikey856. Thats true.the ps4 is so amazing.im still playing on it.the ps4 have so many excellent video games.yes it definitely will boost other viseo games.its all good.yeah.i never understand why people replace theyre phone like every 2 to 3 years.im a fashion man i rather spend that money on clothes or a ps5 pro and more video games.word up son
i wouldn't be shocked if sony has held back announcements for this. so the sooner we get a ps5 pro announcement i think you'll see a bunch of new game announcements finally.
There's not enough difference between the PS5 Pro specs, as previously discussed, and the PS5 itself to justify them waiting any longer. If it does not drop in 2024, then it's either not coming at all or it won't be the same hardware that's been widely discussed in recent months.
I really think this is a waste of hardware when PS6 is what 2 year away unless they extend the PS5 to 10 years. I don't think the PS5 really have been used to it's potential really
@Nakatomi_Uk PS6 is rumored to be likely released in 2028. That's 4 years away, not 2 years.
Even if they show the PS5 Pro during the Tokyo game show in September, there no guarantee that the console with be in the hands of customers this year.
It's not unusual for consoles to be revealed many months before launch.
@Rob_230 I have the 65" C1, it's great for gaming, 120fps, VRR and HDR support, it's really specced out for modern console gaming. later models like your TV should be able to get a bit brighter for HDR content so that's cool.
I think you will be satisfied with that TV
@rjejr Well it's not strictly a VRR system.. The regular PS5 has VRR support as well.
The new system should be capable of delivering an enhanced experience for people without VRR capable TV's as well.
there's plenty of games that struggle keeping a steady 60fps on the PS5. And some of these games support VRR (meaning that the frame rate could drop to every now and then without it being extremely noticeable)
For people who don't have VRR the frame rate will dive straight to 30fps when it's not capable of maintaining 60fps.
But a new more powerful system should be capable of hitting that 60fps target more often if not all the time. So that is an improvement even for those why don't own VRR capable TV's.
Day 1 purchase for me 🔥👍
I certainly hope it's releases this year. I think it could improve GT7 with 4k/120 and PSVR2 with 120fps rather than 60fps with frame insertion.
If the Pro also makes me choose between graphics and performance, I'm out.
That'll be a day one for me. It's not needed but none the less I'm looking forward to getting one.
@itsfoz probably not getting much more out of Ps5 or Xsx then we already do
Perfect 50/50 split in votes, amazing.
@Pranwell “ Regular PS5 has had VRR for years. “
It does? Well then I’m really running out of reasons why we need a Pro.🤷🏻♂️
4k, HDR, SSD, VRR
Does it still need 7.2 ATMOS? Maybe wireless HDMI? DisplayPort out? There aren’t enough 8k TVs out there to be promoting that.
I’m sure in another few years, after FF7 Part 3, Ghost of Tsushima 2 and Wolverine Sony will force a PS6 upon us b/c they know generations, but I barely see what we’ll need even then, much less now. For all Concords issues I haven’t heard people complaining all that much about the graphics.
Thanks for the VRR info though, I’ll try to keep it in mind for the next time one of these articles shows up.👍
