Developer Team Asobi has already confirmed its upcoming platformer Astro Bot will receive free post-launch DLC, and now we know a little more about what some of it will entail. Apparently, the game will be updated with speed run stages, much like the ones featured in Astro's Playroom.
The news comes via Famitsu magazine (thanks, Genki). "We plan to release DLC that includes playful stages and exciting speed run stages like in the previous game by the end of the year, so please look forward to it," creative director Nicolas Doucet told the Japanese mag.
If you remember, Astro's Playroom has a section named Network Speed Run, which houses a series of timed challenges. After racing through each level as fast as you can manage, you're then presented with leaderboards, which utilise PS5's built-in challenge system that alerts your friends when you've beaten their times. This is a really addictive and fun part of Astro's Playroom (and an underused PS5 feature in general), so it's great to hear these speed run stages will make their return in Astro Bot.
In addition to these competitive levels, Doucet does also mention "playful stages", so it seems the DLC will be more than just the time trials. Exactly what these are is a mystery, although we do know the main game includes smaller platforming gauntlets to test your skills, so it could be more of them.
Astro Bot is super close now; it launches on 6th September exclusively on PS5.

Nice this is looking better by the minute!
So can’t wait for this!
That's nice but I wonder if they'll add a VR Mode too? if not then I'm still not interested in the game.
DLC is a lovely bonus to a game I already think will be very "complete" on purchase. I've put my weight behind this one with pre ordering digital. Only 3 games so far have won that privilege in my near 30 years of games buying! But extra content, delivered as part of the asking price should be the way to go. Bamco/Capcom take note!
@RubyCarbuncle I highly doubt it. Kinda confused why so many people so desperately want a game not designed for VR to have VR support slapped onto it.
Having no interest in this due to a lack of VR is fair enough. But I'd think you would be clamoring for them to make another VR-exclusive Astro Bot rather than reverse engineer this one to be VR.
First - preorder
Second - download
Third - Play and enjoy
Fourth - Platinum
Fifth - play dlc
@RoomWithaMoose Oh Idk it might have something to do with the fact that Astro Bot was originally designed as a VR game? 🤔
I play VR games regularly now and playing Astro Bot on a flat screen is boring and uninteresting to me now. If you're not bothered about the VR sure no worries but many of us are.
@RubyCarbuncle They've said they won't add VR because this game wasn't designed for it. It'd basically need to be a different game at this point, unfortunately.
@get2sammyb Mhmm and it sucks. I mean sure the game looks lovely but being a regular VR gamer now I find going back to play certain games (not all) on a flat screen rather difficult and this game is one of them.
If the Trophies really are hinting at a sequel then I can only hope they make that one for PSVR2.
@Sequel We'll see I guess but an optional VR Mode definitely would have gone a long way.
Free dlc too. Cant wait for this game - it just looks brilliant!
(also technically beautifully made - and we learned Mr Cerny has had at least a tiny bit of input).
I love AstroBot! I love free dlc. I hate dlc that adds trophies to my 100% Platinum'd games! I hate "speedtrials" - too old for that *****. Not sure how to feel about this news to be honest.
I loved the trials of the first one, and I also loved the trials in sackboy. I am so ready for this!
