We thought we'd been spoiled yesterday with a five-minute look at the frankly stunning Dune: Awakening, a survival MMO headed for PS5 in 2025. Imagine our surprise to find 25 minutes of developer-led gameplay, fresh from Gamescom, awaiting us today.
In the presentation, we see the early-game experience, a tutorial jaunt before being dumped into the harsh deserts of Arrakis. Developer Funcom brings its free-form climbing system over from Conan Exiles, which has received some exciting upgrades thanks to the sci-fi setting. Traversal looks emergent and fluid, with jump packs, grappling hooks on offer, and the more esoteric suspensor belts.

To survive, players must manage heat and sunstroke and harvest water from plants and fallen foes. At its core, the game is a third-person shooter with melee and special abilities, a trinity that the developers call "combined arms."
What do you think of Dune: Awakening? Will you ensure that the spice flows? Let us know in the comments section below.

The shooting looks like poop.
I've wanted a survival game with good shooting for a while. And all I could think of while watching Dune 2 was how amazing of a world it'd be for a game. So... yeah. I hafta keep my eye on this one for sure.
Epic you say.
Looked rather average and generic the other day.
Looks supremely janky with tedious base-building - and it's an MMO, eww.
This looks crap. And I know this is a different timeline without Paul, but I really dislike some of the shortcuts they’re taking with the lore. Speeders? No Fremen? Gun fights over the sand?
I mean...
For a game to be immersed in in an epic world... This looks pretty sweet for an MMO.
I'm no fan of MMO's, cause they're always topdown camera views, but this one puts you right in there.
I've got big expectations for this one
I do not see the EPIC part, did they leave it out of the video or do I lose my eyesight?
Lately PushSquare labels a lot of things Epic, brilliant, stunning. Good times ahead.
I don't know maaaaan - I feel like the franchise has the potential to make a good leap into the gaming world but I'm not sure this is it
No single player....i am out.
No single player, let’s take it away.
Norwegian dev, Funcom , can not do this, they are too much weak and have lack of creativity for making it
Looks boring, generic and outdated. Another shooter looter/MMO GaaS? According to steam.db, Suicide Squad has right now 67 players. Yes, 67. It's giving an idea how far such games are irrelevant, whatever the IP is used to decorate the void. Not to mention that the Dune universe will be stripped from its essence in this game, making it more empty than empty.
@BoldSolz The "franchise" has already provided two masterpiece in the 90ies: Dune, an innovative RPG/strategy game, and Dune 2, which invented the RTS genre, 2 years before Warcraft.
@B0udoir Fair enough, I wasn't unaware of that. Especially didn't know it invented RTS. In this instance though, the modern take on it doesn't look overly impressive. Alas, I'm a fickle gamer lol.
@BoldSolz
I would consider Herzog 2 the first RTS game ever released on an electronic device.
Dune II refined it by a mile.
@NoHope Yeah man, I was just reading up on Wiki then lol - Learn something new every day!
@BoldSolz
No worries, I am old enough to have played Herzog 2 back in the day, but I must admit, it wasn't for me.
Later I started to enjoy RTS games.
