Considering the unprecedented success of Animal Crossing, we’ve never quite understood why more developers haven’t tackled the concept – especially as there’s no real alternative on PlayStation, beyond Disney Dreamlight Valley. It seems like NetEase has finally picked up the mandate – and in many ways, Floatopia could surpass Nintendo’s legendary franchise on PS5.
The premise to this title, due out in 2025, is actually really fun: you live in a world where superpowers can be acquired easily, but with all of the best stock already sold out, you’re left with some of the crappier abilities. Miserable and doing a dead-end job, you stumble across a floating island inhabited by others who find themselves in a similar situation, and so you embark on a new life above the clouds.

The game really captures that kitsch look of Animal Crossing, with many of the elements being made up of real-world items. For example, some characters will live in milk box houses. We’re not overly keen on the Pop Mart-style character design, but we know this look is very popular, particularly in Asia, so it makes sense.
“We have put a great deal of effort into the details of this magical world, utilising high-quality rendering techniques, exquisite material details, and delicate lighting,” the Lead Game Designer explained on the PS Blog. “These elements work together to showcase the game’s unique miniature world, creating a believable and immersive experience.”
But the crucial detail here is that, with NetEase at the helm, this is being built as a live service. Nintendo infamously ceased development of New Horizons, despite selling tens of millions of copies during the pandemic. That won’t be the case with Floatopia.
“Our vision is to create a whimsical, heart-warming, and fantastical world through the continuous release of engaging, high-quality, and cross-platform content,” the PS Blog post continues. “We aim to provide you with a relaxing and joyful dream vacation in Floatopia. Let’s embark on this journey together!”

Surpass Animal Crossing? No chance in hell. Might be a better game but sales wise its never beating AC and honestly even if its a better game i would still stick with AC due to the fact i can play it handheld.
Ahh I don't think it will quite surpass Animal Crossing now as that's an established franchise and this is brand new. This being said we'll see, I could be wrong.
Of course it will surpass animal crossing on PS5. Because Animal crossing isn't on ps5 🤷♂️
Surpassing Animal Crossing? Yeah, I honestly doubt that.
@DennisReynolds Live service support will give it longevity that Animal Crossing doesn't have.
I'm also assuming this game will be free. (I don't think they've said either way yet.)
I mean yeah, Nintendo ceased development on New Horizons.
It was delayed into COVID, and the same team that makes that then went on to Splatoon 3, who are now probably making the next Animal Crossing.
So its like....yeah, cut support for the game short was probably the best option.
@get2sammyb To be fair, "Live Service" and "Free to Play" aren't exactly favorable buzz words these days 😅
I'm sure this will certainly find a crowd though, but unless we get another lockdown, surpassing AC is a stiff hurdle!
@get2sammyb Live service could also kill it. Also AC is still widely played. Really though its the handheld factor, AC is popular because you casually play it while watching TV or when on the bus to work, its not really a TV game or a game you spend hours playing at a time.
This game will surpass AC, same as Foamstars did with Splatoon and Immortal Fenyx Rising did with Breath of the Wild.
I love Animal Crossing, so I can probably get into this Floatopia game. Doubt it will surpass AC, but it doesn’t have to as long as it’s good and successful in its own right.
Yeah sorry, there is no way it can surpass Animal Crossing.
Lots of gamers aren’t exactly fans of F2P or live service titles. And Animal Crossing is super popular especially when playing in a handheld.
Also the ironic thing is that this Floatopia game is coming to Switch lol.
Disney Dreamlight Valley is my go to cozy/village sim game love it to bits and the support it gets from the team is insane
@Keyblade-Dan Yes, a much better, more fleshed out game.
