It sounds like localisation speed is a key point of improvement for NIS America, as the publisher has reiterated its intent when it comes to bringing Falcom titles West. As you may already know, the American arm of NIS is responsible for translating, marketing, and publishing franchises like Trails and Ys, in place of Japanese developer Falcom, which has never quite had the resources for a global operation.
Infamously, though, the West has long been behind Japan and Asia when it comes to the latest instalments. At its worst, it's taken years for some of the games to land on Western shores, but significant progress has been made in recent times, thanks to NISA's continued efforts.
Case in point: Western fans are now just two games removed from the latest Trails release in Japan, which is a huge deal when you consider previous release timelines. Indeed, Trails through Daybreak launched last month here in the West, and its sequel, Trails through Daybreak 2, is already scheduled for early 2025. This was pretty much an unthinkable scenario, even just a few years back.
"I can’t really talk specifically to what we’ve done internally to do so, but I can say that we’ve been working hard to make sure that we do localize [Falcom games] more quickly," NISA's Alan Costa told PC Gamer.
"We recently announced Trails Through Daybreak 2 is coming out next year, which is a substantial cutdown in terms of the timeline that we used to have for Trails games. And as you can probably guess based on the timing of this game, we were also working on Ys X concurrently," Costa revealed, during a Ys X preview event.
He continues: "We do want to bring that timeline down [...] We do want to bring [games] out as quickly as possible, but not at the expense of the localization quality. Finding that balancing act is something that we’ve been working on for years at this point, and we’re getting better."
It's a quote that'll be music to the ears of Falcom fans. At this point, it's worth mentioning that the scripts for some of these games are enormous — and so it's great to hear that NISA's getting the greenlight to push even harder with its localisation work.
Are you a Falcom fan? Are you happy to see NISA steaming ahead with these localisation efforts? Make sure you're all caught up in the comments section below.

We need Trails in the Sky on PS4/PS5!!!
I've finally caught up on the Trails series and now nothing seems to matter anymore. Until Daybreak 2 comes out.
@Angelus3K It's like we did a Dragon Ball Z fusion for a brief second
I can't keep up with them anyway. One Trails game is like The Lord Of The Rings trilogy already 😆
This is great news. I’m slowly making my way through Daybreak. I’m 90 hours in and only on chapter 3. I’m looking forward to the journey. I should be done with it by the time Daybreak 2 releases 😬
Well it doesnt really matter anymore. By the time they catch up the Trails series will be done anyway xD
Keep up the good work NIS! Your doing great! Really enjoying Daybreak so far although I have had a much time to play it as I'd like.
Yeah, they have been doing a good job.
When daybreak 2 releases we will be only one game behind japan. Then they can start working on reducing that time lag.
I mean... Ys shows what we can expect. They are down to one year lag from japan. If they can bring it down to 6 months or less we will be in an acceptable spot.
I don’t have a way of playing trails in the sky trilogy…only game on my ps5 and switch
So I’m going to start with trails from sky and go from there. I could use a slow burning, story oriented series to get into! Always been interested in these games
Is the 3rd game, releasing this September in Japan, going to be the last game in the current arc? I've held off buying Daybreak so far, because I want to ensure the full arc comes to PS4 first.
@Nem Don't Jinx it Knowing Falcom when they do release Daybreak 2 here next year they will be announcing another new trails game right behind it that we will have to wait for lol.
@Areus That wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing (more trails), but i do believe they are making a new xanadu. I would expect that to be next.
@Czar_Khastik @Angelus3K most likely very soon! A major port/remaster/remake is continually being teased by Falcom president Kondo. He’s gone on record saying that they know the demand and to keep looking for news!
I played them on PC and FC/SC is my favorite games of all time!! Thankfully in the meantime if you find a laptop in a ditch or at Goodwill, most likely it can play Trails in the Sky lol. It’s super easy to run.
@RainbowGazelle of the arc, yes. They said in an interview somewhere they didn’t want the arc to be as long as Cold Steel
Currently on Chapter 4 of Daybreak and really enjoying this one way more that Cold Steel 1-3, once I've finished it though I will go back to do CS 4 and Reverie. My only negative about the whole series so far is that they try to make every character have some big secret and there's too many plots going on at once in each game.
I would also like a Remake of the Trails in the Sky games, to see what kicked off this whole saga.
@cjay_001 Yea I have a PC so can run it no problems. I will probably start it end of this year but I’d prefer a PS version for trophies lol
@cjay_001 That's great to know! Thanks for the info!
