PS5's Lack of Tentpole Exclusives Isn't Hurting Engagement, Says Sony 1

While some enthusiasts would strongly disagree, Sony doesn’t feel like the lack of “tentpole” exclusive titles have impacted engagement with its PS5 console this year. While the platform holder has published titles like Rise of the Ronin and Stellar Blade, it hasn’t released a major sequel since Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 last year. Helldivers 2 did defy all expectations and become the fastest-selling first-party game from the firm in history, but this wasn’t predicted.

Nevertheless, the manufacturer told investors during an earnings call, as spotted by PlayStation Lifestyle, that its enjoying record engagement, with the 116 million monthly active users it attracted in June 2024 being the “highest number ever recorded” for the month. It’s worth noting that PC releases, like Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut, are contributing to that success, and expanding the PlayStation ecosystem, as intended.

Sony’s always said that 2024 will be lean year for major first-party releases, as it’s putting the spotlight on smaller brands, like Concord, Astro Bot, and LEGO Horizon Adventures. This is causing frustration among the fanbase, as many are eager to know what’s next from the likes of Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, and Santa Monica Studio. We should learn more about that next year – although the Japanese giant moves in mysterious ways these days.
