As our world continues to get smaller, it probably shouldn't come as much of a surprise to learn that Alien: Romulus director Fede Álvarez took inspiration from a particularly dark and gritty video game released in recent years, namely The Last of Us: Part II. Brief, targeted spoilers for both that game and film to follow!
Spotted by Eurogamer, Álvarez revealed on X over the weekend that he was actually playing The Last of Us II while writing the script for Romulus, and the storyline revolving around Dina's pregnancy was the catalyst that inspired him to have the character of Kay deal with her own nightmare birth scenario.
Álvarez would ultimately cast Isabella Merced to play Kay in Romulous. In one of those interesting quirks of fate, Merced has also been announced to play the role of Dina in Season 2 of the upcoming The Last of Us adaptation from HBO. You couldn't write this stuff! Quite the gamer, Álvarez even included a subtle nod to Creative Assembly's Alien: Isolation in the film.
Are you surprised by the influence of TLoU II's best girl, Dina? What about that Merced twist? How does that even happen? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

Thankfully Dina doesn't have to suffer what poor Kay had to go though, s**t was pretty wild 😂
@DennisReynolds for real! I think Shaw in Prometheus might have some words though.
The whole movie I was thinking the character Navarro in Romulus was the same face model for Yara in TLOU2 but apparently it’s not lol
Even the planet named Jackson.
I thought it was inspired by Alien 3 pregnancy and the human-alien hybrid newborn of Alien Resurrection...
@DennisReynolds That ending has certainly stayed with me. Enjoyed the film thoroughly.
I didn't know Isabela Merced also played as Dina. What a coincidence.
And a bit off topic, Romulus did well at box office with $226 million from $80 million budget. I hope it get a sequel because i really like Rain and Andy character.
Aptly, from the moment Rain appeared onscreen I couldn't shake the uncanny resemblance she had to Ellie.
@Skeletor85 same
