Bungie has revealed it has plans to support Destiny 2 with new content — both paid-for and free — through until at least 2026, as it announces a change in how it approaches and distributes its post-launch expansions. Instead of building up to an annual DLC release, the developer confirms it will instead ship two medium-sized expansions every six months. It will then fill the gaps left with four free content updates every year.
Via a roadmap, Bungie has confirmed the next Destiny 2 expansion, currently called Codename Apollo, will launch in the summer of 2025. Then, six months later in the winter season of 2025, Codename Behemoth will release.
On the change in structure, Bungie said: "We’ve loved creating annual expansions and are especially proud of The Final Shape. But the truth is that they dominate almost all our development effort. We need to free ourselves up to explore and innovate with how we deliver Destiny 2 content so we can invest in areas of the game that will feel more impactful to players." Instead of the traditional story-focused, one-shot campaigns Bungie has been doing for years, these new expansions will "explore exciting new formats" like a non-linear story, a Metroidvania structure, and survival shooters.
"Departing from one-shot campaigns doesn’t mean we are turning away from great story telling. Going forward, we want to return the mystery and wonder that was woven into the fabric of early Destiny, when the story felt ripe with possibilities and an epic sense of exploration and discovery," explained game director Tyson Green. The time in between the main expansions will be filled by four free content updates, which are said to contain new activities, rewards, weekly events, fresh features, and game balance adjustments.
The team also states it's going to try and make Destiny 2 more approachable for new players via updates to the activity UI and Director menu. "And we’re reworking our reward model to make sure that all of those activities offer meaningful rewards."
Bungie shared the news as the Destiny franchise turned 10 years old, after the original game released on 9th September 2014. To celebrate, players can earn an armour set for every class based on what was revealed in the very first piece of concept art for Destiny. There'll also be a new Legend title to earn by completing a set of challenges.

Is destiny 2 still last generation?
If so I guess it will still be supporting last generation until 2026?
We will never shake of last generation at this rate, with fifa and COD following last generation as well.
I honestly just have not cared about it since Final Shape.
How about giving back paid expansions and original campaign first. It's been six years sincing playing and it had replay value
@TheFakulty Couldn't agree more. There probably good technical reasons for them sunsetting expansions but that's still hefty content that people paid for.
I’d like to see Destiny 1 updated to 60fps on PS5 (4K would be nice also).
It’s not much to ask, surely?
Another poor decision by bungie and Sony. Destiny needs to be on a new engine they should have made destiny 3. This should have been done 2 or 3 years ago when they took away paid content from everyone.
Do Destiny 2 fans even like Destiny 2?
Still can't believe they ain't moving on.
Honestly you'd of thought with the title final shape bringing back a beloved character within the series.
They would of wrapped it up and moved on. New engine fresh start.
At this point if you ain't already in the eco system of destiny 2 you ain't going to be.
I want to see them tackle single player again the original halos, we're by far great Sci fi epics.
Unfortunately destiny aren't kings of live service.
I wonder how the community will react to this. A big part of this will be the price; I already thought that the annual expansions didn’t offer enough value. Then they tacked on season passes for expansions, which I thought was really cheeky. If there’s not enough meat on the bones of these, the community will abandon this game, more than they already have.
Don't play the game ....played the first at launch abit and completed the campaign I think kinda....did try to play the second several years after release and I had no idea what was going on....and all the ai seemed to absorb my bullets so...gave up....
I for some reason assumed the last dlc was the last one before they where moving on
@AdamNovice they should find a way to rebuild them with better memory resource, the game is not bigger than a ac valhalla/gta online/ffxiv so I cannot understand their previous excuses.
I can’t wait to see more content that I could pay for and then lose access to forever!
Just make something new.
There still has been nothing from this bungie purchase. All they have done is eat at the profit margins and cause that stir in the ecosystem. They could have 10 individual studios and good sized games in development for single player at bungies headcount
This purchase was the biggest waste of money. Makes Concord look like a drop in the bucket.
I have hundreds of hours into Destiny 2 but jumped ship after completing The Final Shape. The game is such a grind fest. It's good to see that they actually want to push in different directions, but that also makes me think it'll be Fortnite with space wizards.
I do think the shift from one annual expansion to two smaller expansions is a smoke screen though, the devs are always working on new content for expansions, so it doesn't matter if it's one big or two medium, you can only make so much content in a certain amount of time, so I'm betting it'll be the same amount of content, but with a higher overall price annually i.e. instead of one $80 expansion, it'll be two $50 expansions.
I wanted to like Destiny, but by the time I got around to giving it a try there was so much lore that has come and gone that it didn't even seem worth getting into it.
@ZeroSum My thoughts exactly; I haven't played D2 in years, but from the outside looking in this just seems like one more way of trying to milk more money-per-user out of the ever-dwindling playerbase. I imagine the full package of expansions and season passes will cost substantially more than the equivalent 'full package' edition of Final Shape.
Jesus.. Why. Take a hint bungie
I feel like its kind of crazy that since Bungie left Microsoft and then be reacquired by Sony we haven't had anything else from them except Destiny for ten years now.
Man. What I wouldn't give to see them do something akin to the old Halo campaigns.
@Bez87 you know they have a couple of pretty big games coming out right?I don’t think they have lot of time to mess around. They are gonna finish this light and dark story that’s been going on for long time. But marathon and matter which is a codename are being worked on. Looks like Matter is ps5 exclusive from what I’ve read. It’s 3rd person game.
I won’t spend another $ on anything Bungie.
So strange that Bungie keeps following up bad decisions with even more.
The way Destiny 2 has been evolved, it’s completely walled off any new player attraction. If a player didn’t get in on the early content they now have no idea how to get into this game. It’s so inaccessible to new player and the old players are gradually leaving. Let this game die and reboot something new. Time for Destiny 3.
Like many, I stuck around for the story arc ending. Now, I can't even be bothered to finish the season. More and more reused content sold as "new" seasons. (I know, lets make them glitter, no one will know. Lol) Honestly it feels like a money grab now.
I think many players are done with it. I fully expect cancellation, due to lack of players. It's too little too late. They've totally alienated the player base.
Start over with D3 and a demo of the significant changes up front. That's their only hope IMO. If it wasn't for the massive buyout I think Sony would already have closed the studio down.
@Ninerguy1608 Big?
Marathon is a competitive online shooter only, so that's a risk and won't be mainstream.
The other game, I don't think so.
I'm not sure if you are aware but this stuff was revealed before the break down within Bungie where they're was lay offs and an entire team of people moved away from bungie and became a new studio within PlayStation for their game.
So where does that leave Bungie as a team? We don't actually know.
All we do know right now, is it's destiny 2 well.into 2026.
Which from what I am seeing is a big decline in players, apart from the hard-core destiny players.
Otherwise they aren't even interested in bringing new players in, even the destiny 2 fans are getting fed up.
I stopped playing Destiny after The Taken King was released. That's Destiny ONE. When they announced the year 3 expansion, Iron something, and offered the game brand new, with all expansions and a starting light level to skip the grind, for $60, after I already sunk $180 into the game, I gave it up. They didn't offer any of their loyal players who invested in the game anything but gave everything away to brand new players. Was absurd! That moment was what killed GaaS for me, back in 2015!
@Bez87 yeah destiny 2 I pick up once in awhile. I have fun when I play but don’t play often. Kinda waiting til end of final shape to get back in. I’m curious where it’s going. Havnt checked news lately so maybe it’s already been said. This may sound crazy but I said couple years ago what I thought wouek be cool. What if xur has been a spy this whole time. Giving us weapons and armor just so he has reason to be here every weekend. What if he is part of whole race/races of evil/they think they are good and want to destroy us. I know sounds crazy. But him being a spy the whole game wouek be cool to me
