To be fair to Hideo Kojima, he’s been dabbling with photography in his games for quite some time. Do you remember Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriot’s cool (but controversial) Beauty and the Beast photoshoots?
Death Stranding 2: On the Beach will take things to an entirely new stratosphere, however, as new footage from the Tokyo Game Show reveals how you’ll be able to snap actresses Lea Seydoux, Shioli Kutsuna, and Elle Fanning as they mess about with some of the most realistic motion capture we’ve ever seen.
And according to Kojima, the Photo Mode will actually somehow affect the story. While he didn’t elaborate, the auteur explained it “would be better to take good pictures”. We wonder if taking bad pictures will somehow affect your relationship with the cast?
Either way, we’re intrigued. Kojima is one of the most creative minds in gaming, so while we’re not surprised to learn he’s adding narrative hooks to his next game’s Photo Mode, we’re also fascinated to see how it all works.

I still have PTSD from that moment in FFXV when the pictures I had taken were used to cause me emotional damage and I had a meltdown in front of a darn videogame. I hope it’s not something like that 😢
Never cared about Kojima until DS. Now I am obsessed.
@yazzika What was it about DS that made you a fan? Genuinely curious.
Question: Were the Beauty and the Beast photoshoots controversial for any legitimate reason or was it the usual anti-Stellar Blade crowd having a moan?
Anyway... the best photo mode I have ever seen was FF15. It was cool having all of these random pics of your adventures.

The greatest mind working in gaming, an absolute wonder of a man.
@AdamNovice I am huge into arthouse movies that have a similar vibe and pacing. Daft Punks's Electroma, Satantango, Stalker, Gerry, Elephant, Fonotune, The Brown Bunny etc.
And I would have never thought that somebody has the balls to do something like this in an AAA level game. This game should not exist and yet, it does. And I love it for that.
When the camera zoomed way out and the music started I got tears in my eyes and thought "I was not aware games are doing that"
Looks like a possible pass? I don't want a TikTok simulator. Being a mailman was one thing but now this? Ugh... Prove me wrong Kojima.
Hopefully taking pictures isn't super crucial to the game's story. I never use photo modes...ever. I just don't see the point. I don't have the patience for them, either.
I remember the one good thing about Starfield was that the photos you took in photomode were used as loading screens.
Ah yes the good old days trying to photograph Mei Ling's panty in that MGS VR mission.
@ApostateMage Fallout 76 did the same thing, I think they brought it in with a later update, not sure if it was before or after Starfield did it. Made me up my photo game massively
I'm really glad that MGS 4 was released 16 years ago. If it release today, Kojima probably wouldn't used four very attractive supermodel for Beauty & Beast characters or he needs to removed camera & photoshoots mode from the game to cater to certain group who can't accept the idea that fictional female character can looks beautiful and attractive just like in real life...
Anyway cool news. I love using photo mode and took a lot of pictures in GOW, Ghost of Tsushima, UC 4, and Death Stranding 1. If photo mode has some impact for the story then i would gladly used it a lot :3
@PuppetMaster he's making this game which has those things now though...
@yazzika That's awesome to hear such a different take on how a game resonated with someone.
That moment when you climb over the hill and Asylum for the Feelings starts playing still sticks with me, it absolutely captures the game's atmosphere perfectly.

In the days where everyone just copies each other and makes copies of copies, hideo is the most creative out of the box original thinker, while having it make sense, in the history of video games
@InsaneWade I ship them <3
@whatkindofsick But without supermodels wearing tight skinsuit. I even doubt we can aim the camera at private part. The first game has a mini cutscene where Sam punch the camera if we aim it at his crotch for a couple of seconds.

Compare to photoshoots in MGS 4

@yazzika I agree. Kojima isn't for everyone but I'm glad he's doing what he's doing. I arrived late too, MGSV (despite gaming since the late 80's) but many years after it's release then, Death Stranding (PS5) became one of my favourite games of all time. Now I'm paying close attention to anything out of his studio.
Odd choice, but it’s miles better than the pizza delivery fetch quest, specifically the last one.
Yeah I loved DS but I hate this idea of potentially having to use photo mode for anything major. Sure, side missions are fine but I’m not interested in doing this for major story bits
