Final Fantasy 16 has been suffering from some unexpected bugs on the PS5 this past week, and it’s beginning to look like the system’s recent firmware update is to blame. Players have reported everything from graphical glitches to crashes in the console exclusive – none of which occurred prior to last week’s system software overhaul.
“Since the recent PS5 system update, there have been reports of crashes and graphics-related issues with the PS5 version of Final Fantasy 16,” a Square Enix spokesperson wrote on X (or Twitter). “We are currently checking the situation with SIE. We apologise for any inconvenience caused. Please wait for further updates.”
Some fans have noted that the issues extend to other games as well, so this could be a flaw with the new firmware update – although, anecdotally, we can’t say we’ve been having any issues in our games. We assume this will all get patched up promptly, but just sit tight if you are experiencing any unusual bugs, and we’ll update as soon as we know more.

And here I thought the motion blur on the game was bad before......
Also had issues on Death Stranding and Jedi Survivor.
Some random coder is about to get hell from their boss.
Sony promoting the PC port of FF16 by messing up the PS5 version
Stability update 5.00247284981 required urgently please
Omg I've been having some crazy graphical bugs & crashes the last few days while playing and I was worried there was something wrong with my console lol
I finally got around to finishing the game last night one of the final scenes was mad glitchy too 🥲
You know it’s really bad when there’s an F-bomb in the headline. Jeez. Hopefully this gets fixed!
Hyperbolic headline. It's not good, but it'll surely get resolved sooner than later; especially if other games are being affected. "F*cked" would apply more to something like Concord, lol.
@Yousef- Right after the "Bungie Getting Its Head Pulled Out of Its Ass" headline, too.
It's like when you first allow your kid to swear where appropriate, and then they start trying to muscle fun naughty words into everything.
@Ralizah it's definitely one way to get attention. Not a great one. But a way nonetheless. Like youtubers screaming at the camera.
And here I am on the latest beta firmware having no issues! Go figure!
I’m sure it’ll get fixed soon. No need to worry.
And I was wondering what that "Improved system quality and stability" updates mean...
@mariomaster96 its to promote the PS5 Pro
Mmmmm some strange "bugs" have been popping up everywhere... ps5 pro they say has the "fix"
For people claiming this is to promote the PS5 Pro, that’s ridiculous. More likely a faulty update that will be fixed soon.
This is why I never update the system immediately. I always wait a while to see how it will play out. Glad I didn't update on this occasion even though I have the game on PC but still this sucks for people affected by this.
@danzoEX Stop spouting nonsense please.
@Ralizah Agreed.
I'm a long time Pushsquare reader and I've also noticed that the articles have become more and click-baity and sensational for... practically nothing.
It's as if they are writing contents just to trigger people for more comments and engagement. I'm really not liking the direction that this website is heading.
@Victor_Meldrew This made me chuckle lol
@puddinggirl: I agree. But every market will regulate itself over time. I don't have any ill will for this site, but if I find one that better suits my interests, I'm not gonna look back.
So far all I've seen is even worse sites though, except for maybe Gematsu^^
Uncharted Collection also has some graphical glitches.
@DonJorginho Being playing Death Stranding Directors Cut recently as I finally got around to starting it, Incredible game btw.
What are the issues on that as I have not noticed anything off with it?
I wonder if this has anything to do with the terrible UI lag I've been experiencing of late.
Hopefully sooner rather than later as it took them over a year to fix the crashing issues for Nier Automata on PS5 that also happened because of a random system update.
Remember on Saturday when all of you were all "but console just works and PC has driver updates and windows updates and it breaks everything and then you have to google for why and wait for it to be fixed?"
Well, you just got OS and driver updates on your console and it, according to PushSquare, "f**ked" your games.....
@NEStalgia thing is, it affects everyone. When I play a game on PC and something doesn't work, I pray that it has happened to enough people for someone to have posted about it and people replied to it with helpful info. Sometimes the OP replies saying that he got it fixed without mentioning how...
I remember playing Skyrim and at first I got a black screen. I found out it was the drivers. Then there was no sound. I don't remember what the issue was with that one but it took me quite a while to figure out.
I've noticed my games stutter.. especially Alan wake 2 and ff7 rebirth. I thought it was just because I was using the higher graphic presets.
Final Fantasy 16 Is F**cked... Period
And I thought it was just a glitch since I started a ng+ playthrough
@Ralizah To be fair it is pretty bad when it happens. I had a cutscene where the sky's were turning into a pixelated black sky and then the environment was being turned into a colorful mess(Especially in the Deadlands).
@McBurn I'm checking out the website.
@naruball Well that's Bethesda. They're a special snowflake. Their games fail in one of a kind nobody has the same issue twice ways on every platform lol. I bought the collectors edition in 360, the one with the huge dragon statue (still have it taking up tons of space) I fell through the floor brush in whiterun. Couldn't get back to the world. And every save was affected. Never touched the game again until rebuying for vr1, but it ran so poorly. I'm finally going to get to it, modded to heck and back on pcvr though!
But yeah I know the feeling of hoping others have posted the same issue etc, but, I think these days that's a lot rarer. Components and tool kits follow enough standards and common resources that while no two software environments are identical and software can conflict, it seems like mostly the "unique" problems are more caused by things you DID do or install on your system that's unique than by things you didn't do. Not 100%. But I think the drm stores and download managers solved a lot of problems vs every game having it's own install shield, all of them fighting for installing conflicting dependency libraries in the system directories, and all their patches doing it all over again. I think that was 75% of the problem with PC games breaking windows all that time.
@Nepp67 Still better than the purple fog the devs put in though....
@naruball @NEStalgia Didn't Skyrim have a memory leak or something on PS3 that made it unplayable after you spent enough time in it? At least on PC, there's very little that isn't addressable somehow. Although, frankly, I've had way more game crashes on consoles than I have on PC in the last decade.
System-wide console firmware issues like this will be fixed by daddy eventually, but for individual games, you just have to hope the developers are competent. Whereas most games on PC will have mods and unofficial fixes to address issues.
@Nepp67 Yeah, I'm not saying an issue doesn't exist, just that the game isn't "f*cked." I'm sure Sony is scrambling to address this.
@Ralizah FFXIII is the most fun one. Trapped on PS3. Works on Xbox, looks beautiful. Has horrible stuttering and frame drops out of nowhere. On PC, there's mods that get it running smooth, including one that stops the game from polling for hotplug controllers like 1000x a second. How did square not fix that, like, ever?
For what it’s worth, nobody I’ve asked is having problems. So hopefully not super widespread.
@NEStalgia This conversation reminds me of one I had with a friend about being a pet (an animal one, not... nevermind). She remarked it must be wonderful to have all your needs attended to and taken care of, and all that's required of you is some basic loyalty and love. And I said, sure, that sounds good, until your owner neglects to provide water for some extended period of time, or he delegates the duty to his kid and the kid forgets, and you realize how utterly dependent you are on another entity for the most basic things.
Sure, it's nice on console for all your needs to be addressed without any real effort on your part, until they're not, for whatever reason, and suddenly you're reminded that you're funneling money into a walled-garden PC environment where you have no control of, influence over, or right to almost anything. And boy, do they make you pay for that privilege!
@Ralizah "an animal one"
Wait, doesn't this go with the OTHER FFXVI article comments?
Yeah, that description is really everything right on the nail with console. When I got frustrated with 90's and 00's PCs, I really liked being a pet. Life was a lot easier, and I got a lot more time to play games than work on maintaining them. But yeah, the more they neglect me, leave me outside in the snow for a week, and sell me to the dog fighting underground, the more it's reminded me how much I've been funneling money into their walled garden and they can cut me out at any time, left with nothing, or blackmail me for ever escalating payment like a loan shark or lose it all. Consoles may be "cheaper" than equivalent hardware, but I always keep in mind if I find myself in the poorhouse tomorrow, if I can't keep paying to keep on the train, I'll be left off the console wagon with nor route to get back on. PC, I can always scrape together bargain basement parts forever to keep playing everything I've collected to that point forever and likely keep enhancing it to be better with mods.
All that said, I definitely get it's not for everyone and there's plenty of people I wouldn't recommend PC gaming to pretty much ever. Easy as it is these days, it's still not just an appliance you turn on and use, and there's definitely an audience that just wants a cheap appliance to turn on and use that doesn't have an "investment" into the platform other than what they're doing with it today. Console definitely has a place, but, I don't think that place is with enthusiasts anymore, which is basically everyone participating in sites like this.
Why do I feel like FF16 probably has some spaghetti code...
Not a technical genius on how PS5's work but completely sounds like some type of shader caching issue.
I've seen a few online having issues with the disc drive (for the slim) not functioning after the update
Now that the firmware is out, I guess there's no harm is saying I beta tested this last update. I didn't have any issues until it went 'live' with the public update and then I started having a few games crash on me since.
@ShaneReactions Obviously something went wrong somewhere. Hopefully it’s sorted sooner rather than later. Nobody I know has been having problems, but who knows how widespread this actually is.
It's amazing how long the new UI update was in beta and it still wasn't completely tested properly I suppose. Goes along with my theory that I've had since the beginning of this generation that PlayStation gutted their tech team that handles the UI and either hired people off of Craigslist or didn't hire anybody at all and just have a handful of people expected to shoulder all of the load.
I say that because the PS4's UI was always extremely reliable, and if there were issues that needed fixed, most of the time they got done in a timely matter. I had a lot of faith in the team, which is one of many reasons I went with a PS5 this gen. Now, basically 4 years in, we are still missing features, some things still don't work properly, and it took forever for them to get this out of beta (only for it to still need work I guess). Something had to have changed once the new gen came along.
Don't know if there is connection, but my Vampire Survivors crashed right now. After 50 hours (total) first crash. Yes, I get to the point where my arsenal was huge so the screen was just flashing like crazy rainbow, but still...
...and Spotify normaly continued to play.
@naruball my least favorite is the YouTubers face with “Is iT AcTUalLy GoOd????” Or whatever in the thumbnail.
@IamJT ah, yes. Gotta love those guys. I haven't seen them in a while and I feel so much better.
I've been having issues with it for a while now - but then I was in the last beta so this still makes sense. Flickery shadows and complete crashes. The last crash was particularly bad as it was during the finishing scene and the last autosave was before the final boss.
could symbolize the break between Sony and SE....😂🤣
