Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 drops imminently, on 25th October on PS5 and PS4, and the latest action-packed instalment will support an Enhanced Headphone Mode. This mode uses Immerse Spatial Audio technology to "increase the directional accuracy of sounds" in-game, which can be further customised to your head shape. This third-party audio tool and alleged potential advantage can be yours for just $20 for five years, and there is even a free trial.
This revelation has caused an initial knee-jerk reaction online, although it's probably worth considering how effective this new tech will ultimately be. IGN dived into the extensive Activision blog post on the subject, and the short version is this: Embody is an audio company that has previously worked on Cyberpunk 2077 and Final Fantasy XIV, with its tech integrated to make games more immersive.
Black Ops 6 players can boost this Enhanced Headphone Mode by paying for a premium, personalised Head Related Transfer Function profile "specifically created for the Call of Duty soundscape." Activision failed to mention that this service carries a price tag, and with launch now upon us, players are finding out and expressing their concerns.
