Metaphor: ReFantazio is out imminently, available on PS5 and PS4 on 11th October. Persona fans will quickly recognise that the series' iconic calendar system has returned. Still, new players and Atlus veterans alike can rest easy, comforted by the knowledge that nothing in the game is missable.
Speaking to Quest Daily (thanks, GamesRadar+), director Katsura Hashino allayed our fears: "We didn't want players to feel limited by time. You can return later to places you've visited using a fast travel system to do everything you want without feeling rushed."
Expounding, Hashino describes why the epic fantasy spin-off enjoys such universal acclaim, outlining just a few things players can look forward to doing to pass the time: "You could be milking an animal in one place or bungee jumping in another. There's a wide variety of things to do."

Oh, word? I think the "real calendar" aspect of Persona is great when I'm following a guide - it feels like every day brings something new and interesting, and it truly feels like time is passing in a meaningful way - but as a completionist, it DOES stress me out. This sounds less stressful.
I'd love to dive into Metaphor and not have to feel like I NEED to follow a guide to see and do everything (or most things).
Metaphor is already installed on my ps5 so just have to wait till tomorrow at 9 PM to play it. Can't wait to spend 100 hours or so in this game
I've already cleared my calendar for launch. Goodbye social life!
And here I was stressing over getting the side dungeon done before the main one. Oh well. Got it done though.
Will definitely be looking forward to playing this game eventually 😌
Thank *****!
@Khayl Adam out here doing god's work!! I wasn't going to get the game because I was going to wait until a comprehensive game was out. It's something that I really dislike in games is having limited time/chances to do things, even though I do love Persona, I've played all the games with a guide to do as much as possible on my first run.
>"You could be milking an animal in one place or bungee jumping in another"
Okay but I can do both of those things in real life. I play games so I can do both those things at the same time.
@GMaster7 My thought exactly!
@Korgon My thought exactly!
Though, judging by your pic, you might agree that SF6 is a harsh and demanding mistress
Brilliant news. Fearing missing something if I do what I feel like doing is the only downer of this type of game.
I've never been a fan of the calendar system when they started implementing that. They should've continued with the persona one/two style. It sounds like it doesn't function the same way as it doesn't persona, where you have a limited timeframe or you could miss something or accidentally not bond with somebody.
Atelier series, they removed the calendar system so people can enjoy it. Still has it, just way more lenient like basically not bundling them like older games where they would say you have two years to do this task and one week for the other etc etc
@Yagami The exact same thing happened to me like I don't wanna use a guide on how to answer somebody since it takes away from the game enjoyment and I missed one social link on my second play through. I didn't feel like playing it again just for that link and follow a guide. It takes away from the enjoyment and the game in general, and the game becomes a job. The weird part was that I was nabbing all the Social links way better than the first play through, but I messed up something with one of the characters that I couldn't get them, the robot girl.
@Yagami oh yeah, no doubt but these games take a long time and I was on my second, so I didn't wanna go for around three
Good. The less time I spend looking at guides to make sure I didn't miss anything, the better.
Lengthy games should prioritize keeping your attention on the screen at all times, and getting rid of easily missable stuff goes a long way in achieving that. I love booting up a big JRPG and knowing I can explore its world and activities at my own pace without fear of accidentally skipping content.
Sounds like good news. Got it installed. What got me sold was the variety of towns and lands to visit. Plus, so far the demo's soundtrack has been epic!
That's a shame, that's what added a lot to replaying P5 for me, same with Dead Rising 2.
I am really looking forward to this… but a little scared. I’m all for a challenge in games, but the fact all the reviews have said this one is particularly difficult does stress me out a bit, mainly because I absolutely suck at turn based games 😄. Even in PSR which people see to agree is an easier one I got stuck in at certain places… but I will persist (after clearing a backlog which includes Persona 3 Reload… so may take some time! Haha)
I could swear there was an article stating the opposite of this, months ago. Here https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2024/06/players-wont-see-every-dungeon-in-metaphor-refantazio-jrpg-offers-a-lot-more-freedom
This is one of the elements I wish the game had left to the Persona series tbh!
@MichaelNau
Indeed it is! I've been meaning to take a break from it for a while now though so Metaphor will just provide the prefect opportunity. I have over 500 hours logged into SF6 so it deserves a break!😄
I’m put off by the fact that it’s 80-100 hours, I know myself enough to know I likely won’t finish it, but I’m loving the demo and am so tempted to grab it. This is a selling point for me, while I completely understand the mechanic, that’s one of my least favorite features of Persona games.
@Korgon
540H was the amount of hours it took me to bring Marisa to Master ^^ from June 10th to May the 1st. I was so happy I put it on my LinkedIn lol
YES, that's the only thing I wanted to know about this game. I thought as much after playing the demo, but good to know for sure.
The calender system in Persona is the only reason I never wanna replay it.
A calendar system is one of the most stupid ideas to be ever put in games. I want to experience the whole game in one go.
Great news 😎😎wasn't gunna bother with it as the time limit and having to decide which social stuff to do on persona put me off but no time limit think might grab it now as it does look sick 😎
