A specific fight in the new Dragon Ball game is driving players up the wall — and having struggled through it ourselves, we can absolutely see why. Early on in Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero's story-based Episode Mode, you go up against Vegeta's Great Ape form — a giant enemy that offers up a much different challenge to your regular-sized opponents.
Basically, the battle is a massive pain in the arse. Great Ape Vegeta is capable of both grabbing you out of melee combos and nailing you from a distance with beam attacks — and getting hit with either of these moves demolishes a large portion of your health bar.
A quick jaunt over to the Sparking! Zero Reddit shows just how widespread the frustration is, with numerous threads all complaining about Great Ape Vegeta and his busted moves. He's a real roadblock in terms of progressing through the game's single-player modes.
And if you really want a taste of the frustration for yourself, look no further than this now viral tweet from @BarretDokkan, who's resorted to simply hitting the retry button as soon as Vegeta pulls off one of his infamous attacks. Can't blame them!
The complaints are so widespread that we're almost certain Bandai Namco will take action. In fact, a lot of the game's AI could do with an overhaul. We're playing Sparking! Zero right now for review purposes, and one of our few criticisms is that the opponent AI is wildly inconsistent. Sometimes it feels like the difficultly skyrockets for no good reason — and Great Ape Vegeta is a perfect example.
By the way, Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero is only available in early access at the time of writing this article, via the game's more expensive editions. It's fair to assume that the complaints will go nuclear once the title is available to everyone on the 11th October.

Damn, sounds rough; Pretty sure this exact same fight was also a major difficulty spike in Xenoverse 2; makes me wonder if Frieza's also going to be incredibly difficult to defeat in Sparking Zero.
As a gigantic (pun intended) oozaro fan, this is eye-candy for me. 😍
I had 2 hours to play this game last night and the last hour was just trying to get through this fight. But I hope they don't change it because people are complaining. To me it says this game is going to be fun and is going to give me a challenge for a long time which I welcome. Especially coming off of Kakarot which you get to a point in that game where you just obliterate anyone and everything with a glance. So I'm thrilled to have a GREAT dragon ball game actually giving me a hard time!
I haven't tried it but it can't be worse than pre patch radahn from the Elden Ring dlc. That fight forced me to repsec and use a cheese build just to finish it.
@AfroMario Good for you, but not everyone thinks the same like you do. The ideal solution would be if the game OFFERED to make the fight easier if you keep failing - of course, you then have a choice to make it easier or to keep trying. Both sides would be happy... at least, I think.
And this is why you should always pre-order the most expensive version of every single game. So other players can play a more polished version at a reduced price.
For a game that has massive mainstream appeal, my opinion is that it's just way too hard. A lot of people will bounce if they don't rebalance it.
@Maubari yes, a comment under my name will generally represent my thoughts and will and not others'.
Last night, I had the pleasure of beating Great Ape Vegeta. It was a challenge, but he tends to fall into a pattern, so he was hard but not impossible. It’s funny how easy Namek was afterward though. I practically had full health when I defeated 100% Frieza.
If you beat him pre nerf then everyone MUST bow down and respect your superior video gaming prowess. Right?
The game's not even out yet. I wouldnt complain until after the now sadly traditional "day 1 patch".
@get2sammyb It's been a while since I saw the anime but didn't Goku lose that fight? Is this supposed to be a "survive for x amount of time" mission or is it just busted?
The monkey battles were also frustrating in Budokai Tenkaichi 3
All I did was spam my special the entire time I beat him very quickly. He runs away right when you do it. Regular Kamehameha throws him all the way across the stage. It was actually a very easy fight. I didn’t know people had trouble at this fight. I’d literally did it on my first try. Lol
So if you get put into that code/script straight off the bat when the fight starts you ain't winning 😂 I can deal with games like Dark Souls or Elden Ring but that is nasty.
I hope they dont change it, and it can remain as a challenge. But at least there is always an option. Back in the day, you would get stuck in the freaking licensing exam of the Driver game and I never got that passed.
Yeah this ***** was hard lmao 🤣
@Maubari A lot of people have limited time and want to relax. Maybe kids or busy job I don't have the patience for a lot of things anymore either. 😅
Weird, I beat it my first try.
@Now-Let-Me-Say01 That’s exactly what I did. In the tip menu, wherever it appears, it even tells you to spam long distance attacks on it.
I thought nothing of it, beat it on my first try.
@OmegaStriver The fight that I had trouble with was the Genyu force lol I went through a good chunk of this game without realizing I could switch characters also lol
Removed - disrespecting others
@z0d15g0d No, Vegeta gets hit with a Spirit Bomb at some point, as an Oozaru he gets his tail cut off by Yajirobe so he turns back into his normal form, Gohan turns into an Oozaru and ultimately lands on top of Vegeta and crushes him. In the end, Vegeta can't even stand up and drags himself back to his pod thing. Krillin or someone says they should kill him but Goku lets him go. It's true that Goku couldn't beat him alone, though.

Vegeta vs Kid Buu
-Survive until the time limit ends-
@McTwist Ive experienced ZERO issues.
@Maubari But only if then, upon choosing an easier difficulty, you're forced to wear a chicken hat, a la metal gear solid 5. 😉
@Matroska Ah thanks for the recap dude. So the game is bugged then.
Beat it on the third try but I can 100% understand the memes and the frustration lol
They do give the option to lower the difficulty 🤔
@AFCC After the embarrassment of the Xenoverse Great Apes (to the point they're now only used for Dragon Ball/TP farming), it only makes sense they're out for revenge in this one.
