Mojang has quietly released the PS5 version of Minecraft, its ever-popular sandbox game. The native, current-gen port launched yesterday, 22nd October 2024, and is now available for purchase.
We've known a PS5 version of the game was coming since June of this year, when Mojang announced a preview release to get player feedback and find bugs. While things have been pretty quiet, save for a small update last month, it's now on PS Store alongside the PS4 version.
Speaking of, if you own the last-gen version of Minecraft, you can upgrade to the PS5 rendition free of charge.
For those just embarking on their blocky journey, Minecraft is a sandbox survival game in which you can build practically anything you like by mining the procedurally generated land for resources. Developer Mojang has recently spoken about a more regular release schedule for updates and new content, but there's no shortage of DLC to dive into as well; crossovers with other games like Tetris and Sonic the Hedgehog are worth exploring.

I wonder if our DLC (looking at you, Path of the Jedi and Universal Studios Experience) will actually work without constantly breaking now.
I'll patiently wait for my PS5 Pro to arrive to enjoy this as intended
I wonder if it supports PSVR2 in any capacity?
No trophy autopop sadly.
I have a sneaking suspicion that if I jump into this game on PlayStation 5 I'm going to be spooked out of my gourd, but I don't even care! I'm going to give it a shot!!!
What does this version brings? Really?
I'm intrigued t know what the improvements are? Why does this need to exist?
@sanderson72 @Darkashura Probably a two-fold thing.
1) It brings it in line with the experience when playing on an Xbox Series X (which doesn't have a "native" version but is enhanced via the more robust backwards compatibility capabilities)
2) Upgrading to latest SDKs on PlayStation.
This "blocks"! Excellent!
It does seem to load the game world faster. The max chunk display is a lot higher, too (you can see further into the distance). It's also first version of Bedrock Minecraft to support bundles, so there's that (though that applies to all versions, including the PS4).
I found it awkward to get, though - do NOT grab the PS5 Minecraft Preview in the store, that's not the right thing, and the new PS5 version doesn't show up in a store search. I had to have Minecraft (PS4) selected on the main screen, then see the "Free PS5 version" graphic in the lower right and go pick it from there. Then I could "buy" the PS5 version for $0 and download it.
My question is, can PS4 save files / worlds be imported into the PS5 version of Minecraft?
Or do I have to use MS account to upload my world from inside the PS4 version first, and then via the same MS account download it from inside the PS5 version after?
@Czar_Khastik but if a humble brag huh
@Darkashura More money for Microsoft.
Hmm it’s not a free upgrade for me in Japan. It costs ¥22. Very cheap, but not free
I’m sad the menu icon doesn’t play the Minecraft theme.
@SheerDisappointment they seem to have given up on Minecraft vr unfortunately. Even announced that they are removing the pc vr.
@Balosi Looks like my username has become very relevant then!
I upgraded for free / downloaded the PS5 version yesterday. It saw my PS4 save on the console, and showed those worlds in-game as "old" - these needed to be converted before I could then play them in the PS5 version. After that was done and I had exited the game, I deleted my PS4 save / worlds.
This reminds me of when the PS4 version changed from "Editions" to "Bedrock" several years ago - in that case the "Editions" worlds similarly had to be converted to the new format to be played there.
