While BioWare took the graphics of its new RPG Dragon Age: The Veilguard in a more stylised direction when compared to its three predecessors, the project director of the next Mass Effect game has said that won't be happening in the next title from the team.
On Twitter, project director Michael Gamble responded to questions concerning the next Mass Effect RPG following the warm critical reception The Veilguard received ahead of its PS5 release on Friday. Speaking to how both titles are from BioWare, he explained: "Both are from the studio, but Mass Effect is Mass Effect. How you bring a Sci Fi RPG to life is different than other genres or IPs... and has to have different kinds of love."
He explains this by stating "Mass Effect will maintain the mature tone of the original trilogy", and in response to one fan, suggests the series will remain "photorealistic" for "as long as I'm running it".
Upon its re-reveal earlier this year, when the subtitle was changed from Dreadwolf to The Veilguard, one of the big talking points was the RPG's change in visual style. It received some criticism in the moment, but as BioWare shared more about the gameplay and mechanics, those concerns quickly subsided. The end result is a quality title that we awarded an 8/10 in our Dragon Age: The Veilguard PS5 review.
"Dragon Age: The Veilguard isn't quite BioWare back to its absolute best, but it is the most cohesive and emotionally engaging RPG that the studio has delivered since Mass Effect 3," we said. "Its shift to crunchy action combat is an improvement over Inquisition's middle-of-the-road approach, and although the game feels a little light on meaningful player choice, the storytelling pulls no punches when it actually matters."
