Update []: In a statement issued to our friends at IGN, Sony has officially confirmed existing PS5 Slim covers will not fit the PS5 Pro console.
A spokesperson said: “PS5 console covers are not compatible with PS5 Pro. However, players will be able to swap out different console covers for PS5 Pro when they become available in the future.”
So, if you already own a set of face plates, then you’ll need to replace them if you want to attach them to Sony’s new system.
Original Story: There’s been a lot of confusion about PS5 Pro and whether you’ll be able to attach existing PS5 Slim face plates, like the gorgeous pearlescent chroma collection which is coming soon. An Amazon Japan infographic said these wouldn’t be compatible, but Sony’s own wording appeared to suggest this information was incorrect.
For example, in the PS Blog announcement post for the PS5 Pro, co-CEO Hideaki Nishino said: “Players can add an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive, or swap out console covers when they become available.” This suggested to us it’d support the existing face plates, but in hindsight it now seems like the new console will be getting its own range.
That’s because one Reddit user managed to get their hands on the PS5 Pro early and test things out. While the bottom covers do fit, the top plates have their connecting teeth in a slightly different position, and thus aren’t compatible with the supercharged system. Please keep this in mind before you potentially spend any money on the chroma covers, or any others.
All in all, this is a real shame. Obviously, we understand the PS5 Pro has to have a slightly different shape due to its different hardware, but the face plates aren’t exactly cheap, and it’s already released variants for the launch model PS5 as well as the PS5 Slim. Releasing a third set of covers specifically for the PS5 Pro seems a little ludicrous to us.

I kinda wish they could have made them compatible. But oh well. I’m getting the 30th anniversary one so I won’t be swapping plates anyway.
The Sony designers should explain this; for me there is no reason they couldn’t figure out a way to make them work for both models. Either it’s incompetence, or Sony want to REALLY monetize the PS5 Pro - I wouldn’t be surprised if the Pro-specific plates cost more than the the regular ones.
Well duh, did people think the pro would be the same size as the slim?
3 different sets of plates is ludicrous, understandable they needed smaller ones for the Slim (slightly slimmer) model
I thought the Slim & Pro would be the same, with the size difference being taken up by the larger gap in the middle
Very disappointing
@Magatsuhi Well PS5 Pro is bigger, but the difference initially seemed like it was just the mid-riff section that was adding height.
As these comparison pictures show, the sizes are VERY close.
This was known with original first coverage via CNET article, it was asked and confirmed a no. People fought and argued with me that was wrong yet here we are.
"when they become available"... Seems pretty clear to me.
The pro is bigger too. It's obvious they weren't going to fit.
@Magatsuhi Obviously not
People thought the much larger gap between the plates would make up the difference. Duh
Sony keep catching Ls. They need new management over there.
Sony could have very easily made the form factor work with the Slim plates. This was a deliberate choice and smells like more nickel-and-diming by Sony.
Pay extra for disc drive, pay extra for vertical stand, pay extra for new plates...
I pre-ordered the Pro, but they won't be seeing any money from me for these things. I'll stick with the white plates, thanks very much.
Terrible decision from Sony and something they could have easily fixed. I'm sure that the original post says the top plates are exactly the same size and that it's just the clips that are in different places.
Edit: The original post confirms that the plates are exactly the same size in every way. It's just the placement of the clips that are different.
This means that Sony deliberately decided to make them incompatible. Thanks once again Sony!!!
Probably so they can charge more for the Pro plates compared to the slim. If you can afford the console you can afford an extra tenner on the plates think Sony.
@get2sammyb The article is wrong. The plates are exactly the same size.
@nicc83 The Pro is longer. The plates are exactly the same size. As confirmed in the original post.
Oh my god its the end of civilisation as we know it.
Releasing a third set of covers specifically for the PS5 Pro seems a little ludicrous to us.
Honestly I wasn't expecting either part of the cover to fit.... seems they slipped on that one.
I am a bit disappointed the standard plates don't work with the Pro, because it did seem that they could despite the Pro's larger size, but I never would have expected the SLIM plates to fit. That is just a strange expectation.
Wait! I don't understand. I thought that I'd be able to use the disc drive with its plate of my ps5 slim in a new ps5 pro. or are only the upper plates different?
@LuDaurre Correct. The article states the bottom covers do fit, so you're good.
Done on purpose
Any 3rd parties picking up the slack here? I was able to get black plates for my PS5 almost immediately after launch.
@Jalex_64 Ahhh Thx. I hadn't understood that part.
"while they're physically the same size. The teeth that connect to the system are and slightly different places"
Actually makes 0 sense to do this, I doubt Sony sells enough plates to justify having a 3rd line for a console that's going to sell in smaller numbers to the Slim.
The bottom plates fit but the top plates don't and I'm sure I already knew this. I remember reading about it on Reddit a few weeks back.
I knew I should have put the white plates back on my slim a couple of months ago. This is going to draw attention. I told the missus we couldn't afford a holiday.
Genuinely thought this was common knowledge tbh.
Just another little Sony thing and another year.
One tiny reason to add to the list why the PS5 is down now 5.61 million units sold against the PS4 same time line in Europe and growing each month.
Mid generation and they really need to try and reverse this situation.
Then again it has been one of the worst generations and strangest generations at Sony and Microsoft.
Let’s hope the next 3 to 4 years pick up a bit.
Hello. My name is Captain Obvious. I am writing this article today as a guide to things you should've already assumed.
It's math and measurements people it doesn't add up lmao of course they won't fit
@get2sammyb the post itself says the plates are the same size, just they deliberately put the connecting teeth in different places so they can't fit.
Was pretty excited about plates when the PS5 first arrived and now I couldn't be more over them. Nice work Sony!
Also what's with the know-it-alls coming out of the woodworks on this? Awesome, you knew all along. I mean nevermind they are actually the same size but whatever we're all idiots thinking Sony might throw us a bone here by just lining up clips.
Just wait and see the pro face plates. They look really professional.
To be fair it does look like the plates are very similar in size, with the wider mid section making up the additional size requirements, but I just dont see how this is Sony trying to pull a fast one.
A mistake maybe, or maybe its needed for some reason - but not intentional to get money out of customers.. they would need extra moulds and additional production runs going forwards etc.
@EfYI 🤣 alright Hermen, enough of the sales pitch...
@carlos82 You're absolutely right, I misread that. Updated to clarify that and include a statement from Sony shared with IGN.
@Drago201 The plates are exactly the same size. Sony has deliberately decided to make them incompatible by putting the clips in different places.
@StopBeingTribal The plates are exactly the same size. Sony has deliberately decided to make them incompatible by putting the clips in different places.

I’ve no desire to change the plates on my console (I bought it for playing games) but could someone please clarify if the SSD slot on the Pro is on the top or bottom section? I ask because I’m a bit heavy handed and if it’s the bottom then at least I should be able to get a replacement plate easily enough since they match the Slim but if it’s the top then I’ll have to be very careful as I’ve little doubt Sony will be charging extra for the Pro plates with their deliberately different clip locations
Do we have actual confirmation the disk drive is compatible as well? The store only mentions ps5 slim compatibility. Never can trust sony
@mountain_spider I wasn’t talking negatively saying he didn’t help, I was just saying I believed this to already be confirmed and common knowledge.
@Runex2121 *This product is only for PS5® Pro consoles and PS5 Digital Edition consoles (CFI-2000 model group - slim). Drive will play 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray™ discs, Blu-ray discs, and DVDs. Internet connection required to pair Disc Drive and PS5 console upon setup.
Taken from PlayStation direct 👍
@mountain_spider “it wasn't exactly common knowledge and so he wasn't saying anything which didn't help.”
Sorry, I read this opening that way. Can easily be read negatively.
Maybe Sony could offer an exchange program? Nah…forgot this is Sony.
@AgentGuapo We are all SO happy for you that you’re getting the 30th Anniversary Pro 🙄🤪
@__jamiie OK that's some tomfoolery than
I, myself, am waiting for PS5 Pro(TM) color plates in the Concord Grape color way. I hear all proceeds will benefit The Hulst Foundation.
@__jamiie
"The plates are exactly the same size. Sony has deliberately decided to make them incompatible by putting the clips in different places."
FFS, that is shabby behaviour.
@__jamiie Here's what I'm going to do:
1. Buy a PS5 Pro.
2. Buy a new faceplate if I need it.
3. Not cry over something so trivial.
Some folks are so fragile.
You can use anything to try to justify this. But alongside the newest plates also won't be available for the OG version (I can understand that, since the model is discontinued), PRO $700 without disc OR stand (this is ridiculous), the new main version also isn't compatible with the pro? This is such a cash grab move. You could def have made them all compatible. To have to own different set of plates for each system is absurd. The slim doesn't come with a stand, ps plus price going up all the time...
I have a weird feeling sony's endgame is having all of us on PC. I'll probably get a PS6 sometime down the line, but I'll most probably make the shift to PC next gen.
Another reason to stay with my Slim
@StopBeingTribal You don't have to defend everything Sony do. 😂
There isn't a defense for what they've done and have actually made life more difficult for themselves by having extra SKUs to design, manufacture and ship.
It's either incredibly sneaky or absolutely incompetent.
For the record, I think the cover plate concept was an ingenious idea from the off as lots of people like to be able to customise their systems in some way. This move just makes no sense.
The new plates are $225 apiece lol
Err. Power to the payers? Love me some Playstation but damn
Removed - trolling/baiting
Honestly, it's the disc drive that I was concerned about.
Why on earth did they design it the way they did with the side fins if it doesn't make the plates fit? Surely they could've just made it look like the slim but bigger. Very odd design choice
Can we get a slimmer slim?
@__jamiie Have you tried the 2019 Schrader Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon? I believe it won a lot of awards. I think it'll pair nicely with some gaming tonight. The whine in here isn't as good.
Despite being the same size, the teeth that connect the cover to the console are said to be located in slightly different positions.
Obviously it was too much for Sony to do a nice gesture.
@NEStalgia You’re smart. If Sony continues to keep making hardware at its current pace, PS VR2, Portal, Pro, new controllers, new faceplates, and they stop making new games, what party does that make them? I’m saying 4th b/c it doesn’t make any sense, but neither does putting out an endless stream of hardware while you keep sending your devs packing.
Sony, we’re too busy making new hardware to make new games, please buy our old ones remastered and on PC. #4thPartyFTW
@rjejr Yeah they don't get a party, they just become a component manufacturer. They are in the party-free zone.
Had a thought - maybe they are a different curvature - thats not visible in these pictures. Different curvature to allow more air flow, therefore different clips to prevent slim ones being used which could damage the pro due to thermals.
Maybe they originally thought to use slim plates, hence the very similar size, then realised aftet testing they needed more air flow.
@JokerBoy322 nope. That would be Nintendo or Apple. Just read the comments here, just like everywhere else. It's 99% negative.
I suspected as much because this is the kind of consumer friendly noises Sony make these days.
I'm still waiting to see a retail box for a disc drive that says "PS5 Pro compatible" as it wouldn't surprise me to find out that they've been 'revised' and early versions are incompatible for reasons unknown.
@StopBeingTribal
Guys, just stop and learn from the wine-drinking pidgin, will you? Even the name tells us this is, in fact, sage advise and I for one like it's gumption and can-do attitude!
Just open a good bottle of wine when ordering to lessen the blow of paying HUNDREDS of dollars for insignificant details about your little collection of printplates and cooling.
In summary, thank you for coming to my TED talk, where we discussed how face plates is a scam no true Scotsman would ever buy.
@StopBeingTribal What a very funny comment.
They charge for the PS5 Pro stand. Of course they are going to recover some Concord losses with face plates.
@naruball could it be? Are consumers FINALLY waking up?
@armondo36 somewhere a Sony marketer is reading your comment and tearing up at the thought of brand loyalty as strong as yours lol.
Got to claw back that $400 million and more some how huh
@NEStalgia “ component manufacturer “
On come on now, I can’t type Nintendo correctly, you can’t honestly expect me to type that monstrosity in every article about Sony hardware and Wolverine getting declawed.
@JokerBoy322 it's been the case for quite a while now. At least on push square anyway.
This really is not an issue.
They have plates specifically for PS5.
They have plates specifically for PS5 Slim.
At some point they will make plates specifically for PS5 Pro.
Those complaining about PS5 Slim plates not fitting a completely new and different model which hasn't yet even released clearly have too much privilege swirling around in their lives.
It's a non-issue
I cannot believe people are just finding out about this now when they even put out a chart and mentioned this well in advan--
I take it back... This makes total sense. Everyone has been having knee-jerk reactions to it. No research what-so-ever. I even heard there were some articles reporting that they WERE supported without even looking into the stuff out there and had to backpedal. Like even some people that didn't know about the chart or the blog just called customer service and got an instant answer!
We must do better than this. It's already weird that this would even be a huge issue when people complained about the Pro even existing. Do people want it or not... because buying plates ahead of time for it sure sounds like interest to me.
A baffling design decision, really. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt they there may be some legitimate technical reason for the mounting points being located differently on the two SKUs, but it seems like something they could have accounted for, especially as they would have been designing both consoles at the same time.
The covers can occasionally be hard enough to track down as it is - I had to wait the better part of a year for the black original ones to come back in stock - so making Pro-only ones isn't going to help.
@_Nightsever_ The blog post at the time wasn't explicitly clear, and the chart you're presumably referring to appears to be something Amazon Japan cooked up themselves. Sony could have simply clarified in the first instance instead of dancing around the fact.
There was plenty of reason to assume they would fit, especially with the announcement of the new Chroma range not mentioning anything about being incompatible with the Pro.
I'm all for criticising those who don't read what's in front of them or do the most basic research, but it's apparent there was a lot of confusion and incorrect information going around up to this point. Making both consoles use the same covers would've been the common sense approach, but that appears to be in short supply these days.
@Artois2 Yep, the updated it so im thrilled. When i posted i checked and at that time it just said slim.
I dont buy physical, and already have the series x for movies, but the option to get one later is always appreciated.
@naruball that's because they got bought out by IGN earlier in the year. IGN and it's parent companies now own a huge amount of mainstream game sites. Not many left that they don't own now. So basically all these sites just regurgitate whatever IGN says. I think videogameschronicle.com is still safe though!
@MrHabushi So tell me... how does the platform selling the PS5 pros online have less credibility than everyone else? How do you magically ignore something that detailed from someone you're shelling out $700+ bucks too? Why are news sites going off distant size comparisons from pictures instead of taking something like that seriously? If a bunch of regular people could get confirmation by calling customer service over a month ago-- on top of noticing all these other details, why on earth didn't all of these sites do it? Heck, they even found out that it has a slightly different shape and venting system and exactly what plates work where.
Do you see any PS5 Pros in that minute ad showing off the Chroma Range? Didn't think so.
No, I'm through with giving people the benefit of the doubt this year, if not this gen. Happened with Helldivers 2 but NO ONE ever admits that the PSN requirement info was there both on the Steam page where you buy it and in-game to even play. That was entirely on the players and the devs for letting them in for so long-- because if they couldn't play, they could just refund it, ultimately preventing people from being too deep into the game and worrying about whatever PSN rules there were.
My point is that Sony has been clear and everyone is blinded by whatever goes viral in each story. Helldivers 2 got popular so no-one cared as long as they got in. PS5 Pro is $700 and doesn't include the disc-drive... and that's about all people cared to know, if not repeat ad nauseam. Suddenly, people out themselves on preparing for this thing and not even correctly.
@_Nightsever_ I didn't say Amazon Japan wasn't credible, rather I was suggesting that a chart on a Japanese retailer website isn't much use to those of us in the rest of the world. The confusion was partly a result of people somewhat understandably assuming that covers would fit both SKUs given the apparent design similarities, but ultimately it was caused by Sony not simply stating plainly in the Pro announcement and press releases that current covers would not be compatible, instead of employing the usual PR speak that dances around the point. The stand fits, the optical drive fits, it was reasonable to think the covers would too.
Anyway, at least it's all finally been clarified now.
@JokerBoy322 lol!!
@SlipperyFish $$$$$$$$$$$$$
@armondo36 what's that got to do with the design? If the plates didn't fit they didn't have to use the side fins, could've just made it bigger. If anything they were probably intended on making them fit but a last minute design choice forced them to. If anything this will cost them money due to all the extra money they now need to spend on extra manufacturing, tooling, and shipping space
@MrHabushi That is entirely the point of social media and news sites like this. We learn a LOT about details early from different parts of the world-- but that chart was a visual guide that's extremely easy to understand... so why not report on it? This also doesn't explain why these sites didn't simply ask Sony as well. Like think about where we are right now! Forget getting info from out of the country, some regular people just called and got this clarification.
How very nice that people paid attention that those fit but conveniently didn't question the rest. Even with the different midsection on the console that everyone could see-- along with likelihood that something was going to be different since the thing is more powerful. For the record, you can't use PS4 slim cover on a PS4 Pro. For very similar reasons too! Imagine that. No outrage then too.
It was clarified over a month ago. People just choose not to report on it because it doesn't bring in traffic. It has been essentially nothing but blu-ray drives and $700 before now, aside from the anniversary version announcement... and now they're apparently making a big deal over a "no disc-drive included" icon on the PS5 Pro's box even though that's been on every digital only PS5 box. Whatever.... They probably should have made that take up half the box after how much they have to spell out things for everyone this year. I digress... I'm out.
@EfYI Apologies. I didn't mean to hurt your feelings. Be well my friend. We will all get through this malaise together.
