You don't see this every day: the DualSense controller, PS5's official pad, has been successfully used to carry out remote surgery.
The news comes via a report from Fox News, who say Swiss surgeons have performed long distance endoscopy using the controller. Operating on a pig in Hong Kong nearly 6,000 miles away, the system involves robotic apparatus, a magnetic endoscope, and the DualSense to control the device remotely. A PS3 Move controller has also been used in these experiments.
The surgeon in Switzerland would receive a live video feed and, with latency of less than 300 milliseconds, is able to accurately carry out the procedure. While that might sound like a significant input delay, it's actually comparable to other surgical systems.
This experiment's success could pave the way for long distance surgery on humans, with qualified surgeons able to provide medical help to more remote locations where it's not so readily available. One extreme example is being able to operate on astronauts in space.
While there are some hurdles to overcome, it seems like this form of surgery could become quite common in future. It's super impressive, and could save many lives.

Is this the new game Insomniac is working on?
Yep, and then the dreaded stick drift comes into play…
Surgeon : “well there is good news and bad news..”
Do you need to have the platinum in Surgeon Simulator to qualify?
Because that's a pretty hard platinum...
Imagine lagging in real life procedure. Lol
I'd rather use it do dive down to the Titanic in a metal toilet roll.
I have two controllers and both have stick drift. I can't play FC25 as I should and the surgeon uses it to control medical equipment? Well...nice!
See the haptic feedback is finally getting some use
@HotGoomba
If that were the case, this procedure wouldn't have been so successful, judging by Insomniac's lack of physics in their games
And if it were Ubisoft, the patient would've been let go in the middle of the procedure and told to come back after a few months to patch up a lil bit (not fully. Just a lil bit)
reminds me to Will Smith driving the car with the PS1 controller in Men In Black 2
This is news?
Pretty sure if I did some detective work, I'd find 1 from years ago where they used a ps4 controller.
They just upgraded.
Wow that reminds of another feel good story in which a submarine visiting the Titanic was controlled with a Logitech controller!
Incredible use of technology, if true! You can't believe anything Fox News says.
Cool. Just never use a switch pad!
Wish the surgeon could check the pulses at Sony HQ, they've lost their heart.
Do you think the haptic feedback on the dualsense is used to?
And there's me complaining about anything over 30ms ping in CsGo hahaha
Let's start a pool--when will stick drift take its first victim?
The DualSense stick are just as drifty.
So you’re telling me I have a chance to become a surgeon if I bring my DualSense to the hospital? I’m ready to save all the people
I’ve had two dualsense controllers with stick drift in 4 years. Zero issues during PS3/PS4 eras. I hope he had a backup controller around just in case!
This is so cool!
@nessisonett ah damn had a feeling someone was gonna mention that. What a feel-good story 😂.
@themightyant To shreds you say?
Just don't visit the Titanic pls
Finally all that Trauma Center is going to pay off, Doctor tier salary here I come.
@cuttlefishjones what heptics? This just saying a controller being used... They most likely have everything else turned off or not even using it
@Flobbots no....
@Ribbitsneed "reminds me to Will Smith driving the car with the PS1 controller in Men In Black 2"
I think his wife secretly used a PS5 controller + haptic feedback + extra rumble on Chris Rock (mind control could be another possibility) 😜
Oh no problems with drifting sticks here then nooo lmao
